I would suggest to replace the awkward rules by your own rules (which are valid for both players thus fair). For instance the cross on the tiebreaker die means that the winning unit is wounded (and loses one strength point) which is indicated by adding the green bar on top of the unit. This would also make sence (two units of equal strength fighting each other can lead to a Pyrrhic victory). With any computer and printer you can easily design a reference card by yourself (based on the manual). Nevertheless I agree that the absence of such a card in the box is mentioned as an issue in the review.
Thematic base of recalling the cavalry? Commander has to choose: take away a strong heavy cavalry and give up the position OR keep on going and sacrifice your heavy cavalry to create a hole in the enemy lines ;-)
... "where is Grouchy ?" ... indeed !!! ... this scenario, which included 30% of Napoleon's army, likely did cost him the battle ... and should be included with several different entry points as well ... food for thought !!!
I love it. I, too, played a hundred games of Stratego as a young lad, and had a blast. I break the game out now and then for game night (a newer edition, where higher number wins. In the 70s, the lower number won, folks--some Stratego trivia for you). This Waterloo variation adds some nice "wargamey" touches. Not sure about that tiebreaker die though.
I love stratego .with this game Im still confuse between charging and moving. What I did . I eliminated the weaken block and the battle dice. Using who atacks first being same number the winner. Plays more easier same strategy. Any opinions?
Only artillery can attack from the front and they can move 3 spaces to kill someone but they can get killed from the side and cavalry can move as far as possible to attack someone
Game looks not too bad and as you say an interesting possible gateway to something like Command & Conquer or games of that ilk. One thing though, you use both "English" and "British" to describe the troops against the French. These are not interchangeable terms and mean different things. English and British are different things. In the case of this game, it is the French against the British, not the English. Annoys me when people get it wrong.
Okay. I did not know that this was something more than just basic Stratego. I have seen the box & the game mentioned in places and ignored it. I may have to look for a copy of this because I don't have any Napoleonic games, well one and it's garbage. Maybe that why I'm not interested in that period, game wise. I don't think I have eight games covering 1100 through 1900. Thanks Tom. Another game I did not know that I needed. The monarch complaints sound easily fixable compared to some other games that I've had to deal with... that were not complete... If I were to say or describe politely issues with some games.

You can only remove a piece after the oponnent had a chanche to kill it so basiclly a turn.

...an expansion to beef up the game?

I think the European version of stratego has the numbers beating each other reversed.
Great review, Tom!

In the case of this game, it is the French against the Allied (British, German, Dutch and Belgian troops), so not only British nor the English.

This game seems confusing and interesting at the same time but it’s about time to get a different environment
Just play "game of the generals" guys. Its simple and cool.
Philipino, right?
Hey kid, first hit of stratego is free.
