    This just tugged at my heart! I grew up on a cattle ranch and had the same experiences these children have. It was the best life and I wish so many more could experience it. You learn so many important lessons and life is wholesome. Thank you for showing others!

    Amazing documentary. How did the filmmaker get not only so close, but also so very intimate? Respectful, beautiful and informative film

    That child you see I can almost guarantee will grow up to be an asset to any community that she lives in. Ranch kids learn early to be responsible,caring,honest,hard-working, and you can bet they can solve more problems in their world than most non ranch raised kids. If more children were exposed to this sort of life the world would be a smarter more independent adult.

      Terri Deveau - give me a break. Just as much drug abuse and alcoholism, if not more, in rural America as anywhere else. There’s nothing special to ranch life that makes better kids.

      It can be a rough life but it does make a much stronger person. The kids that accept death as part of life and go on will be fine. Others who cannot take life and death on a farm sometimes end up trying drugs or alcohol. You never know what a child will grow up to do. At least these kids have a fighting chance.

    We aren't in Montana, where it's cold and "dry" during calving season... We are in northwest Oregon, where it's normal just above freezing, windy and WET!!
    Cold and dry is a lot easier on bovine and human, but... We are where we are. Doing the same thing... We bust our butts to win every single one!!! We don't always win😥
    I know how hard that young lady worked to keep that calf going... Been there, done that!! My kids have too.... It doesn't matter if you lose one when it comes out, or a few days later.... Financially, the time and money put in to loose one, plus the loss, that's food and clothes that don't get bought.. it also takes a toll on your emotions... You hope you can learn from each one, so that maybe, just maybe you won't lose the next time!!
    Like they say, buy your kids cattle, they'll never have money, or time for drugs!!! They will grow up to be compassionate and caring people though 😉

    There are times when the cow and calf need a little help. We would have lost quite a few calves with out our help. Many times we drug in and breathed life into a baby just born. We would use hair dryers ...old towels( sometimes good)....rugs what ever we needed because usually we calves out in March which is the wettest and windiest. Some times gonna didn't have what the calf needed when growing in the mother. So you do what you can to pull them through and then they are taken out to put back on their mom. The cattlemen that I know are as worried about the health and well-being of their stock as they are their blood family. Don't judge a industry that puts food on your table!

    Greetings from Australia. This will probably sound ridiculous, but I never knew it snowed in Montana. I always pictured Montana as like open plains and wheat farms and ranches and stuff. Sort of like Texas I guess. Well, you learn something new each day. ☺

      It's open plains in the eastern part of the state and mountainous in the west. But yes, we definitely get snow.

      Left Is Best - hey it snows and gets real cold, but we sit in our heated dullie 350s and heated tractors. Then we sit in the local coffee shop and eat donuts faster than Brooklyn cops. That’s why we are all 300lbs and diabetics. Oh and Fox is on 24/7 everywhere we go. And Limbaugh is on in the tractor. Ok gotta run. USDA office is closing and last day to get my welfare papers filled out.

    The mother calling for her calf at end was heart breaking. Idk who ever trained people to force and handle births. It's meant to be done naturally.

      Animated Tigress calves don’t stand a chance with out a hand. Wolves, coyotes, and mountain lions will come off the mountains to get easy pickings. Not to mention the cold being the biggest killer in the north

      Low birth weight calves are best. They breed bulls to throw low birth weight calves now. It also helps by breeding first calf heifers to a longhorn or anything that definitely will produce a small calf. I tried to stay away from those bulls that produced 110 pound calves after pulling my first one. To me it wasn't worth it.

      That's a rough life but well worth it for some. I never minded it much but some could not do it. I tried never to have to pull a calf. Sometimes it is that or risk loosing not only the calf but also the cow. I appreciate this video. I hope some will hush and learn!

    I just moved to Montana. The 2019 calving season seemed to have been brutal this year in the Dillon area. From the cold and predators killing calves, the dead piles have been piled to much I’ve seen calves in the dumps.
    It’s not easy up here.

    • @ihonestlydontcare1158

      Here in Ireland we killed off all the predators hundreds of years ago 😂 we also use dogs to keep them away. Also we keep the cattle in sheds during calving season as it’s too cold and wet and predators can’t get in as easy.

      This is part of the cattle business. Imagine pulling calves in the 100 degree hot humid heat of summer in Texas as well. Then there are the flies and other insects. Ranch life is not for everyone and it is not like on tv where they ride around in new pickups and load a small bale of hay or two and drive back home. Hot in summer, cold in winter with short springs and falls!

  • @judithcampbell3354

    Wth is wrong with you people! Handling that calf by a child was cruel! The mother helps her calf stand up! Adults needed right now.
    Thank You for sharing this wonderful video with me and I hope all your calves survive!!! I also hope you leave the calf’s with their mothers until they wean themselves.
    Question: why do you have to pull calves instead of waiting until natural birth? This seems sad for the animals!

    • @JB-uv4hm
      @JB-uv4hm 6 років тому +13

      Because the calf can get turned around. Sometimes the cow quits and she needs some help. And there is nothing wrong w the girl being exposed to the realities of life.

    • @j.elizabeth4621
      @j.elizabeth4621 6 років тому +19

      Calves can be too large to be birthed naturally. First time mothers especially have a hard time. If the calf is not able to be weaned a mother may reject him, and human intervention is necessary. A calf that was rejected or had to be pulled must receive specific formula within a certain amount of time or else the calf will die.
      I do not know why you think you are more informed than a generational farmer.

    • @SLCtica
      @SLCtica 6 років тому +1

      They actually do it to ensure the calf is successfully birthed and doesn't die during the process.

    • @jimmccarley3191
      @jimmccarley3191 5 років тому

      All of these are great answers. Sometimes a calf will not stand on it's own at first and if left in that freezing wet ground and slush will die. What it doesn't show because they feel you should already know is you wait and give the cow a chance to work with the calf or to have the calf by herself. After a certain time you either help the calf or leave it to die. After a certain time the calf has to be pulled or you loose it and the mother. That does not always work and the calf has to be cut up and taken out of the cow peice by peice. I dont like telling that part of it but these are just the facts of raising livestock. I am sure the parents would not expect a young child to have to take the calf peice by peice. I suppose it is like the movies leave out the actual love making in a romance movie.... well unless it is rated filth!
