      @@AllAboutRVs Jared -- would you have any idea on how one locates an "RV Electrician?" I was told last week, by my dealer who sold me my TT, that they would not build me a battery setup like this because of liability/fire hazard. I know that's not correct, but I'm having a heck of a time locating an electrician who will do this kind of work on my TT.

    Great job Jerred! I use the same switch in a much simpler mode where I use it to allow a 4000watt inverter power my entire RV.
    Mode 1- normal 50 amp service feeing the circuit breaker panel, inverter circuit breaker (this is the inverter power input which feeds the circuit breaker panel) is disconnected from panel.
    Mode2- the 50 amp inputs from shore power are disconnected, the circuitbreaker panel 50 amps inputs are bridged, the 20 amp circuit breaker from the inverter is engaged and the AC to DC charger converter circuit breaker is disconnected.
    Its a super simple setup for people with a inverter that want to power their entire RV or connected to generator/shore power as normal. Contact me if you happen to be interested in a schematic to put on your web site.

    Hi Jared. I have been solo rving for 20 years now. I'm a single woman I live in a 25 foot Class C. And it is a 2000 year model. I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I don't understand the whole thing about solar and why you need solar. I don't understand anything about this extra inverter. I had a 32 amp I called it the controller box but I guess it's an inverter I really don't know. But I had to change to a 55 amp because I just needed to do that. This is the way I roll. I just go wherever and every other day I turn on my generator charge my house batteries and that's it. I've been doing it this way for 20 years and I've never ever run into a problem. My fridge always stays on my hot water heater works perfectly everything works. Why is the simple method that I use looked down upon? I'm always seeing you or other channels needing to improve everything but I'm not sure why. Is there something that I'm not getting? All I know is every other day turn on the generator for a few hours charge my batteries and go with it. I am never plugged in to shore power. I am always boondocking. Thanks for all your videos I watched them even if I don't understand them.

      Thanks. We definitely don't look down on your style of RVing and boondocking. Everyone enjoys different ways to get out there and enjoy RVing regardless of upgrades or RV. I personally don't mind using the generator to charge up the batteries but I also enjoy filling up the batteries from solar and having a system that the family can use with out me limiting all that they can do while we are boondocking especially with teenage boys and my wife. Thanks for watching, maybe we will see you on the road some day.

    Just what I needed! I've been running my Victron Quattro 5000VA through a SPS for three years. Today, Jul 18, 2024, I find that AM Solar is no longer in business. Last year AM Solar told me that SPSs were built to order should I need a replacement. The SPS was the one part of my system that I've had a concern with over its availability should it ever fail. I'm now ordering the parts from your list to keep on hand in case I ever have to pull out the SPS.

    What would happen if someone forgot the switch in position 2 and plugged in shore power. Or turned the inverter on and left in position 1?

    • @AllAboutRVs
      @AllAboutRVs  4 роки тому +2

      I leave the inverter on in position 1 and has no effect on the operation of the RV because of the switch built into the MultiPlus . If left in position 2 when connected to a 50 amp service everything will work but you would be limited to 50 amps and not have the available 100 amps (50 per leg) if you draw more than 50 the breaker at the shore panel would trip and remind you to switch to position 1.

They are sending me a new phase coveter with a few questions asked. I am putting the switch in this week. I wanted to use a switch when I was putting in the inverter. Wish I could have found this info last year. Thanks again. I like to have it in line with the SPS to use the SPS and have that for a emergency backup. Jared. Looking for a better way to safely stack 12 battle Born battries in my coach. I had a friend help me last year. He boxed up 4 in a box (3 wooden boxes). They are on there sides and relatively compact. I like to take them out and stack them upright. I saw an installation with them stacked in two layers with what looked like an aluminum sheet the middle. Had to be insulated? Any ideas are welcome.

    If using an automatic transfer /inverter/charger, whether a victron or go-power, this manual transfer is not necessary, correct? Also if you’re limited to either shore power or a portable generator, because of a single power entry into the the rv EMS , this manual transfer wouldn’t be needed as well?
    The basic difference between the 50 amp Victron and the Go/power is that the GP unit only has hybrid power on leg one, compared to both legs on the Victron . Am I correct on this?
    I’m in the midst of planning my solar installation and really appreciate your videos on this and other issues involved with solar/electrical projects.

    My motorhome has a 7200 watt generator with two 30 amp outputs, which are in phase with each other. Does it make sense to use the SPS in this case. By default, the SPS would only use one of the legs when it senses that L1 and L2 from the automatic transfer switch are in phase. Jumpering, as recommended for smaller generators, of the two together would allow 60 amps, which exceeds the inverter input capacity. With the manual switch, I would only switch to your "position 2" if I were connected to 30 amp or less shore power.

    • @AllAboutRVs

      Great question, the second leg is isolated in the manual switch so it wouldn’t cross or pop a breaker. The worst that would happen is you draw more than 50 amps on the one leg and then the breaker would trip. It would only trip if you pulled more than 50 amps.

    Hey Jared. Thanks for posting such informative videos. We took your advice last year and installed your $40 switch idea along side a new Victron Multiplus and Battleborn batteries. Everything seemed to go together OK, but we are now having trouble when we plug into “some” power receptacles. When we plug into the place where we store the RV, which is a 15 amp circuit, there is not issues. When we plug into any campground pedestals, whether it’s 15 or 30 amp,and turn on the Multiplus, the pedestal breaker trips every time. We’ve checked each 15 and 30 amp receptacle with a multimeter and they seem to be OK. I think it might be the internal wiring of the $40 switch that is the issue. When I was wiring it up last year there was one wire on your wiring diagram that didn’t match up exactly with the switch numbers and and letters. Is there any other reason you can think of that might be causing this issue? We are on a trip now and would love to get this fixed ASAP. Thanks Dave

    If I read the diagram properly, when shore or generator power is available, BOTH the RV converter and the Victron will attempt to charge the battery bank. Doesn’t this cause both chargers to push and pull each other and the charging circuits falsely sensing the state of the battery level? Also, in a boondock situation where you can’t run the generator, such as nighttime, but you still want the Vectron to be an inverter for 120VAC, the RV converter will distribute the 120VAC but also power the 12VDC converter section which also attempts to charge the batteries. So you have sort of a circular power-struggle where the batteries are draining down to power the inverter but the RV converter is trying to recharge the battery bank at the same time. It seems a switch is needed to isolate the connection of the RV converter to the batteries but still let the batteries power all the 12 volt loads when no shore power or generator is on.

    • @AllAboutRVs
      @AllAboutRVs  3 роки тому

      When you install the Victron you don’t need the converter anymore. Most people just disconnect it. We left ours unplugged because it is a lithium converter so when we do need to fire up the generator we plug in the converter as well and have the converter and victron charge at the same time, hey can charge together with no problem with our 3 batteries. Having two chargers hey don’t fight each other but charge together because charging isn’t just based on voltage.

What wire gauge did he use when he spliced into the shore power leg? If you could label what came in and out of that box that would be great. Also the wiring diagrams are awesome. Thank you!

    Hey Jared, great video. One thing I noticed though... High current system's main *enemy* are connections. If I'm understanding your diagram correctly, when you are in the 50Amp mode, the RED leg is going through two jumpers and three connections in the manual switch. It seems to me it would be much better to wire the RED leg to pin 6 so that in 50Amp mode you just have the one connection going through the switch, and when you are in 30Amp mode, then you are going through the jumpers. Please let me know if I'm misunderstanding the diagram.

    Hi Jared, excellent instructions! I just finished my install and am very pleased with the results. On question though. I can't close the junction box the switch goes in. There seems to be no room with the splicers, switch and cables. Is there any trick to this? Thanks!!

    • @AllAboutRVs
      @AllAboutRVs  4 роки тому

      It is tricky and can be difficult with the 6 gauge wire. The key is to have those splices tucked out of the way and the wire on the switch positioned so they can bend on the way in. I just did one this week and it is a bear. If you continue to struggle with it you can always add a junction box next to it to try and free up the space in the switch box.

    Hi.... awesome stuff. Love your channel! I was looking at the diagram for the manual switch and I want to make sure I don’t mix up the wiring codes on the switch. On your 1-3 jumper the orientation on your schematic and the switch match (1 on the left 3 on the right) but on the 2-4 side of the switch they are not matched with the the diagram you provide in the video. The 4 is on left side of 2 when looking at the switch but your diagram shows it schematically as the 2 on the left. Can you just confirm that the schematic is just that.... schematically shown but the number are correct? I don’t understand what the switch is doing inside exactly so I want to make sure my switch numbering is still correct. I am using the same BAOMAIN switch. Hey Jared, we met in cottonwood last year when i was buying a multiplus and installing solar. quick question for you. my SPS has failed already. So now I'm thinking of adding this switch instead. when you switch from 30amp/inverter to 50amp position does the whole RV lose power in the zero position or does half the RV still maintain power from the inverter during the switch?

    • @AllAboutRVs
      @AllAboutRVs  3 роки тому

      Hi Bill, yes I remember meeting you. The way the diagram is yes it looses power at the zero position but I plan to change that. On our new RV I made a slight change and now leg 1 never looses power even when switching. It makes it nice for the microwave clock to not reset and for other things like the TV turning on every time we would plug in for power or having the fridge on while we drive. Send me an email at jaredallaboutrvs@gmail.com and I’ll see if I can draw up that change this week and get it to you.

    I am personally not ready to add a system to run anything I want off an inverter. But I thought I would add a comment about a friend of mine who did have a complete solar system added and an inverter that would run anything she wanted in her RV. She had the system for years. And it never worked well for her. She was told to turn on inverter when she turned on her solar panels. And her batteries would run down. She had it in to who did the installation a number of times. Nobody seem to figure it out. Only months before she ended up selling the trailer I finally deduced what the problem was. Refrigerator was a Dometic that would run off either propane or 120 V. When plugged into shore power refrigerator would automatically switch to short power from propane. I bet you can see where I’m going. When the fridge sensed 120 V available from the inverter it assumed it had shore power. It switched the refrigerator to 120 V and there was no way the solar system or batteries we’re going to keep up with that refrigerators draw. This was an older trailer. And I don’t know how many trailers have the same option. Mine does. But I hope it might prove helpful to somebody to know about. Nice video.

      @paparentman 3 роки тому

      @@heatherk8931 If you have put in an inverter to run everything that’s 120 V on your trailer, that is where the problem is. You need to separate the 120 V for the refrigerator from the inverter power. Without going through some wiring shenanigans the easiest way to deal with this is to just unplug the refrigerator from 120 V unless it’s on real shore power.

    Jared, for a future video would you consider a poor mans lithium package setup. We are not full timers but would like to be able to boondock some times. I was thinking of purchasing a Bluetti AC200 which has 1700WH inverter and everything built in. This would also allow us to keep the fridge running on AC while driving (gas while parked). My idea would be to use a similar transfer switch like you used but add a Male plug inside the RV. Then i can use leave the Bluetti inside and plugged in with an extension. I could even run a 12V transfer switch for some other items while boondocking. Issue is i need to make sure i don't drive the house battery charger while running the lithium 120V inverter, else i would back feed the std battery. How would you wire this to allow both options? BTW great video.
