If you do end up doing a main channel video on an iPhone, I would also suggest do the same with other flagship phones like S23 Ultra and the Pixel 8 Pro to see how they all compare to each other. Just having the iPhone in isolation doesn't tell us much about it's standpoint in comparison to others.
Edit: Add the latest Sony into the mix as well.

Samsung doesn't shoot in log, and I don't think any Android phone does, correct me if I'm wrong, well it's going to be difficult for them to recreate as it's going to be noticeable based on sharping going on with normal phone camera, maybe they can experiment when Samsung finally has the log option, and he's not trying to compare, he is just experimenting, if you want to see a standpoint of android camera, you can check the autofocus channel, he usually shoots every video with different phones

This is the one reaction video I had been waiting on. Love the perspective.
I mean, my perspective is...if they had said "Shot on Alexa" would anyone say "oh, Alexa AND four million dollars of other gear"? Of course not, they would just say "yeah, that makes sense".
So why would replacing the camera have any impact on the gear they use? Just replace "iPhone" with any other camera like Sony Venice, or Red Monstro, and it becomes immediately apparent that it doesn't make any sense to think it would change the rest of the production. People would literally say "why would you expect the choice of camera to influence the fact that we still need lights, and sound, and things to hold cameras?".
It seems then that that take implies that Apple is saying "You can film this same thing, only using your iPhone", but that is completely contradicted by the fact that they released a BTS showing all the aspects of the production, the entire crew, etc. Then also added a disclaimer at the end saying "Additional Hardware and Software was used". That is directly saying that you should not expect to be able to reproduce this event using only your iPhone. I mean, how would someone expect to get that drone shot without a drone?
So...where is the controversy here? I think that this is more similar to Air Jordan's, no one thinks they are going to get drafted because they bought a pair of shoes, but having access to the same tools as a professional at the top of their game is cool. You might not be able to reproduce this event, but you can probably create a cool video on your own, adjusted to your budget.
    Edit:
5:54 Not just Company 3, the CEO himself I believe, it was amazing.
8:47 Jon McCormack, Vice President of Camera Software Engineering, in an interview with PetaPixel, said
"Apple wants to keep an uncluttered experience and will rely on app developers in order to give power users more. McCormack points to this as the fine line that Apple is looking to walk: give the features but leave it to developers to service those who want to push the hardware and software to its max."
So that is why they worked with BlackMagic behind the scenes, used their app in their production, and gave them special thanks at the end. In fact, you can actually see that they are using some pretty crazy features that were added to that app, like Tentacle Sync-E (for timecode) and Tilta Nucleus M (for manual focus pulls). I would not be surprised if Apple requested those features, and then gave them development support in adding them. When they added those features I was like "Why would you add that, is that like a high priority in version 1.1 of your app?" I saw another UA-cam video where someone mentioned that seemed like a version 2.0 type of feature.
The biggest question is...will they shoot the next one on iPhone? How could they stop now, wouldn't that say there was some issue? So should we expect every event to be shot on iPhone?

Apple's video and the line "This was shot on iPhone", the star of the show is the Lighting equipment, the production team, the editing team. The iPhone is a supporting cast in the entire thing. Their message implies your iPhone can do that....sure if you throw in their production team to go with it. The whole thing could have been shot with practically any other modern phone and you wouldn't be able to tell.
In before the Apple fanboys come at me...I am an iPhone user, have been since iPhone 1, have an iPad since iPad 1, have had an Mac since 2008....I am not an Apple hater, just a photographer.

Sorry, but no, you can't capture production quality, on an IPhone.
An iPhone and every other decent smartphone, uses AI, to get such great pictures.
If you could point and shoot a video with one single frame, the quality would look like crap. The software recording, needs to "steal" details from previous frames, to make a nicer image. This applies to any smartphone camera. And it's not like iPhone uses special sauce cameras, that no one else has access to. They use the same camera manufacturers, as any other smartphone brand.
What you see in the Apple video, is not true imagery, it's fake, like in any other phone. But to be fair, some cameras do the same.
The difference is, that you actually could get a decent image quality, without the gear, with a camera, costing thousands of dollars, but you would always want to use lightning setup, to light up darker areas.

i think this is mostly an exposure challenge -- the sensors are just not that big so you get a lot of noise BUT, as i've learned after a decade of producing 3D content: an excess of light will make the noise a lot easier to handle (noise in 3D is expensive to get rid of directly cause you need WAY MORE compute, but you can get rid of most of it by adding a lot more light and bringing the exposure down)
so if you're trying to create something of this caliber with a phone, my advice would be: invest in lighting -- not just equipment, but also put in the time to make sure every corner is lit without blowing up the image ie. add tons of ambient light while maintaining the contrast between your sources and then lower your exposure
and shoot log so you can easily make creative choices in post

    • @Xplozhun85
      @Xplozhun85 Рік тому

Davinci Resolve is industry standard for color grading. Has been for over 15 years. Premiere Pro is also industry standard for video editing WHEN you factor in ALL markets for video creation I.e. not just film and TV (where AVID is king) but for all social, web, independent film, documentary, corporate, advertising etc. FCP is pretty niche (it’s used a lot in the European market apparently) and just doesn’t have the robust features that Adobe’s Creative Cloud integration does - plus the unique editing features of FCP hasn’t (and probably will never be) fully adopted for a traditional video workflow.

    • @akyhne

Davinci Resolve has been an industry standard for way more, than 15 years. It goes well into the 90s. Back then, it was a hardware server rack, with a price point of around $800.000.
As a software solution, I think it goes back to the mid 2000, but was still many thousands of dollars, per license.

I saw a "shot on iphone" massive photo on the wall of a subway. That iphone was an iphone 6s, and they not only used professional lighting and gimbals, but also had external extremely expensive lenses. It's impressive what they were able to do in this event without needing to be propped up by external multi-thousand dollar lenses, like an average camera.

I think what this really says is that the quality of the iPhone camera and codecs has advanced so much you could use footage from it in a pinch and it wouldn’t take the viewer out of the video by having a perceivable drop in quality alongside other footage from more advanced cameras.

11:20 i feel like we wouldnt know its an _iphone_ recorded vid, but probably could tell its not your usual cameras. Like the amount of post processing and perfect conditions to allow it to look seemless is a tall order.
Im pretty sure i couldnt tell at all, but im sure the astute ones would notice certain blurs or distortion or particles and noise.

Fun fact: they would use all of those cranes + lights + equipment for a cinema camera too. just look at any Hollywood movie bts footage (which is the quality and scope Apple goes for).

Every time you said something like: It looks so good because of the lights or the color editing the exact same thing can be said about every other camera.

I think they could totally film a main channel video all on iphone pretty easily. However, to get the same kind of gasp and reaction as the Apple event, that would take a lot more work.

lighting definitely gave a perception of depth that's why they caught us by surprise. I was watching and was like why don't they start shooting with their own iPhone since it now is more capable then at the end I was like, "wow so they were actually shooting on their hardware "👏🏼

It would be perfect if they film a video on an iPhone, and then also throw in one shot on a Samsung and one on a Pixel. Don't reveal them and then see if anyone notices, how many people notice, and what they think. Then make a video like this as BTS and explain everything you did. But I feel it should be very critical, if you do a shot and it doesn't look good, you still keep it in.
