Today I will be talking about "Pretty Privilege", the history, the push back against it, and what we can do as a society to realize our pretty privilege as well as use it to help others. This kind of rhetoric can be seen in television, movies and also on social media. We see many people in the public eye perpetuate this kind of thinking and pushing against this kind of agenda and can have many harmful and devastating effects in the long run. If you have any thoughts at all please comment down below !!

Hi! Love ur videos, but there’s a topic that I wanted to suggest. Black Beauty Standards, aka big butt, curves, small waist, flat stomach kind of stuff. I often see these features being described as proof of someone being black or something like that. However, woman who are very thin with small breasts, and thin everything (which is fine btw, it’s very beautiful) are also seen as desirable. But those who don’t have big butts, thick thighs, thin waists, whose bellies aren’t “flat enough”, or just are apple shaped so to speak are often dragged, put down, and seen as ugly (plus we hardly see any black women who don’t fit the standards that I described above. Also, the oversexualization of those who fit the standards (often kids and teens, if they develop early). So yeah, just a thing I don’t see talked about much, that I wanted to mention. Have a great day!!! 😘

It's such a specific look it's not even just eurocentric, it's a stereotypical Northern European nose with "Asian" eyes and "African" lips. Most of the time that look is just achieved by surgery and extreme makeup.

Yes I just commented something similar but in a waaaaay too long drawn out way lol. But as a society, in the last few years we are uplifting the “exotic” racially ambiguous look. Combined with the hyper feminine combo (small nose, big lips). And yeah we use makeup and surgeries to achieve or enhance this look. Not to mention the filters as well. All the “beautifying” or “perfecting” filters do this.

Actually the eyes are african too. Many think they’re asian but they’re actually closer to african eyes. If you look at black people, you’ll see most have tilted eyes but double eyelids. The only difference is that the eyes are commonly further apart while the current beauty standard celebrates the same shape but they’re closer together.

Exactly. Because Africa is the cradle of humanity and is the most diverse genetically, all possible genetic variation is there
The San people in Southern Africa have eloongated eyes (Far Asian looking) but arent mixed with Chinese/Japanese people. They are probably one of the oldest groups in the world. They have reddish yellowish skin, but definitely African
Ethiopian and Somalian are African. 1. Some have thinner nosesabd/orlios, because of the mountainous environments, in which they live. Cooler air creates thinner noses. So they are not European looking, since their thinner noses etc were an adaptation to the environment, some 25,000 to 30000 plus years ago.
Within Ethiopians and Somalians, you also have those with wider noses and lips, and darker skins (The media just doesn't show diversity) Wider noses andios are adapted to humid climates. As is curlier hair.
Those successive waves of Out of Africa saw dark skinned people living right across the world, which is why you see indigenous people with very dark skin, curly/curlier hair, more "African features" n the Philippines, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean and were the ancestors of the Australian aborigines.
In Europe, the first peoples were dark skinned people, and if we read about some of the European legends and old stories, there is a lot of mentions of dark skinned people, datk skinned rulers (example, Romania) There are coins from the Estruscan period, showing dark skinned profiles
Asian peoples (Chines/Japanese etc) have similar features to African peoples: fuller lips, wider noses. Their skin pigmentation grew lighter with genetic mutations reacting to the environment.
Modern Europeans are bieved to have originated in the Asian steppe lands, and migrated westwards.
Ultimately, all groups come from Africa, in successive waves and over time adapted to the environment.
Beauty isn't due to "European" standards. All cultures have their own beauty standards. And beauty, is and always will be in the eye of the beholder, no matter the part of the world.

I'm a bit disappointed with how the Kardashians look now. I thought Kim looked more unique with her old face, that looked more arab/armenian, then the surgeries that changed it, didnt make her really look European, but now, today after she started dating Pete Davidson, it looks like she is trying to fit in to a more cliche look with the Marilyn Monroe thing, even though she is not white, and has larger features than that hollywood mold. I used to think the Kardashians opened the door a bit against that because they had dark hair and olive skin and got popular with brown and darker make up. I hope they dont completely change.

@@randomyoutubeuser9465 I always considerd that whole racially ambiguous thing a form of racism in itself, to not scare away white supremacists if the are attracted to something not white but not too black or native looking in order to uphold their hypocritical standards against olive/brown skinned people. That and Poc who cant pretend they are white, use it to go so far without doing too much. It all stems from the colonial history of how the white-passing test was used to dodge racism, by hiding biracials ethnic side. In all poc communities they have this taught to them.

The European facial feature beauty standard has done serious damage to the black community. When broke black men start relationships, their women tend to have broad noses, dark skin and are thick. • @bandaqueenlove9134
    @bandaqueenlove9134 3 роки тому +265

To start off, I personally feel like people who say, "you're ONLY pretty because you look white" know what they're saying. They are using it as an insult not because they are trying to educate someone about featurism. It upsets black girls particularly because it's similar to hearing the phrase, "you're pretty for a black girl" (like having to be or to not be something to be pretty which is like being stripped of your blackness in both cases). At the same time, I see your point. I think the reason why this issue especially affects dark skin black women is because they out of all the skin shades have to overcompensate for their skin tone being perceived as ugly in society by having to appear extremely more beautiful (intentionally - using makeup, wearing wigs/ unintentionally - having certain features) since their femininity is not always in their control. I think the defensiveness comes from the word privilege. In conversations about privilege, there is an association game of privilege = the blame game. For some, it's like they're being called out for something they can't control. I do agree with you because being palatable in this case means being seen as exotic

As an average dark skin black women, I have people say I’m pretty and other people saying I’m ugly. I have dealt with both ends of the spectrum. Also it really annoys me when people use the word preference as an excuse to put down people they don’t find attractive. A prefer means to prefer something over the other. For example, I like apples more than oranges. It doesn’t mean I don’t like oranges. It simply means I like apples more. Putting down your own race is not a preference.

europeans don't have a monopoly on features!! Europeans have all kinds of features, big, small and everything in between. They PROMOTE (who you see most often) and UPHOLD (value) smaller features as their standard. That's why rhinoplasty (nose plastic surgery) is the most common surgical procedure in europe. They are also subject to standards of beauty because they don't all fit it.

    • @PossibleBat
      @PossibleBat 2 роки тому

Of course cause it’s all about perception, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it just happens that most Europeans value certain things and agree, but it literally means nothing… and just like fashion it fades and changes with time and social influence… like most Europeans are pale af, but the standard is to be tan (not brown, not black, sunkissed) cause if you are tan=u have money but in the past it was the reverse, y’all shouldn’t take it so seriously and honestly start normalizing and embracing your natural selves, it’s all about promotion, certain things aren’t cool until a cool person endorses it and pushes it. The truth of the matter is a lot of people (personally I don't think this is coming from Black Americans who descend from chattel slavery) are starting to think that anyone who was pretty has White features largely in part because they have internalized the belief that white people are prettier. I agree. Exactly
Naomi and Lupita are considered very beautiful , not because of features, but how they come across overall. Their features are " African ". The so called West African Bantu stereotypical look is very diverse
The Fulani and Wodaabe are West African ,for sure, but look at the diversity of looks
An Ethiopian standing next to an Italian , will look " African " not European/ Caucasian "
A friend of mine observed :" Africans tend to have softer, rounded features ; Caucasians , on the other hand, have sharper, prominent noses . "
Although, exceptions don't make the rule, we will see a variety of nose shapes, lip sizes , skin tones and hair textures within these groups

They Really don't have the range based on prior experiences to understand these things but they too are coming from an incredibly anti-black culture that have been impacted by white supremacy. It's the reason why they will say any and every Black American whose perceived as attractive looks "mixed".
I really think they perceive Blackness as ugliness and I don't mean this in an offensive way.... but.... I think that to them if you don't look like Alek Wek and Adut Akech then you're not really "Black looking". Duckie thot has very similar features to her sister but I find her to not be as attractive as her sister Nikki..... I think Nikki being pretty is part of the reason why she could never truly make it as far as her sister in the modeling industry. I've seen people refer to Normani, Naomi Campbell, Lupita Nyong'o and Ryan Destiny is having eurocentric features. That is complete and total nonsense. They have features that I have seen on many other black women, whether those black women are descendants of slaves and thus of mixed-race descend or 100% genetically sub-Saharan African.
I'm going to be very frank and say that I think these types of conversations hace been discussed a lot by Western Hemisphere Blacks who tend to be of some mixed-race ancestry and (especially talked about among Black Americans). However I think these ideas are new to a lot of people of African descent given the more recent influx of African immigrants to the West over the last 30 years and I really do think a lot of young African girls have come to this conversation without really having the range. They sit on Twitter, UA-cam and Tik-Tok watching videos where people who aren't qualified to speak on these things and attempt to discuss them and its lead to the set of circumstances of today where these young girls end up not digesting the information properly. This is partly why I think a lot of the discourse about colorism coming from black brits tends to be so........😬😬
What we are talking about are not eurocentric features, (I mean what does that even mean? Since that literally centers whiteness, the implication is that white people are the only group of people with these features (which is clearly not true because they are also exhibited on the faces of black people) instead we're talking about people who are not white whose faces fit white society's idea of attractiveness. Even the language that's being used now is very annoying. I hate when people refer to White hair or white noses as "fine" (even "keen" annoys me). We should be referring to their hair and simply being "loose textured" and their noses being "narrow".
I really fear that a lot of the young girls have been socialized to believing that Blackness is ugly saying that whiteness beautiful they can't even talk about this a matter without censoring whiteness is being the defining feature of beauty. This is why I see people saying Normani has white features, when in truth she does not.

The color of someone's skin, eyes, hair texture, check bone, the shape of their lips, and weight all play a factor of beauty if their face is symmetrical. we can't say that someone is automatically attractive just cause their white, there are many white people that are unattractive due to the fact of facial symmetry.

Ok there’s so much to comment on here so ima try to keep it brief. But the best explanation I’ve heard is that the current beauty “standard” for women is “Afrocentric” lips, “Eurocentric” nose, and “Asian centric” eyes. What most of us tend to put on a pedestal is that “exotic” look, which is actually just racially ambiguous + pretty. Now, I’ll be the first to say, I have also always felt that Asian eyes were gorgeous (even though apparently they used to be made fun of not long ago 😡). And I believe there are scientific reasons that we prefer women with smaller noses and fuller lips, similar to the reasons that we prefer women with hourglass figures. (That is not to say that racism isn’t a HUGE factor in our beauty standards because it is and always has been unfortunately.) But if you do research on the physical differences between men and women ON AVERAGE, it’ll all make sense. That being said!!! Women can be GORGEOUS with big lips and big noses OR with small lips and small noses. And to act like having thin lips or a big/broad nose automatically makes a woman ugly is ridiculous! But as far as all the women in this video that have been rightfully associated with “pretty privilege” but also with having Eurocentric features, most of them don’t actually have Eurocentric features. More palatable to modern day white people, sure. (Cuz trust me Adut Akech with her features would have been considered an ugly African woman by most white people even like 15 years ago.) Slightly smaller noses in some cases, sure. But still round and less protruding. (Also most have been contoured with makeup.) And MOST black women don’t have EXTREMELY broad noses, significantly broader than the women at 3:53, 3:58, 7:13, 7:15 or your own nose! And that’s not to mention their extremely Afrocentric lips (that goes for almost all the women in the video). So I would say that over all, these women have pretty Afrocentric faces. To say that the woman at 3:53 and 7:13 have Eurocentric faces is just such a reach to me. And they don’t all have stereotypically Afrocentric bodies either. Do they still benefit from pretty privilege? Of course. But it’s just because they are BEAUTIFUL! Very black looking and very beautiful. ☺️

      Very good points, Rachel
It seems that advertising is isolating facial features to create a concept of beauty
I also wanted to add , as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, you take in the whole package of the face / body. The face is seen as a whole and adds a personality to it , which in turn gives off attractiveness or attraction to. There are theories ,too about face symmetry , which contributes to " beauty" or prettiness "( men and women )
It must be pointed out that , given different cultures do / did have beauty norms, before the concept of Eurocentric aesthetics, certain features are there due to adaptation to the environment
A broad or wide nose evolved to breathe in humid , warm air ( suited back then to the earliest human beings who evolved in Africa ) fuller lips are said to have somewhat of a cooling effect ( maybe surface area for which heat is distributed ) and curly/ coily hair provides a layer of protection to the scalp ,against the hot sun.
Thinner noses adapted to warm up cool air ( in Northern climes : Europeans. ,and mountainous areas : Ethiopians . Smaller lips: less risk of frostbite in cooler climes )
Perhaps, as an aside, if we also appreciate and be grateful we have a nose to breathe from , and mouths to communicate with, we will truly see how beautiful and wonderful human beings are. :)

i'm pretty iffy about features being named 'white'. yes, some features align more with western beauty standards, but that doesn't make them white features. if it's on a black person, it's a black feature. there are some countries in africa where it's typical to have a smaller nose, for example, which obviously aligns with western beauty standards more. and having high cheekbones and full lips is also a feature more typical in africans than white people. i don't think beauty standards are eurocentric because of a white person's actual features, but because they're white. ie, a white person with certain features is seen as prettier than a black/asian/indigenous/etc woman with those same features.
so yes, a WOC with features that align with the beauty standards is going to be deemed as more attractive. it's the case for any race. it's not any revolutionary realisation.

Pretty privilege is a weird thing. You're pretty and people treat you nicely....always....no...more often than not. When people treat you nicely more often than not, you become more confident. Sometimes rules don't apply to you, and people let you slide just for you to smile at them....and people work hard for that smile because it feels nice when a pretty girl smiles at you. Why? BECAUSE GENERALLY NO ONE BUT FAMILY SMILES AT YOU, IF THAT. So for a pretty girl to smile at you, that's like 2 steps ahead. You forget people are people. You forget they use the bathroom and smell funny sometimes. You forget that they're human...or maybe that you're human too. So you put them on a pedestal...and most people are...and they get higher paying jobs (mind you, I'm not saying they all didn't earn said high paying job, but you gotta factor in the confidence that they get from others to even try sometimes)...this is just a theory off the top of my head. For example, a straight, narrow and small nose. That’s not to say that all white people have that nose because that’s incorrect. But regardless, that is the beauty standard esp for females whether people like it or not. So when any poc has those features like a smaller, thinner nose that align with western beauty standards, they have a eurocentric feature but that term should not mean that they are white and that term should not take away from their background and ethnicity. It simply means one (or more) of the features they have is deemed beautiful in western society. I hope that cleared this up.

@@afrida842 I agree that white Caucasians generally have tall and narrow noses varying from straight to crooked to up-turned. As far as them being typically small thats just not true. Black people typically have the shortest noses, and of course the flattest too, that's a fact.
Although there are whites with small noses, most do not. The " *small* white nose" is just the nose size that contemporary media perpetuates as the "ideal" nose size for white people right now. As far as *size* anyway, it's what white people want not what they typically have.
Coz let's be honest most whites don't even meet their own Eurocentric beauty standards! 🙄

If you're brown you know that you can easily slip into "light skin" in certain lighting and "dark skin" in certain lighting.
My profile pic is basically my complexion but a tad darker because of the lighting, this is my favorite pic because it's the closest to my complexion(I'm brown skin)
And when I ask. Lot of guys which pic of me they like, they pull out a pic of me where I stood directly under a "white" light and I appear lightskin.(I despise that pic💀 I don't like it cuz NY eyebrows weren't drawn on right)
Take this Lil information how you will but it's what it is...you are just pretty because you are lightskin.
And I noticed that people say I have glowed up when I am lighter😒😒😒 you know when you stay indoors a lot and stuff you can get "lighter" or basically not tan...I don't like that...if you think that pretty=light, just say that.

I feel like a better way to put the term eurocentric features would be to say you have features that fit the eurocentric beauty standard because like the video highlighted some of these features are native to african civilizations and have no tie to the west. other than that i agree with the bulk of the video.

My Thing is the beautiful beauty standard girls you showed were west african. West africans are extremely diverse genetically and do not have "bantu features" as nigerians ghanians etc... are not even "bantu" it is just african americans who do have a mixture of bantu and west african, who believe in this compartmentalisation of features. There are as many dark nigerians as there are brown to lightskins. There are many with broad and many with small noses and many with small and big lips many with 4c hair and many with 3c/4a hair especially Ghanians. The west african features that americans think are west african, are not west african features since they never stepped foot in west africa to know. They just name all the black features they know general society does not deem attractive and name them black west african features which is weird, self hating and innacurate. Not everyone from a race needs to be considered attractive it is ok to be average but it is hard for many low self esteem women to grasp. Even the white people white ppl themselves prop up are not the average looking white person same for an asian person. But even within highly attractive people there is variation in features.

You can see this idea of “being pretty because you look white” with K-pop artists. Just research before and after pictures of many of them. What do they change? Their Asian features: eyes, nose, chin, etc

Or maybe the person is just pretty...there are people that are white or "look white" but aren't cute so sometimes when people find someone pretty then it's just that.
