This video was a prototype for the themes of Demon Days; the toxicity of celebrity culture and how people make false icons out of their stars. The chattering zombies and slithering vines represents the virtual infection of such celebrity worship and how it turns people into mindless drones. It coincided with the Search for a Star contest in which Gorillaz encouraged people to express their individuality and talents.
Not to mention this video was inspired by very similar themes explored in the cancelled Celebrity Harvest movie that centered around a zombie outbreak brought about the inflation of celebrities' ego. Among the notable studios that expressed interest in developing the film were Dreamworks but Jamie cancelled the deal after they wanted to make a "family-friendly" movie involving the characters.

At 0:50, on the lyrics "I pull myself together" (or I GOT myself together?), I swear I can hear Damon laughing or trying not to laugh at something while he's singing. Anyone else hear that?
plus, 2D doesn’t really..sound like 2D? you can tell it’s damon, except in the chorus, so i think he did it in one take and didn’t bother all too much with the 2D voice because this song isn’t on the album
peppermintic I think it’s supposed to symbolize how done 2D is, he’s carrying noodle on his back so she doesn’t have to walk on decapitated (human?) heads because she’s a child, he’s laughing at pulling himself together because in a time like this it would be unimaginable.
When I sing this song, I have to do it with a British accent. There’s no way around it. I physically cannot sing it with my (Americanized) Canadian accent lol
Watch the Bananaz Doc. You can see him recording this song and he is actually goofing of and making faces at his friends. Then he starts to laugh for real. In which he laughs says “I hold myself together blah blah blah blah.”
Vivalandua Plays 2 sort of. I kind of don’t read comments I just kind of made it up. It’s kind of crazy how we can all think the same yet so different.
Ronnie ́s HQ I can relate to this comment on a spiritual level; as of typing this, it's 1:00 AM and I really thought that your comment read "Brian is dead".
Recuerdo que no quería escuchar esta canción para evitar el vídeo, pero ahora lo reproduzco en loop, gracias por existir Gorillaz, en una semana los veré por primera vez 💙
when I listened to this song for the first time I thought “what the hell??! Who would listen to this?!”, after watching the clip this song stuck in my head, I always sang “bla bla bla”, yet I fell in love with this song
I think this song is meant to be a parody of those stupid pop songs that sound like the artist is apologizing fordoing something bad (drinking, cheating, partying to hard, etc.), but in the end it all just comes out as the same, bland, reused trash that everyone puts in their songs nowadays. Hence the whole "blah blah blah" and the monotone voice thing. The only part of the song that feels genuine is when 2D/Damon sings the whole "I didn't mean to do it" part. It sounds like he is actually sorry about something, and put his heart in soul into writing these lyrics to apologize for something. Not saying that 2D/Damon did anything apology worthy, but I think he is saying that these songs, where the artist actually knows what he/she needs to say, that feel genuine, and stand out amongst the landfill.
I feel like this song covers more than just generic apologizing pop songs but most types of songs that cover the same topic over and over like getting revenge on someone or another thing I don't know just what I think

Game Over well in the Plastic Beach Interviews is 2D off his meds and a lot more aggressive and talks with a much deeper and calmer voice so I guess its his constant use of drugs
I love how intense the 2-D glare is along with the chorus. Along with the creepy demon statue, it gives a really epic/unique feel to it. *Not that it wasn't odd enough already*
Fun Fact: Cartoon Network’s “Toonami” anime block actually did air Gorillaz and Daft Punks music videos in the early 2000s. ua-cam.com/video/PfmDehdLQd8/v-deo.html
@@smileyxchips3092 No Cartoon Network didn’t play Rockit they only aired Clint Eastwood, Tomorrow comes today and 19-2000, years before this was even released.
I like the sort of bare-bones, fill-in-the-blank theme throughout the song. It's in many ways a monument to the ideals and frustration that started Gorillaz. The icons of the time are represented as drivel-spouting heads, with no life left in them that are mass-produced, and the song itself is effectively a mockery of the generic kinds of songs they write. "I am feeling really *blah blah blah blah blah blah blah,* and I want to *blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.*" It's in a way a the Gorillaz take on a "pop song," and I think that's pretty neat.
Underrated comment, and a really interesting take on this song. I was thinking somewhere along those lines, but more as a critique of the shallowness of society in general. Your theory makes a lot more sense and ties up some loose ends in my head, haha. Also, it's so ironic to me that a song comprised mostly of literal 'blah blah's has infinitely more substance than the pop culture drivel (now there's a cool word I don't see or use very often) it's ridiculing. Double burn.
I personally think that it's about pop artists and how meaningless and bland their songs are, why he keeps saying blah blah blah. When he says "the world is very sexy" is when celebrities turn to porn, and then "it's part of my collapse" speaks for itself. The zombie head are the copies of the celebrities that lost all personality or life in them.
""Lyrics"" Im walking to the something, blah blah blah Collapse Im drinking too much blah blah blah Fall out Im feeling very blah blah, i want to blah blah blah Collapse And in the end it means i blah blah blah? The end I pull myself together, blah blah blah Watch out! I didnt need the patience life, blah blah blah Collapse Dont you get too close, or i'll blah blah blah Break up Stick it up your nose! I used this song for a poetry anthology project. (we basically just chose a song or poem and talk about the message or meaning of the song/poem.) It was honestly the most fun assignment I have done all year. I even got a B :D idk why I'm telling you guys this, I just really like this song lmao.
JustSomeKid InTheComments well, this is gonna be long, so ,let's get to it. we know this song was a part of the "reject false icons" project, so, that has a big part of this song. We hear in the song that he keeps repeating "blah blah blah". This kind of represents the fact that all the music nowadays isn't original, its all about the same thing, and eventually, it loses its meaning. Now, there's a specific lyric in the song "I didn't mean to do it It loved me in my head I tried to be a charmer, but got a bit hopeless instead" that lyric is talking about all of the popstar scandals that happen (specifically drug addictions, all though, it could probably apply to all the sexual assualt allegations and such). They claim, "they didn't mean to do it", and that "it loved them in their head", if ya get where I'm going there? and then, another lyric, "the world is very sexy", is pretty self explanatory. its just talking about how all the music nowadays is just sexual, and everything is sexualized and such. then there's, "it's part of my collapse" that just tells us that after a while, their career will just collapse and go downhill. the repeated, "rock it" part tells us, that somehow, with all these scandals and mishaps, all of these popstars still have their fans, and they just "rock it". I hope that wasn't too confusing :( I can't phrase stuff right lolol
No, there are others, they mostly ship them because of the whole Zen bond thing in Phase 1. Her exact words were, "Him, Me, We, A special Bond." Because of this plenty of people speculate she might like him a bit, it's unclear how or why but they do seem to have a relationship of sorts from this video, 'Feel Good Inc.' and 'Do Ya Thing.' There are also plenty of articles and interviews in magazines from the past that could back up the evidence as well as information from the original Gorillaz website. (I would only trust reliable sources if you decide to do some digging into the mythology and fandom like I did, fair warning of caution searching for the gorillaz History is like going down a rabbit hole.) Amongst other things I personally find it interesting that Hewlett decided to age his characters instead of just freezing them at a certain point but go figure.
Rachel Campos-Jaimes Rachel Campos-Jaimes I've been a big fan of well over ten years, I'm probably more familiar with the canon than you are. No offence, but there's nothing you can't tell me. Yeah, they have a "relationship", its clearly a brother-sister relationship. There's ZERO evidence for a romantic/sexual relationship and it's just people looking too deep into something that doesn't exist. When she said said they had a bond she was 10. 2D was about 23. Clearly she meant it only in a platonic sense. In Feel Good Inc she was 14 when 2D was about 27. You see how fucking vile that is? These shippers have been sexualising an underage girl. It's very clear she only sees the older guys as her brothers and the idea of sleeping with them them is vile and borderline paedophilic. She was raised by them so that's like child grooming. I said "yes" to be a smartarse, lol. I know heaps of people follow the ship. Most are immature idiots that don't get why it's disgusting. And no, it's still not okay even now that she's an adult. Why the fuck would someone wanna sleep with someone who raised them?
1) I wasn't talking to you, was commenting from an unbiased standpoint answering another person question. 2) Nobody was child grooming anyone obviously. Murdoc 'The international love machine' (as he put it as of recent), made an adult cyborg clone of Noodle, spent months in the same submarine and didn't touch her. Russel was obviously more like a father figure and even if she did like 2D at the time when she quoted, he was completely oblivious, probably still is. She said it not him, so no one is grooming anyone. Only one sexualizing the characters are the perverted fans not the creator nor I. 3) Pedophile only applies to a person if an adult is sexually attracted to a child. Of course anyone new to the fandom would question them if they didn't know their ages. It's 2017 she is almost 30 yrs old, there is no borderline. If she wanted to be with him (which I highly doubt it in vice versa) whether she was "human" or a cartoon, it wouldn't be a thing anyone could do about it and none of anyone's business. 4) Despite what a lot of people think, age gaps like that do happen in reality and amongst celebrity status as well. Beyoncé and Jay-Z (11 yr gap) are hanging in there so is Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (11 yr gap), Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart (23 yr gap), Nicolas Cage and Alice Kim (20 yr gap), just to name a few even Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher (15 yr gap) stayed together long enough. If Noodle and 2D had anything similar their relationship would probably resemble Rihanna’s infatuation with Leonardo DiCaprio (13 yr gap) which of course didn't work out, but those kind of dating things do happen, rarely but they happen. 5) Who said anything about sex? Because I sure didn’t; a relationship doesn’t equal sex and it shouldn’t. If they decided to do something screwed up like that it wouldn’t be the first time. 6) People shouldn’t take all of this personal and or seriously Fan or no Fan they aren’t real and it wouldn’t matter if they were. See: ¶3) sentence 4. I've concluded my point in earnest and will not be answering further probable backlash due to my lack of interest of continuing such an unnecessarily doltish debate based on probability, speculation and or opinion that may or may not ever be further ventured by the Gorillaz originator. Our opinions are our own and I wish you well.

LittleDragon Steele I feel the same!
Moon Flame yup you hit it on the nail!
It took me a few years and this comment to actually get the song.

What IS the meaning of this?
JustSomeKid InTheComments
well, this is gonna be long, so ,let's get to it.
we know this song was a part of the "reject false icons" project, so, that has a big part of this song. We hear in the song that he keeps repeating "blah blah blah". This kind of represents the fact that all the music nowadays isn't original, its all about the same thing, and eventually, it loses its meaning. Now, there's a specific lyric in the song
"I didn't mean to do it
It loved me in my head
I tried to be a charmer,
but got a bit hopeless instead"
that lyric is talking about all of the popstar scandals that happen (specifically drug addictions, all though, it could probably apply to all the sexual assualt allegations and such). They claim, "they didn't mean to do it", and that "it loved them in their head", if ya get where I'm going there? and then, another lyric, "the world is very sexy", is pretty self explanatory. its just talking about how all the music nowadays is just sexual, and everything is sexualized and such. then there's, "it's part of my collapse"
that just tells us that after a while, their career will just collapse and go downhill.
the repeated, "rock it" part tells us, that somehow, with all these scandals and mishaps, all of these popstars still have their fans, and they just "rock it".
I hope that wasn't too confusing :( I can't phrase stuff right lolol
that makes a lot of sense

Yes. Noodle x 2D/anyone in the band is gross.
No, there are others, they mostly ship them because of the whole Zen bond thing in Phase 1. Her exact words were, "Him, Me, We, A special Bond."
Because of this plenty of people speculate she might like him a bit, it's unclear how or why but they do seem to have a relationship of sorts from this video, 'Feel Good Inc.' and 'Do Ya Thing.' There are also plenty of articles and interviews in magazines from the past that could back up the evidence as well as information from the original Gorillaz website.
(I would only trust reliable sources if you decide to do some digging into the mythology and fandom like I did, fair warning of caution searching for the gorillaz History is like going down a rabbit hole.)
Amongst other things I personally find it interesting that Hewlett decided to age his characters instead of just freezing them at a certain point but go figure.
Our opinions are our own and I wish you well.
that well put together mini argument was fun to read
