    Yes, caves are sometimes gated and closed when important formations or types of animals are found. This cave is a rare nursery cave for bats. And for that reason comment it should not be entered again.

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  2 роки тому

      There are caves where you live. There are caves virtually everywhere.
      wind caves can often be found in sandstone, up in the hills. But there are likely different kinds of layers under the earth that probably produce various kinds of caves.
      Fault caves are pretty easy to find in sandstone. where giant rocks just break apart and leave huge cracks under the Earth.

      It's probably still fine. But yeah this kind of cave... This specific cave didn't have too much loose rock but some really do. We have a video coming up that would be a nightmare in an earthquake I think.
      But where is a good place in an earthquake? Nowhere.

    The lack of any masks while breathing in particulate stool matter of rodents and bats and whatever else freaks me out more than the tight spaces because I work for a company that studies the microbiomes and diseases that thrive in their feces and it’s ability to stay afloat in the air. Proper PPE is a must in spots like this. The damage some of those bacteria and viruses can do to us years down the road is scary.

    • @CalvinHikes

    Huge bat fan here so seeing all those bats were super cute! Do cavers like yourselves have requirements for things like rabies vaccination for being in close contact with them (well, closer than most of the population get). I had to get mine when I was working for a radio tagging programme. Or do they mostly just leave you alone?

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  3 роки тому +2

      In the caving community at least around here... bats are a higher priority than the humans. We are required to leave bats alone at all costs. And a cave like this with baby bats will be considered off limits from now on. All stipulations are for the bats not for the humans! Although some of the bats are rabid... It's on us if we want to get vaccinated for that.

    • @CalvinHikes

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  2 роки тому +1

      I've had my rabies shot. But it's not generally necessary. Most quitters don't survive don't survive in these caves because there's not much to eat and they are too cold. Weird looking bugs but not poisonous spiders most of the time.

    I recently found your channel and I love it. I’ve been doing some hiking and climbing for some years already, and caving seems like a thing I’d like to try, but it also seems like something one should never do unprepared. Can you recommend me some sources to inform myself about all the important things like safety rules, preparation, needed equipment, legal questions involved in caving, etc.?

    • @CalvinHikes
      @CalvinHikes  3 роки тому +2

      Well some of that information gets dispensed over time on our channel.
      But if you were serious about it you could look up a state grotto. Not sure where you're from but in the United States, most States have caving groups connected with the national spalelogical society.
      At the very least their websites contain a ton of decent information. Could also join those groups. Some of them can be joined on Facebook. Every group has their own way of joining and way of giving information.
      In the next few weeks I will be reading the entirety of a caving guidebook on our 2nd channel.
