Anne-Marie and Xavier HUBERT-BRIERRE along with Michel GUISS DJOMOU have installed six large glass mirrors in the Gabonese forest at six different locations along a path from Oyan to Nyonié, in the area between Pongara National Park and the Presidential Wonga Wongué Reserve in the west part of Gabon. In this uncontrolled and natural environment, multiple cameras have been placed in front of each mirror in order to film the reactions of animals in front of their reflection from different angles and at different distances. The chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), often take this path and have met with these mirrors. Their long and repeated actions in front of these mirrors, have been filmed by camera traps.
In front of a mirror, each chimpanzee effectively recognizes his neighbours among the reflections, he also notices the presence of a stranger he has never met: his image he does not know. Why is he here? Why would I share with this unknown silverback the right to mate with the females in our group? In an attempt to frighten this stranger he has never met (his image), this chimpanzee shows his large build, in standing in a bipedal position, stretching out his arms, ruffling his hair and shows his strength with heavy, loudly slaps with cupped hands on the ground. These slaps on the ground must be very noisy because this alpha chimpanzee want to show his power and thus scare the invader of his domain (his own image) and push him to escape. His reflection taking the same attitude, he hesitates to fight it.
The videos of the chimpanzees demonstrate that little by little, certain among them show the capacity to recognize themselves. This is the case primarily among the females, who contrary to the adult males, do not interpret their reflection as an enemy. An individual chimpanzees' repeated examination of body parts in the mirror, which cannot be seen without a mirror, such as the teeth and back, will confirm that the chimpanzee in question has indeed recognized itself.

I don't agree. My boy when he was less than six months old, we played with him in front of a mirror. I sneaked up from behind his mother holding him. He saw me through the mirror and immediately turned toward me and laughed. We never taught him what is a mirror.
@@benthekeeshond545 This is proof that your 6-month-old son has either understood the reflective properties of the mirror or, hearing your voice behind his mother, has turned to your voice. This is absolutely no proof that he understood that the reflection in the mirror was himself.
I think I will start acting this way when I see a mirror in public.

It's hard to know what chimps are really angry and which ones are looking to see themselves angry in the mirror.
Some might just be studying how threatening they are to adversaries.
Humans watch themselves in the mirror to study if they look good, if they look threatening, it they look sad. We know we must use different faces and postures in different situations.
*In animals as in Apes (Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Bonobos and Orangutans) as in humans, self recognition in a mirror is not innate. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way.*
*In humans over 2 years of age, after learning in the mirror with their parents, they recognize themselves in their reflection*
For example in chimpanzees:
*Children and chimpanzee females are not worried about their reflection, which they do not consider as a danger but rather as a potential playmate or lover or finally as a new female who has joined the group.*
*During the first exposures, each alpha chimpanzee (silverback) effectively recognizes its neighbours among the reflections, it also notices the presence of a stranger it has never met: its image it does not know. What is he doing there? Why is he here? Why would I share with this unknown silverback the right to mate with the females in our group? In an attempt to frighten this stranger he has never met (his image), with whom he does not want to share the females of his group, this chimpanzee shows his large build, standing in a bipedal position, arms outstretched, ruffling his hair, and shows his strength with heavy loudly slaps with cupped hands on the ground. These slaps on the ground must be very noisy because this alpha chimpanzee want to show his power and thus scare the invader of his domain (his own image) and push him to escape. His reflection taking the same attitude, he hesitates to fight it.*
Under these conditions, learning to use the mirror is not possible and cannot be successful for silverback chimpanzees. After a long practice in mirror in laboratory, some chimpanzees have performed unambiguouslyon the mirror test, but not always.

"That fucker knows all my moves"
Male Chimps: See their reflection and want to fight.
Female Chimps: How's my butt look?
*_Case of a female chimpanzee:_* In front of a mirror, she sees a female she has never seen before, a stranger? (her reflection): A new female that the dominant males of the group will share. Such are the male/female relationships in chimpanzees. So she doesn't know jealousy and she can quietly stay in front of her reflection and do her apprenticeship in the mirror which will allow her to recognize herself in her reflection.
*_Case of babies:_* In front of a mirror they are happy to discover a new playmate who takes pleasure in copying exactly every one of his own moves.
*_Case of a silverback chimpanzee:_* In front of a mirror, each alpha chimpanzee (silverback) effectively recognizes its neighbor among the reflections, it also notices the presence of a stranger it has never met: its image it does not know. What is he doing there? Why is he here? Why would I share with this unknown silverback the right to mate with the females in our group? In an attempt to frighten this stranger he has never met (his image), with whom he does not want to share the females of his group, this chimpanzee shows his great corpulence, standing in a bipedal position, arms outstretched, hair up, and *_ shows his strength with heavy slaps on the ground._* Hearing the cries of the other chimpanzees of the group (pan hut), perched in the trees around the mirror, he cannot remain calm and must assume his status of dominant male and scare away this intruder. Under these conditions, learning to use the mirror is not possible and cannot be successful. The scarier they act, the scarier the reflection gets lol
hahahahaha
Humans still don't understand this.
In apes as in humans, self-recognition in a mirror is not innate. It is the result of the more comfortable mirror training at home in young humans with their parents who have done this training before and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. In chimpanzees or gorillas, in the insecurity of the jungle learning to mirror at the same time as their parents who have not done this training and who do not speak, it is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals.
In females towards their reflection, which they do not know, are not aggressive because they are accustomed to share a male (silverback in gorillas) or several males (silverback or dominant males or alpha males in chimpanzees) and therefore they do not know jealousy and are therefore not angry to discover the arrival of a foreign female (their own reflection) that they do not consider as a rival.
Children and teenagers are happy to see a new playmate and so they are more inquisitive exactly like in humans
So in females and youngs it is easier to learn miror. On the other hand, the attitude of the males towards their reflections is aggressive: each chimpanzee does indeed recognize its neighbors among the reflections, it also notices the presence of a stranger that it has never met and who probably comes to share their females. Each of them, wanting to prove its dominant status, will try to drive away this intruder: its image that it does not know. Why is he here? To try to frighten this stranger he has never met (his image), he shows his great build, standing in a bipedal position, stretching out his arms, ruffling his hair and showing his strength with heavy slaps on the ground. His reflection taking the same attitude, he hesitates to fight it.
For the silverback gorilla, he avoids looking at his reflection so as not to defy it, but in the bipedal position with heavy slaps on the ground, he tries to scare this invader out of his domain.

scary stuff....the scream of one of the upset ones was higher pitched than expected [also considered if he was larger or similarly sized compared to the "celebrity chimp" mauling/attempted murder {horrendous, I don't recommend listening to it}- another youtuber asked "who would win in grizzly vs gorilla" - my guess would be a silverback gorilla. I didn't watch it because I don't like animals attacking animals, etc. Your description of serious raw power says it all.
@@ginaharden2111 i'v watched the video, no animals where harmed in it (they didn't actually have the animals fight), to give the answer, Grizzly wins, similar bite strength (Gorrila's is slightly higher but it won't really matter, a layer of thick loose skin protects the bear from bites and claws ) Actually physically stronger than the Gorrila, actually knows to use the strength to it's fullest since it's an actual predator (Gorrila's insticts are very basic when it comes to fighting since...well it would rather not) has claws on top of that, and considering majority of time, the only thing you will get from shooting a Grizzly is at most a very angry bear (not even a wounded one)...yeah Gorrila is not taking this one sadly
@@demonslayer6267 cool - TYVM, and thanks for the breakdown of what the expected results would be in such a scenario. I didn't think they would have them actually fight each other mainly because they don't live on the same continent and any fight with the two would be staged/prompted. Then they'd have animal rights ppl on their trail. [I'd sign the Petition too lol]. But the thought of it is scary. I thought the grizzly would have an advantage with its claws, fatty body, but, I thought the gorilla would be more agile with its arms etc and their muscles are huge and solid, brute strength with similarly structured teeth. Grizzlies' teeth and nature are flesh and limb damaging, yet, the gorillas diet consists of softer foods and, as you stated, it's not their nature to make a meal of the grizzly.....more only fighting for dominance. And with grizzlies being taller that's another plus for them. I would guess the grizzly is a faster runner....at least distance running. The query reminds me of Kong vs Godzilla [had to consider Godzilla's ability to attack with fire] and, no, I haven't seen that movie either. I hope u have a gr8 weekend :D
