    Physics on Khan Academy: Physics is the study of the basic principles that govern the physical world around us. We'll start by looking at motion itself. Then, we'll learn about forces, momentum, energy, and other concepts in lots of different physical situations. To get the most out of physics, you'll need a solid understanding of algebra and a basic understanding of trigonometry.
    About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

    Excellent for AQA AS Physics revision. The only thing I would add is that electrons can also be excited when an incoming electron collides with it. In this case, only a minimum amount of energy is needed to excite the electron, it doesn't have to be exact, as it does with photons. Thank you.

    Okay, electrons can't just absorb any energy, it absorbs only the amount that can take it to higher levels, otherwise photons would just pass through with all its energy. Then explain please how is it, that electron(-4ev) can absorb +7ev although it only requires +4ev to reach the 0ev state??

    • @pedrolopes4778
      @pedrolopes4778 4 роки тому +1

      Couldn't have said it better! Huge contradiction or something is missin in the explanation of the law, such as, if the amount of energy allows the electron to leave the atom, them absorbtion occurs. qed?

    • @0909umcia
      @0909umcia 4 роки тому +1

      @@pedrolopes4778 Free electrons exist. Thus we know there has to be energy that can free an electron.

    • @tshiamo3524
      @tshiamo3524 4 роки тому

      Perhaps because since the electron can absorb 7eV photon to move from 0 to 7 then it can still absorb 7eV again and be freed.

    • @nonpareil7951
      @nonpareil7951 4 роки тому +11

      Slight oversimplification but: Electrons in an atom can only have specific amounts of energy. However free electrons can have any amount of energy because the "leftover" is converted to kinetic energy that dictates how fast the electron is moving.
      More details if anyone cares: A string under tension can have a standing wave, but only of specific frequencies- we call these harmonics. However sound waves moving through the air can have any frequency because they aren't bound to fitting into a particular geometry. The energy "well" that was illustrated with the analogy of the hole in the ground only allows certain amounts of electron energy. The wave thing is more than just an analogy. In quantum physics the electron is the result of a "wave function" that takes shape according to "spherical harmonics". These are basically the allowed waves that fit in the energy well. When it's not in an atom the electron can have whatever energy it wants.

      @@nonpareil7951 Yes I do care but I don't understand half of the terms and concepts like string under tension, harmonics, spheres etc IDK what're you talking about. lol I hate chemistry because people leave doubts like these, I like it because it gives a clear understanding of how things are working and you can your imagination.
