  • Iznik, also known by its ancient name Nicaea, is a town on the eastern shores of Lake İznik, in northwestern Turkey. It’s known for its Ottoman-era hand-painted İznik tiles, a traditional craft revived today in workshops lining Salim Demircan Sokak. Ancient Roman walls surround the city. In a cemetery outside the Lefke Gate is the Ottoman-era mausoleum of the 14th-century grand vizier Çandarli Hayreddin Paşa.

    Hagia Sophia at İznik in Bursa Province, Turkey, officially the İznik Ayasofya Mosque, sometimes known as the Orhan Mosque, and formerly the Church of Hagia Sophia, is a Byzantine-era basilican edifice. Though originally founded as a church, the structure has subsequently served as both a mosque and as a museum.
