now this really explains why Yellow Diamond wanted Jasper back instead of Peridot. Since Jasper is a Era 1 gem, she was made with materials that are currently scarce.
I love the way Amethyst just asked what was really wrong. We've been through this whole song and dance of "I don't like something because I'm insecure about it, but I'm play it off the entire episode" thing many times. She knows how it goes. She was just like, in the words of Marty: "REAL TALK."
OHHH! I never thought about it! I always wondered why they didn't recognize Peri as a Peridot when they first saw her, its because Peridots look different now!
I think an Era 2 gem like Peridot doesn't have the *majority* of basic gem abilities, not all of them. Despite all gems having some level of super-strength, even low class Pearls, Peridot has about physical strength of a human. Even a half gem, like Steven, was shown to have greater physical strength than her. So being a Era 2 gem, Peridot doesn't have the majority of basic abilities like enhanced strength or shape-shifting. BUT she has been shown to have some basic gem functions, she has enhanced durability and photokinesis. She may not have a good chunk of the basic functions but that doesn't exclude unique gem abilities . Unique abilities include:Roses(and Stevens) healing abilities, Ruby's pyrokinesis, Sapphire's future vision and cyrokinesis. Peridots Ferrokinesis falls in line with what a unique ability is. Her emotional state just happened to unlock it.
Notice peri dosen't say " Its all i have! " She says " Its all I am " Basically implying she though technical stuff was all she was good for before this episode.
I loved Amethyst in this episode, she's really matured since season 1 episode 1, she's still all kinds of crazy but she's definitely matured. And of course she would be the one to talk to Peridot since she's had insecurities about herself so she would know what Peridot is feeling. I was kind of expecting Steven and Amethyst to be tall enough to ride the rollercoaster and Peridot to feel left out, but I like the fact that all three of them were too short to ride the rollercoaster; even if they ended up making Peridot feel left out anyway. Will be calling them the Shorty Squad from now on; Peridot is such a dork but that's why I love her. Poor Mr Smiley I feel so bad for him lol. Great reaction and can't wait for more! XD.
It was nice seeing Steven using his powers more, still can't turn into animals though I see; although when they got to the cat fingers I was just like no! Bad idea with the cat fingers all around! lol. XD.
Ah, I love watching you, guys. :) I also believe that all gem powers are tied to their emotions. Of course they control it much better than Steven - being a half-human teenager, and for that matter, Peridot, but isn't that what we have witnessed in Keystone Motel? Ruby and Sapphire may seem like baby-gems, but they are fully mature and experienced individuals. Professionally trained to, unlike Amethyst. And yet we had all this Song of Ice and Fire thing going on... it's not like they didn't notice or, at least in case of Sapphire, didn't care. There were just to much feelings in them. That could also explain how Amethyst managed to lay a blow on Pearl in the Kindergarden and on Garnet during the wresling match. Normally she's noticeably outmatched by them, isn't she? But they were restraining themselves while she was bursting with rage and frustration. It would also explain Pearl's sudden nerf in comparison to the flashbacks. You remember her in "The Answer", tearing through the Quartzes? She was unbelievably strong! Seeing how Garnet had trouble with Jasper and Rose was a Quartz herself, Pearl might have been the strongest Crystal Gem in existence! Maybe even the strongest Gem aside from Diamonds at all. Rose was the fabled leader of the Crystal Gems, but it's Pearl whom Garnet - a seasoned warrior - calls "terrifying". And that would be a great message, too - she's one and only self-thought Gem there is! She alone chose her destiny. Garnet, Amethyst, even Rose (and therefore Steven) follow the path they were born into. Only Pearl opposed hers. I love this idea! It all changed since Rose being gone. In my view it's hinted all over, even mentioned in Pearls song in "Mr. Greg". "Out in daylight my potential - bold, precise, experimental. Who am I now in this world without her? Petty and dull...". We all know that Pearl suffers from depression. (One might add also anxiety and PTSD). But since she's a Gem it literally takes her power away! With her emotional resilience gone she's at fraction of her potential. We have seen what happens when she's briefly restored to her former self. "Coach Steven" happens. Remember? When talked up, when supported by love and faith of beloved person she took down freaking Sugilite! Sugilite!!! Amethyst and Garnet combined, and then some! While being severly wounded! Sure, she used her agility (ahh, dexterity - mother of all statistics), and wit, but that doesn't make it any less a victory! Many things make a warrior and Pearl at this point outclassed Sugilite by far! God, I got worked up... sorry about that. :) But I really would like to hear what you guys think about it!
I think the idea of a gem who isn't following their "programming" is what Garnet finds "Terrifying" about the renegade Pearl. I really like your idea that a Gem's strength is tied to emotional well being as much as their powers.
StorytimeFamily Well, that too, I guess. When you posted "The Answer" we speculated that Sapphire, being an aristocrat, could actually have a Pearl of her own back on Homeworld... That sure would be scary. But I don't think it's just that. Garnet herself is an abnormality and Homeworld Gems reacted to her with anger and disgust, not fear. To install terror, the abnormality needs to threaten your entire world, don't you think? They seem to point at this... remember how helpless Garnet was when first confronting gem mutant? It wasn't actualy strong, yet she managed only because Ruby's anger took over Sapphire's dread.
I think they just have less power to spare than normal gems, so it's not advisable/less useful for them. That and the fact that the enhancers probably act as a crutch making them never even try to use anything else. In the end im not feeling good about peridots powers yet. They could just be weak, or her gem could be unable to handle excessive use and "shortcircuit". Moving objects that small is pretty negligible afterall.
I wonder if the "lack of recources" thing is true. It might be. Due to excessive kindergardening on planets within Homeworld systems they could have become demineralized. It's not like minerals grow back with time... And Diamond Authority could have been in place for hundreds of thousands of years. So, with a need for new Gems they have to make up for it with inpurities, like with real gemstones. If that's the case, then maybe it's a process that has been forseen thousands of years before. Maybe that's what caused the colonization initiative, Earth included. But why...? Gems don't die of old age, they shouldn't feel pressure towards reproduction. Is there another war going on somewhere else? Is that why they needed The Cluster and why their response to current Earth situation is so slow? That could explain it... Would also show how Crystal Rebellion could have been seen as a real stab in the back. Instead of legion of Quartzes it brought the Homeworld massive loss of recources and countless casualties, maybe even pushed them into crisis they still try to manage. All becouse one bloody officer grew a conscience... That sure adds drama. What do you think?
Scarcity of resources has always been a motivation for expansion. (and subsequently war, when the people trying to expand find someone already using the resources) I theorized early in the show that the Homeworld Gems were dying out and couldn't reproduce in traditional ways leading to the Kindergarten programs. Peridot being a "second generation' gem backs up the theory that reproduction has changed (though it doesn't prove that the change is due to lack of resources.) Her comment about being told she has no "powers" could point to limited resources or could just point to a Diamond Authority who wants to keep the current generation of gems docile and subservient.
StorytimeFamily Sounds reasonable. That could be it, indeed. Actually could be both. If they deliberately go for quantity over quality, it increases the gap of power between aristocracy and common Gems. It will probably be adressed in the future... We still didn't get a look at Homeworld in general. And we still wait for Yellow Diamond song, which is a given. :)

I wish there would be a joke of Garnet defusing briefly because Ruby wants to hang out with The Shorty Squad for a bit
Sapphire would be right there with her lol
Don't forget Sapphire she's also a lil shortie!
so thats why the gems in the beggining were like who is that, they never saw a peridot 2.0 before
OHHH! I never thought about it! I always wondered why they didn't recognize Peri as a Peridot when they first saw her, its because Peridots look different now!

Aww... I was looking forward to a reaction to the "I haven't seen a bed in 6 days!" scene...
their daily motion channel uploads the full reaction. At least last time I checked.
Oh, I hadn't heard that they had one of those.
My gratitude~
What is it called? looked up their youtube name on DM, but could not find it.
Edit: found it.

do you think that she was using her metal bending powers to work her enhancers? I think she was just told she did not have any powers.
I always thought that too
Apparently not, in Change Your Mind Amethyst gets enhancers and she can work them fine.
"THIS BIZ IS RIGGED!"
Every time I go to a carnival.
I miss you guys
8:17 where is Amethyst looking?

Or is it just harder for era two periods to use powers
