I was a rock/metal guitar player. Now I just started playing jazz, and find that it is much more abstract because unlike rock/metal, there's no fixed way to play a tune. I'm now working on my first tune "Take the A Train". Although I still can't really get a hold of improvisation, this video gave me a direction to get started. Thanks a lot!

I play Tenor guitar in 5th. Really a great lesson. Like when you add notes combined with Intervals. Nice!

Such a CLEAR and COMPLETE lesson. Many teachers say Complete but yours really is! :) I love you covered intro, melody, comping, tag, ending and improv! I wish you would do a whole playlist of nothing but "Complete Lesson Must Know Standards"

Shawn, thankyou so much for the detail and teaching in this lesson. I'm 70 years young this year, just a home hobby 3 chord guitar player (well, maybe a few more than 3 lol) However last year got interested in listening to jazz and last month got this crazy idea that maybe I could learn to play some Jazz Standards in 2023. After much googling and searching came across your lessons and site. I've signed up for your newsletter and purchased the lesson materials for this plus, Moonriver and Autumn Leaves and will be purchasing more in the next few weeks/months. Thankyou from Australia, all the best, Mike 🙂

Mike, thank you so much for your support! I teach guitar for a living and I cannot tell you how important it is to play what you love. I try and do do videos when I can in between students. I hope to get one out in the next couple weeks. Thanks again!

You can do it! I’m 66 and excited about learning some jazz. Something I’ve always wanted to do but always found it too hard.

One of my all-time Jazz favorites, and with your tutorial, I have hope of being able to play it in the not too distant future.

Any advice for developing lines once I know the scales and arpeggios? I almost feel like this is something that can’t be taught, but I’d love to be proven wrong!

Hi Eric, yes the best way to learn and harvest ideas is to transcribe solos from your favorite artist. Once you can understand how they think the influence will help improve your lines. I hope this makes sense.
