  • Early in the 2010s, there was the term "Glasshole" which was a derogatory term for weirdos who would wear Google Glass in public and record everything
Fast forward a decade, with some societal and technological changes, and things are coming back to that but with larger devices that look even worse. All I have to say is: I can see why people are doing this
To the point I went to Disney World to do SPATIAL COMPUTING

I couldn't be more with you that the augmented reality portion of the headset is best showcased outdoors. I've been saying this since the Quest Pro. There's just nothing else like it
Who wants to be using mixed reality and SEE their messy room mixed with cool augmented reality entities? Much rather find a sweet location to use and simulate the entire experience. Outdoor AR/MR is so underrated. (Obviously try at your own risk, don't want people going and burning their inner lenses on the headset)

We just need a headset that's actually built for outdoors, no screen protection is the issue, like burning ants with a magnifying glass lol Meta won't even cover the damage to the lenses under warranty as it's strictly stated "not for outdoor use" hope people watching this don't get the wrong idea and start destroying brand new hardware so soon lol

@@Mr_Lou Well, the fact that the headset works outside under bright sunlight conditions is actually HUGE. The biggest reason I want to use it outside is because people have these things called "backyards" sometimes. I happen to have one, and it its got a big flat top that is perfect for VR with a huge guardian, but I can only play at night with a couple workshop lights on a tripod that lights the whole place up. The Quest 2 does NOT work in direct sunlight because its too bright and it wont track the controllers. I wonder if the quest 3 will track the controllers outside, and not just only your hands.

over the Quest 2 os lifetime I was pretty impressed to see the software mature, meta put a lot of work in taking cool experimental features and releasing them.
The two areas that surprised me that didn't appear to get huge updates or improvements to (even during/after quest pro) was the app/window management for both AirLink environment and for the stock home environment.
While i'm aware there are productivity apps that work better in this way, it still perplexes me that I can set up a few windows, position and size them perfectly but have no way of getting the OS to remember the setup - every time you start the base os or the airlink os its back to square one.
Seems to be a basic area that is missed. Anyway its really cool to see mobile data paired with a side loaded steamlink adding so much more advanced computing features. you've inspired me to give that a try.

Tried hooking my steamdeck up to the quest 3 via immersed today and really enjoyed it, didn't think of sideloading steamlink to access my desktop pc. Genius idea, thanks!
I have been really surprised by the MR in general, I had the quest pro and it almost put me off the idea but the Quest 3 did a 180 for me and I'm massively excited now. The room scanning in particular, seeing the geometry of the space I am in get mapped out, is particularly mind blowing (maybe moreso than it even should be ha).
Good point on it looking better in 2d than in headset, I have been sharing videos with friends and the reaction has been hugely positive which has never happened with straight VR unless I got someone into the headset. The quest 3 has a higher price point but I think it's actually more marketable and appealing than any previous device, although I do worry about the friction etc and lack of great user friendly software so the majority of non-enthusiast folks right now would likely be disappointed by (or just stop using) the headset shortly after getting it. We need seamless robust MR software and we need it a year ago.

@@Levi-hs6mg I haven't gotten around to it yet, I would only consider steamdeck when remotely away from my PC tbh, immersed has so much more customisation and control so would definitely prefer it when on the same network.

Passthrough video looks better on UA-cam than in VR because in VR the video is stretched around the entire 110° FOV, making the pixels fairly large.

Not sure how this ended up in my feed, but it's an interesting use case for the tech. As someone mentioned earlier, having the Disney app loaded and using the tech to secure Lighting Lanes, use the map function and tech as a HUD, or even just something to do to pass the time in line is really interesting.
As someone who just go back from Disney, the whole 'pull out the phone, launch the app, scroll through the options, find your ride, shut it down (so it doesn't kill your battery)' routine happens probably 50-100x but having it live 'in a HUD' could be super useful, if not a bit awkward.

Brad, thank you for this video. I agree, having the windows follow you automatically would be so nice.
Also there's something else I want. And I'm not sure why I want this because it's not useful, I just think it's something I'd use often - but I'd like to be able to use immersed for productivity and the thing is I really like my room. I have three enormous windows in my main vr space. But what I'd love is for the view outside those windows to change to a new 3d environment that I choose. It could be mountains, a Swiss valley, a crazy detailed photo of the surface of Mars. It could be a snow-covered farmhouse in the distance, the view from a very high NYC skyscraper,. A high quality 360 video would even be cool. Being able to look down on city streets and see cars and people., horses in a pasture. A beach with people swimming. Or even something meditative like the view from atop a mountain, or inside a cathedral. Static images would be a great start, but being able to see live video of these places or really long looped videos would be so cool. Even stepping outside into my deck and looking at a different sky or city or place. Highest realism that can be achieved. But man I really want this.

I only have this vast knowledge of the sun from my childhood in the 70’s and 80’s. I also thought this just now in my head once VR gets to that level of how we envision it to be big companies like disney etc could collaborate with meta, apple, valve etc to use the headset or allow customers visiting their parks or establishments or apps who are using their own headset and have things setup that cater to their headsets to have a whole new experience an enhanced experience if you will.

I do this as well (taking my headset outside) while using the passthrough. Only things I have issues with are, battery life if I'm out in the open like in a park or other area that doesn't have an outlet for use and I have to use a battery pack which also doesn't last very long. Reason being having passthrough on really drains the battery. Also I had a similar issue with the blur effect at times when moving at certain speeds. I also agree with the windows not having an option to follow you while going at whatever speed youre traveling in whether youre in a vehicle passenger riding, or walking at certain speeds etc.
I'd like to believe that vision pro will be ahead of all these things thanks to their OS and cameras being WAAY BETTER than the current OS meta is using. I think what meta needs to work on next is definitely OLED lens as well as Camera and depth sensor improvement for clearer and better tracking for when walking or doing intensive movement. Might need to add 6 more cameras, 1 extra depth sensor camera and a lidar scanner like vision pro will be doing to make things not only as clear as possible without a large amount of light, but also make things possible in the dark as well.

The use cases just mentioned are perfect fit for something like nreal air or rokid max. You can play video in corner of vision while walking and put phone in pocket. You can work in park on remote machines just fine with large screen either pinned to environment or locked to head position. My phone for example (s23+) runs dex and full linux desktop locally that I use with glasses out and about working all the time. Only need to carry small glasses and a folding keyboard.

Did anyone notice that older versions of Quest software, you could open multiple web browser windows that would curve around you? The new updates breaks this. It only opens non curved windows. It renders this feature useless. Is there a setting Im missing?

    • @thejaysehansen

Yes, you can just click the quick settings (time area on your menu bar) and then select reset your view (curved panel icon). Then it works like it should. The new mode is more handy for interacting with the UI like an iPad with your hands. But the curved view is much more expansive and allows different sized multi screen setup like you're talking about.

The Quest 3 passthrough still leaves something to be desired, but it's so, so close. The fact that I can actually walk around, interact with people, do everyday tasks, etc. while wearing the headset feels so cool. Resolution, warping and dim lighting conditions. As soon as it gets better in those areas it will have reached a point where people might genuinely start wearing these headsets even when not using them for anything specific.

There was a kid on the Max lightrail train in Portland doing this. The WAY he was doing it was surprisingly not that wierd to see, especially before Halloween: He had his hoodie pulled up, and an N95 mask, so he looked like Thrillseeker going out for a stroll. What was _actually_ surprising: He and his friends were on the train with their BMX bikes. He was riding a bicycle with it on his face.
