A fantastic vignette on the psychology of belief and judgement formation. It has everything: gaslighting, gossip, uneconomical hypothesis formation, appeal to authority, appeal to vanity, indubitable sensory evidence, appeal to the zeitgeist, introspective fallibility, probabilistic inference, and more I am sure. Amusing writing for the times. Great performance!
Bewitched prefigures some of the great conversations of our own times in this way. In many ways it is a show about the disclosure of supernatural phenomena (UFOs and advanced intelligences) which was both a big topic at the time and has now become even more "phenomenal." Woven into the narrative are so many themes such as feminism, fear of "other", homosexuality and difference which all play upon and are part of the archaic revival threads of topics which were certainly quite taboo at the time of the production of the show and even now remain very much part of an alternative new age sub-culture. Like all great and influential art forms, it was both within the zeitgeist of its time and also way ahead of its time.
