When i was growing up in the 90's & the 2000's, I legit thought the future of gaming was going to be utterly amazing. It's not about graphics. It's increased gameplay mechanics, physics effects, damage effects, environment interaction options, engaging AI to play against in single player against CPU bots in offline modes, or good AI in the games campaign. It's just crazy how many current video games focus on graphical nitpicking and don't put any effort into any of the other things that make games that even have quirky graphics but make it so awesome due to creative art style, gameplay style, gameplay modes, the list goes on.. idk what happened?

Dude I remember thinking games like Black, Far Cry, Chaos legon we're so realistic looking. Hell I thought golden eye was damn near real life lmao.

Those other things you mentioned can really make developments longer since it's more complex, and very few devs are willing to do that. Since most of them has a deadline to follow, they only do what is the fastest for them

@@goldensperm7182I hear you but if we approach game development with that mindset, then what would be the point of putting in the effort into making any kind of video game then? I think there can be a way to find a balanced approach towards game development. Such as maybe deciding that it wouldn't be important to commit a ton of work hours and resources towards Ray tracing, reflections, choosing to not going with an open world game design, maybe going with 1440p for better performance rather than pushing for 4k no matter what, finding a satisfying graphics design/art style rather than stressing the devs in making everything hyper realistic (yet they commonly fail to achieve a visually appealing look) if they made these development choices then it seems way more achievable for them to sprinkle in satisfying gameplay mechanics such as reactive environments, physics like effects, damage effects, etc, etc. (Just to remind you, Developers successfully achieved these kinds of things during the Xbox 360 and PS3 era.. So it is possible)

It's not the graphics that need to get better, it's the love and attention to detail that needs to get better. Most of the games i consider to be the best looking are typically years old by now, if not over a decade old. The artstyle in games is always what i love the most. A game can have graphics that don't strive for realism per say, but have just enough flair and originality that it makes up for it. Realism in game graphics is nice and pretty, but the graphics being just "slightly" off will make me think it looks better. Having a little bit of dirt, grime or even imperfection will add more life and beauty into it. Games have high quality texture resolutions, but not high quality textures.

I realized this late in production and it's not a huge deal, but I do regret referring to Pixar's recent stylistic shift as "simpler". There's a stigma around the type of animation they employ, especially in regards to the facial expressions of characters, and I think the language I used could be correlated with the narrative that their work is "easier" or "lazier" which of course isn't the case! Pretty much every new movie looks better then the last simply because the technology and the craft has gotten better, or at least more detailed.
The longer you spend on any one project the more critical you're going to be of it, and it's difficult not to anticipate responses to your work so I could have made this comment about a number of things, but I did want to make this point clear. Thank you, I hope you all like the video!

A triple-A video game on the highest settings can fool like into thinking you're looking at Hollywood level CGI. I'd say yes, graphics have absolutely peaked. Unfortunately, seems like 2/3rds of video game budgets now go into a) graphics and b) building out these exhaustive gigantic open worlds, and only 1/3rd of the budget goes into gameplay and writing. Unfortunately, there's not a whoel lot more upside left in graphics, and open world games are starting to feel too long, too big, too empty, etc.

It's not just graphics that put you in to the game world, it's also the physics, attention to details and interaction with world or environment that hooks you up. That's why games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Last of Us Part 2 are still seen as benchmark. Only higher quality textures and higher polygon count won't take realism further.

Graphics has definitely peaked since ps4/xbone one era..ps5/series x it's all about resolution and frame rate performance..no difference in quality detail on current gen

I really miss PS2 and X360 era graphics. This hyper realism makes all the colors washed out and objects hard to distinguish due to the contrasty lighting.
Also gameplay and story wise, shorter and more focused games!

i remember when MGS2 came out, i thought HOLY CRAP THERE'S NO WAY GRAPHICS CAN GET BETTER THAN THIS.
The particle effects on PS2 do stand the test of time though. they still look good now which is pretty crazy for a console from 2000.

Focusing on graphics is a super convenient way for studios/developers to AVOID the most difficult aspects of creating a great game - innovative gameplay, engaging story, etc. (and in fairness, advanced graphics *was* a potential selling point during the PS3/4 era)
But nowadays it's clear that high-fidelity graphics do NOT automatically make a fun or interesting game.. and that art direction > realism

Games will keep improving graphically, the Unity 6 tech demo came out running on a RTX 4090 and it is still not photorealistic, we will most likely see this level of graphics in games by 2030 and graphics won’t look photorealistic until 2040-2045

I see "ray-tracing" as a negative. It's basically just procedurally generated lighting based on a set of mathematical rules. It will never look as beautiful as an artist hand-painting and fine tuning the lighting in a game. I find most post 2020 games washed out, hazy gray messes (examples: Sonic Frontiers, Starfield, FF16). I know these games don't fully use real-time ray tracing...but ray tracing was used in their lighting design and then baked into these games.

I'm going to have to disagree with your sentiment. Graphics still have a long way to go and many games that are considered to have cutting edge graphics are held back by hardware. When the hardware gets better so will the graphics. This has been the case all along and will continue to be the case. Maybe when we see the release of the fictional RTX 6090 will this begin to not hold true.

Of course they do have a way to go still. But the point is that the graphics are getting so good that any improvement will be barely noticeable to most people while the cost for it isn't going down.

the differences become more subtle with each new graphics card or console generation. difference between ps4 and ps5 isnt all that apparent in a still screenshot but in motion, you can see an undeniable difference.
