Hello! I'm wondering why I've seen some people put a coffee filter over the jar for fermentation, while many fermenet the water kefir the way you're doing here in the video - with a closed seal on the jar. Thanks for your advice!
I just got my grains in the post, I followed the instructions on the paper which said 2 spoons of sugar to 1L of water with some rasins and two thin slices of lemon. I’m slightly worried that it won’t activate because its not sugary enough since its diluted. What would you advise I do! I wish I watched this video first.
I don't know what I do wrong 😞 I brought your 20gm bag of grain and follow your instructions, I have a Brita filter, I use white sugar, clean jar , clean equipment and nothing 😞 All I can think off is the temperature who could be a problem as my house average 19°c (therefore colder at night)🤷♂️
Great video. I just received my grains and I wonder if I can use blueberry puree instead of sugar. I do not tolerate sugar or sugar substitutes due to dysbiosis. I'm hoping to improve my condition using water kefir. Thank you!
Hey Annita! I would stick with sugar for the first fermentation, as this could harm the grains and not make them very reusable. However, if you wanted to use fruit puree to flavour your drink, that would work just fine!
Hi, just got the grains today. What make or brand of sugar do you recommend or suggest to get the best results. Before, I've used organic coconut palm sugar mixed together with a good quality demerara sugar. Are these any good? Thanks
Anything Golden Granulated is your best bet, we always use organic cane sugar to feed our Scobys and Kefir, you can buy some from us at freshlyfermented.co.uk/product/organic-certified-cane-sugar/ Although you can also find it in the supermarkets as well if you need it ASAP.
I don't know if anyone can answer this: Can you feed water Kerfir on the Original Energy drink Lucozade? Lucozade is full of sugar and it is a carbonated clear fizzy drink. I was recently given a box of Lucozade and I don't want to drink it because each bottle contains 17 grams of sugar.
I'm not 100% sure, it depends on how many preservatives (if any) are in the drinks :/ I'm going to say probably not, as the whole purpose of a preservative is to kill bacteria. I know you can do it with juice, but the kefir grains won't last as long as they should do.
@@freshlyfermented9273 I've just started brewing up some Kombucha, I'm just trying to figure out the best place to keep it in my house? I could not get hold of any kefir grains, so for now I'm going to try and experiment with Kombucha.
How come your water kefir is clear? I've watched a few other videos and they are all brownish Also a lot of ppl I've seen put fresh fruit in their 2nd ferment and ferment it for like 2-3 days, same as the initial fermentation, one guy even said that he leaves a few grains in his second ferment to make it done within 16 hours instead of 2-3 days. Is there any truth to these?
So a-lot of people in the USA purchase and sell dehydrated grains, which does cause more of a discolouration to the water, so this could be the cause of the brown colouration. Fruit in the kefir is absolutely normal, and a good way of doing it, the fruit also could speed up carbonation due to the fruits sugar levels. However in regards to the grains in the bottle while carbonating, I'm not sure about that one? Grains will cause a gas build up, so in theory yes that should work, however if any flavourings like syrups or juices have been added to the bottle as-well as the grains. Those grains will more than likely die of fairly quickly afterwards.
@@The-eo4lj Also some people's water may be brown due to the sugar they used. Raw / demerara is naturally brown and colors the water! :) If you use white (refined) sugar it probably remains more clear.
I live in UK and I use filtered water that has stood overnight - apparently this releases the chlorine. My kefir is fine - though have to admit I make the sugar water before I put the kefir in. Good luck!
perfect this is how ive always done it. just looking this over again as its been a few years since ive done water kefir.

Just received my grains today - Im so excited! Thanks for posting this video, as for some reason your website wont load for me. Cant wait for results!
Hi Felicia, we love your name :), does it come up with an error code at all?
@@freshlyfermented9273
Thanks! Yes it was an error code.
When carbonating in the bottle, do you have to "burp" the bottle or will it be ok with the lid on?

Nothing anti bacterial like soft drink preservatives, concentrated just add water drink, tumeric or honey.

others are brownish because they added a bit of unsulphured molasses to theirs for minerals to feed the grains
You said non-chlorinated water...I live in sweden and that's all I can get, what's the consequences?

Interesting that you say the second ferment should be 5-10 days. I'm seeing 1-3 days. Oh well.
