In defence of Paul and the "decline" in his voice over the last few years . . . you have to remember this is a guy that kept his full-on, strong-as-f***, singing voice until he was at least like 67, which is decades more than most singers do. THEN you have to remember that he now plays longer sets than ever; usually 3 hours at a time, which musicians in their 20s or 30s usually won't even dream of. THEN you have to remember that instead of 'taking care' of his voice and just trotting out for a 45 minute set, he's singing all afternoon and evening before the 3 hour gig - doing 45-minute-long SOUNDCHECKS like this and doing loads of dressing room warm-up too. THEN remember that he's singing all the songs at their original pitch, in their original key, and has been doing that for the last 50 years. Many bands or artists will change the key of the songs from their CURRENT album, at like age 25, so that it's more manageable to sing live. - So we could sit here and comment on the 'weakening' of his voice all we want, but the fact that he's even able to speak, let alone sing a note at this point, is nothing short of miraculous.
+Michael Palmer - of course! Absolutely agreed, Michael. For those who are complaining that he doesn't sing like he used to; who else at the age of 73 can sing the same way that they did when they were 20, 30, hell, even 50? Not to mention how often he is doing it - it's not hard to burn-out your voice if you're giving it your all, night after night, travelling, not getting enough rest, continually doing talk shows and interviews in between shows, playing different climates all the time - Miami one night and Fargo the next? Anyone at ANY age could suffer from vocal fatigue under those conditions. I saw Boston about 14 years ago, and Brad Delp couldn't hit the high notes anymore, they had a younger back-up singer who was there to hit those stratospheric vocal parts, because Delp couldn't do it anymore, and he was MUCH younger then than Macca is now. Phil Collins used to roast his voice almost every other night on tour, and only in his 30's/40's, as a result of singing "I Don't Care Anymore", to the point where he finally had to just drop it from the set. Let's give Sir Paul a little credit here, gang. He's doing an amazing job; and he STILL sings better than a lot of guys who are HALF his age.
all true. My deceased Mum was a university Speech Pathology Asst. Head of Department, so I know about the 'voice.' Paul's croaky speaking voice is indicative of someone who has over-used his voice - with glorious results one might add. Not just singing, speaking (he's talkative innit he) yelling, the whole 9. Rather than 'conserve' it (and there's no good evidence that taking time off preserves the voice, indeed many singers believe time off is THE worst mistake) he decided or fate decided for him - to use it, to really pull out all the stops. It's called "lack of fear of life!"
I agree entirely, Michael. People have got to remember, Paul didn't tour for 9 years. He went back on the road in '02 (a staggering show), and has essentially been on on tour a couple of times a year ever since. That kind of effort for 13 years (plus his age) is going to take it's toll. But even a 70-80% voice coming out of Paul's head... is STILL worth the money.
This is a long soundcheck, Paul is such a pro. And for those ignorant enough to criticize the singing, it's a SOUNDCHECK. He has to sing a full show that evening and there is no way he is going to push his voice.
These videos of Macca performing live do not do his live show justice. Yes, his voice has declined since I first saw him live in 2002. But in the six subsequent times I've seen him, his voice only gets better. The shows only get better. The atmosphere, the love, the people, the soundtrack to our lives...that's what his shows are about. I saw him this past July, at 75, he's still the undisputed king of live shows. If you've only witnessed Paul "live" through these videos and not actually in concert, you have to do so at least once in your life. He is the greatest of all time. And this is coming from a 27-year-old.
He puts on a phenominal show. Way over two hours every time...all awesome tunes...it's always a pleasure to see his performance...looking forward to May 4th n 5th
I love this video! I can sit here and jam w/ Sir Paul, while I listen. He is the Ultimate Musician. He doesn't need any giant production to get his music across. You can tell he's having so much fun playing music. Besides bass, he's such a good guitar player ! If he were at home, by himself, I know he would thoroughly enjoy himself just noodling on some guitar or bass. His concerts are the BEST!
As teenager I always dreamed of meeting Paul in person one time. And here in this video (and in other videos on UA-cam) is exactly the reason! Now I remember why I wanted to meet him! He is someone very special and he always makes me laugh!! He's so warm - hearted and human and very likeable / loveable.
He shakes all roadies hands. Knows all their names and families. All the lighting , guitar mixing board techs too...hes very involved. .dosent.just show up , play and leave. ..he cares
Great video. Paul has a great sense of humor too. Great songs Greatest musician alive today... I saw him live end of last year . Best Show ever....this is a taste of that show......
I love raw video like these of live bands. Just proves the old school rockers don't need lip snyc like all the new people do. Very cool you got to have Paul all by yourself lol.

So let me get this straight....he does a 40 minute soundcheck then a 3 hour show and he's 70 plus? Only other artist I know that played that long was Springsteen and he was a lot younger.
Lady V oh yeah. It's almost an industry requirement at this level. The performers have to live with & navigate through the sound at the shows. They need to know in advance what they're getting on any given night.
Paul has a great group of musicians who just want to play with him and they are definitely a great support for Paul No egos, that's why they have lasted longer than the Beatles and Wings

Absolutely the finest McCartney sound check footage I've ever seen. Kudos on being below the radar. This is valuable stuff! Thanks for capturing and then taking the time to share.
For those people here who seem to think McCartney should just go sit in a rocking chair because he can't sing quite as well today as he could 50 years ago, consider this: People don't go to his show to experience the world's greatest singer. They go to see a guy who is a great entertainer, plays with a great band, and has as good a catalog of songs to draw from as any performer in history. McCartney always delivers the goods.
you all miss the point......... it's Paul McCartney! and that's all that matters, stop getting into semantics and enjoy the man himself and at 74 he's awesome.

really great post...Paul seems to enjoy getting together with a team of like minded musicians for the sheer joy of making music
He always does matchbox in rehearsals ....he must love it, also probably reminds him of the old days..!!!

Yep you get 1 everywhere. Try hards - is what they are generally referred to as..
They never seem to know when to retire do they and he should have given up whilst he was still able to sing a bit ,as he certainly can't sing now he would be kicked of xfactor that's for sure !! ,he's just trading on his name now very sad he was good once upon a time !
+Paul Simpson And I'm quite sure you can sing much better than him, right?
his poor old voice
Absolutely the finest McCartney sound check footage I've ever seen. Kudos on being below the radar. This is valuable stuff! Thanks for capturing and then taking the time to share.
For those people here who seem to think McCartney should just go sit in a rocking chair because he can't sing quite as well today as he could 50 years ago, consider this: People don't go to his show to experience the world's greatest singer. They go to see a guy who is a great entertainer, plays with a great band, and has as good a catalog of songs to draw from as any performer in history. McCartney always delivers the goods.
AND he IS a great singer! He was always a great singer, and will always be a great singer!
Yep. It's his passion & fun-loving temperament that bring bodies in.
Yep! I’d go to watch him recite poetry with only a beatnik drum if I had the chance.
you all miss the point......... it's Paul McCartney! and that's all that matters, stop getting into semantics and enjoy the man himself and at 74 he's awesome.
His life and music have been a blessing to so many! It’s awesome to see him still at it AND with the same musicians for so long too!
With all his energy- I should adopt his diet!
