To each his own and if this rocks your boat go for it. I am speaking for myself. When I roll down a window on 911, as the sun is shining, I listen to nothing but the sound of an air cooled engine. The experience is so enveloping that I go to bed with a smile. The sound, vibration, the mechanical clicking and tugging on the clutch and gearshift makes this thing have a soulful element that I don't experience when driving Tesla. Great build nevertheless.
Rarely can I pay attention for the length of long videos, but this one was worth the watch.
I like how the interior lights flash under hard acceleration 😂😂😂
i love people making use of teslas finally
? Tesla swapping has been around for quite sometime - there are issues with it - tesla knows which motors are out there and have in the past throttled used engines or just straight up cut them off from using their charging stations. It has gotten better - but there are a ton of better ev motors out there now, the thing with swaps is that they get horrible range.
@@corail53yea tesla is just another apple. Ill never own either companies products.😂
Put Tesla powerplants in cars that could use them like Volkswagens Busses, Things, old Minis not Porsche 911s
Not the light flickering once Chen stepped on it😂😂😂
I don't know why I haven't seen this video until now Larry, such phenomenal content, and your understanding of cars helps you to conduct an excellent interview about a project of this sort. Bravo!
So nice to see Rob on here, one of the most helpful guys ive met in years!
Lol the cabin lights flickering on at @37:56
Love the build, would love to be able to do a swap like this myself!
This guy covered literally everything you could think of. No excuses build incredible job!!!!
this car is so slick its scary. Hands down one of the coolest EV's on the planet but also a rich mans EV and its obvious. Big $$$ here.
So well done. Real gauges. Very minimized digital display. Like a "sleeper" concept.
I really love seing an old cars combined with a modern technology, it's such a dream build
Straight cut gears ⚙️... that wine is a crazy sound
Love the build and have recently become an EV convert (had a FIAT EV and now own a Tesla M3). The feeling of the torque with no engine noise to me reminds me of being on a roller coaster launching from a standstill.
Getting into my 40s I actually want the reliability of a new car in an old car chasis
Me too! I feel like I'm getting old cause I'm finding unnecessary noise obnoxious for some reason?
EV vs ICE aside, this looks very well done. One point of clarification, but a 1986 911 would have been a Carrera. 911 SC production stopped in '83.
Finally a good looking tesla 😄
Yes! I like the Model S best, but it's only a sedan. The other Teslas are all boring looking.
This is nuts. So clean.
Larry, you are usually great, but you kept interrupting the guy. Please let him finish explaining the back story and details of the car.
I am so sick of it. Maybe the reason his best content are his photos.
The problem is that this is not just a build, it is a product, and he's trying to sell it. Let him talk and it's an infomercial.
Amazing build. I am positive people will be blown away by the new electric Cayman.
Recently went to the Petersen auto museum, to see the Cybertruck. They also had Porsche, so it was a very special experience, bookending my first love or cars....Porsche, with my last love of cars...Tesla. They also had that custom 911 Tesla racecar on display also. So this video creates perhaps the perfect beast!!! Be blessed, stay blessed.
He’s missing the turbo motor for shore, he’s talking like he’s lost a loved one 😂 still cool though beautiful car
This car, when solid state battery arrives in 2025-28, will be flying! Amazing work. Looking forward to placing an order soon.
Thanks for the amazing video, Larry!
Really like this... Some makers are butchering classic cars to show their nous at converting. Preserving the integrity of the original car so elegantly. Well done.
Un 911 SC, Carrera o Turbo sin su sonido característico, es parte de su sello de identidad!! es una locura!!
the mini carplay is soooo cool. i want it for my 2022, i like the functionality, but hate having another screen to look at
Porsche aphelia’s hate you if it was originally a SC model - when I first saw at 9:30 popped into my head drove those back in the day and the 944 turbo is still my favorite, awesome build
43:10 Dude, you don't have to explain yourself. Wanna drive electric 930, just do it. No need to justify you choice. It is OK to to be a hard core petrol head and still build a classic ICE to an electric. I think your ride is sick. Be proud of your build and your choice. Stand up tall and let haters hate.
Whoa! The interior lights flickered when Lary floored it @ 37.55. Is that intentional?
I’m gonna guess it isn’t and the 12v systems getting hit with more amps than it can deal by the converter. Might be straight up arcing across a switch or relay somewhere (door switch, or just the little switches in the lights themselves).
Coincidentally happens just after he mentions converting to LED lighting, too!
It happened at 37:31 too. both times when they hit a bump.. maybe the door switch is loose and moving around
Wheels are too big, but that is super nice!
Nice build. One of the nicest EV conversions I've seen. Good design with the weight distribution and custom built battery / cooler containers. These conversions are way more work than people think, especially one this nicely installed. Does the electronic e brake have a fail safe? Wouldn't want that thing locking up at freeway speed.
10/10 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 There's also a padding that everyone uses inside tne fenders, panels and doors for thes(jnd
Super cool build! The only thing I really, really don’t like is that google nest looking gear selector. I don’t want my AC and heating to go through a submenu on a touch screen. It’s just annoying to use and I would much rather have a set of rotary dials on a plate that can go in place of the old controls. Every car manufacturer is slowly realizing that putting hvac on non dedicated buttons is dumb. It’s fine to use that rotary dial as a gear selector and to put some other controls on it, but not hvac
Wow he did hit on some very good points about owning a 1986 911 dme relays etc but that's what makes Porsche Porsche I love what he has done but I would never do that to my 911 I would just go out and buy an electric car which I have I bet that car is fast nice build
If you have the regen on fairly high, do the brake lights turn on when you take your foot off the accelerator? You might be rear-ended by a distracted driver, it would be better for that driver to see the brake lights when you're slowing down. (I assume it's like the 1-pedal driving mode in a Tesla.)
This is a big problem in modern EVs and some companies are just ignoring it. But, if someone rear ends then they were following too close.
@@truantray True, and I guess it's reasonable given the way the insurance industry works for current-model cars. But for a 40-year-old converted sportscar, it could be written off as a total loss very easily if the needed repair parts are rare. So if I had an EV-converted sportscar, I would search and search until I found a switch for the brakelights that would turn them on when the switch detects deceleration that exceeds maybe 20% over the level that coasting to a stop is caused in an ICE car. I know there's no legal requirement to do that, but it would be an inexpensive way to protect my personally-valuable sportscar.
That is a clean setup!!!!!!!!
I want it! I've owned 3 911s, and I would love to have this - best of both worlds.
That is a clean setup
There are alot of Tesla haters out there but on the flip side you have guys like me that drives for a living. Nothing I like more than knowing that there isnt a billion things going on under the hood to make the car go forward. No belts, pulleys, pistons cranks, catalytic converters, oils & so on. I do have an 11 sec 91 Camaro though😂
Certainly a very appealing car, the 930 always looked amazing but great to have a bit of stealth too. Good to see an EV that is not controlled by numerous touchscreens. Larry don't cross your arms up turning!
"Doesn't lose any of the soul of the car....Don't have to wait for the perfect window; power is always there." Well, isn't that part of the soul of this car? I'm not saying it's a worse performer, it's clearly superior from a performance standpoint. But 99% of owners of cars like this are buying them for an experience - not strictly for performance. So, yea, I would say you have compromised the "soul" of this car. It's a fantastic build, but it's got a different soul now.
SCs were produced from 78-83 only, and there's a few early '77SCs out there, so this should be a 3.2 Carrera. Beautiful car/ build regardless!
Model year 78 no MY 77SC, yup this guy… doesn’t seem to know his car, it was a turbo but he called it an SC 🤷🏻 He probably needed a engine rebuild so he went for the lower cost “upgrade” at least the perception of it. The soul is that howling open waste gate at full boost. I have a 79 930 with 400hp with far more soul and 3x the range of this car 😂
@@vintageexcellenceyeah this swap makes me nauseous... of all the cars why. A built turbo would be so much more of an experience.
@@papa_pt it’s making a product they think the can sell and profit from, that’s why they do it
@@vintageexcellence yeah and normally that's not an issue.. but here it's at the cost of depleting this original stock of cars for silly profit motive. I know I'm preaching to the choir.
I'd probably walk up all excited at a c&c only to quickly become disgusted upon finding no motor
Nice Job. The Better e-Porsche 911 ever made.
All the power, zero fuss of ICE. Love it! Would love to know the cost of this swap. Was it affordable enough to make a mainstream swap? Or was this so expensive that it is limited to a few who wanted a special project?
If you want a power wheel, go buy one, swaps like these are super pricey. The batter alone will cost you about the price of a new car.
Makes sense because the Tesla has that vacuum cleaner styling both in and out, to put a million times more beautiful body on that powertrain.
Cool build. Question Min 39:40 why do the map lights glitch on and off?
Massive respect for the build but nostalgia me wants to see the OG motor. Love Porsche is coming out with eFuel to bridge the gap of old and new so maybe one day we get both
I know I shouldn't like an electric motor in a Porsche 930, but I secretly kind of like it.
Such a cool and lucky detail having the cop car pull up during the intro. Weird to call a 930 a sleeper, but with a car like this you could be a total goon silently
Seems there may be an electrical issue? I kept seeing the interior lights turn on and off randomly
That country road is fun especially at night 👀
I’m a die hard Porsche guy with a 79 930 and this doesn’t impress me at all. Maybe an electrician or a Tesla lover or some kid that never drove the real thing. The brakes kinda seem like a gimmick. Oh well haters gonna hate.
Elegant and backwards-compatible conversion, great stuff....just ever so slightly irritated by Larry asking questions (brakes, weight distribution etc) on the drive that Rob already answered on the walk-around, but maybe due to the editing, still an enjoyable watch, thx :)
love that all you hear is wind noises during the rolling shots lol!
Even with the 911, this video is proof to me that a ICE is the HEART & SOUL of a vehicle. The silence of EV is deadening. Waiting to be converted to a believer.
There is a bolt in kit for the VW Beetle. No frame modifications. Fun.
I'm not saying he ruined it. But he definitely didn't make it any better.
Now that is the BEST EV RIGHT THERE
This car will later go on to be owned by Johnny Silverhand, with some of his own modifications.
'not getting vacuum from the motor' the irony. He built a vacuum. Who ruins a Porsche FFS
Great video as always!
FYI It appears your etsy page is down when I click on the link.
Porsche enthusiasts are pulling their hair out right now lol. This is sacrilege.
What makes the 930 cool is the air cooled engine.. this right here is basura. And shame on you Larry for smiling hella hard on this haha jkjk
So the throttle/regen should work like a sewing machine?!🤘🏼🏁 Stitch them corners together! They’re just big RC cars. Too bad the owner can’t tune throttle curves, punch and drag brake on the esc. Lol.
Amazing that its reversible! Wouldnt mind owning an EV swapped one for a city runabout or the ocassional canyon run (if its close) but as someone who roadtrips all of their sports cars up and down California and loves the sound of an engine behind his ear I'd definitely swap it back to stock 😅.
Homie said 4 days for the swap.... sounds terrible. Older porsche engines drop right out in half a day. Wonder what takes so much time?
@@offtrackengineering batteries? 4 days was the time to put the original ice engine back in.
@@shifty1927 I'd imagine it's the time it takes to remove all the HV system including batteries.
@@shifty1927I would even challenge the 4 day time claim. You have to redo the whole interior and put the shift linkage back, wiring, etc. Etc.
Just remember UA-cam exists to sell stuff.
This is an actual hate crime.
The entire car is pristine. How did he screw up a tweeter mount?
That’s the meanest electric monster truck I’ve ever seen😮 #fitment
This is my dream electric car. beautiful
How much does it cost to convert from full EV from ICE
How do you tell the DMV you don't need a Smog check anymore? 😂
@ 36:26 the dome lights get energized 😁
I can 100 respect the ability to do this swap..But I can't sit here and act like this car still has Porsche feel, Sound, Response, and soul..Yes it will be slower, leak oil at time..funny to deal with but that's a Porsche.. That's what your Buying..I mean this car doesn't even have manual transmission.. It's a big remote control car..Love it if it's your car but for me it's a hard no..I could never do it..🤦🏽🤷🏽
Agreed fully… I have a 77’ ROW 911 that I could never imagine it having anything other than a magnesium cased 2.7 in it… absolute worse case if I ever fully melted that engine would be a 3.0… I just live my oil leaks, the CIS system, and hell even the 915 trans lol… anyone that has spent any time with a 915 has learned how to double clutch and really drive a car.
Tesla needs to offer classic car conversions - a battery pack where the gas tank goes, maybe auxillary batteries across floor of car, then an electric motor that bolts into anywhere a classic V8 or VW/Porsche engine would go on a classic car. Then offer long term care and support for them.
Can you post links to where one can buy the kit and rest of the components?
the Turbos up to 1979 were the widow makers...This was a turbo 911...The Turbos up to 1979 were faster with a different turbo (K27 I believe) that was what caused so many accidents... Anything after 1979 when they re introduced the 911 turbo in 1982 had more turbo lag....I had a 1979 and a 1988 and the 1979 was scary fast...
This is the way we get to keep awesome cars. I sure do wish we explored hybrid conversions as well...maybe someday.
nice build
2 things missing, heart and soul. Everyone to their own.
Electric Porsche? No thanks. It would collect dust in my garage.
Would this still be torsion bars on the rear end or are those also converted in some way?
Excellent build. Well done. Plenty of range for a toy vehicle. Range will increase with these swaps as battery tech improves.
This is sacrilegious…
Good thing I’m not religious.
Finally a ‘tesla’ I like.
Wow, wish I held onto my 86 - sold it in 2011 after buying a nissan leaf, took 12 years to get good kits :(
It's good (from a driving enjoyment point of view) that it's minimal regen for now. I recently drove a newer Tesla and the (what seemed like to me anyway) heavy regenerative braking really killed the fun. Driving with the accelerator all the time without any ability to coast just felt really odd. I'm sure you'd eventually get used to it, but it wasn't really what I'd consider enjoyable.
crazy how the interior lights illuminate when he steps on it at 36:29 must be some sort of power surge happening
el tipo dice que deberian colocarle algun tipo de sonido, claro idi.ta, colocale su motor y obtendras el sonido que estás buscando
I don't care how quick it is, not for me.
This is so freaking cool!!
I wonder why you decided to keep same weight proportion as what it was. You could probably make it 50: 50 or 60: 40 for better weight balance? Do you want to keep the originality of how it handles?
Cool weekend car but I couldn’t image doing a road trip with this with only 100 miles per charge.
I f*cking love this but if its not a factory turbo but it has oem wide body I think you would call it a m491 not 930.
You are right, it's not even an M491, but the body parts were all taken from a dusted 930 many years back, it's a bit of a grey build.
Love the build and always appreciate technology evolving!
How many Kilo Watt does the battery have? Range?
Thank you for making one of my dream cars…and still never be able to afford
Thank you guys for watching. If you guys want a signed print for your wall I print all of them myself from my large format Canon printer larrychenprints.com/
Larry, smoke less, your comprehension, or lack off, was hard to watch….electric E -brake really challenged you
