  • In this video we test the EC Tuner Brake on 2 different rifles with different barrel contours to determine real-world effects on accuracy. We mounted an EP-5 on the Howa 6mm GT from our teaser video. Thanks for all the participation in the comments from the previous video.

Just ran across this and well....not very impressed.... with your testing of this product. By going from 0 to 1/4 to 1/2 to 3/4 to 0, you probably skipped over quite a few nodes. If you were to change seating depth by .01" instead of .002", the same kind of results would show up. Just what do you think the numbers on the scale were for? Oh, and you did not go back to zero as the weight keeps moving so you actually were at 10. So, you were not going to give it chance from the start so maybe you have a beef with EC??. You seemed so surprised to see the big harmonics shift when you put it on the first rifle. What do you think was going to happen? Even the shift on the next rifle going from your brake to the EC brake, was a change in harmonics as the weight distribution of the two brakes are completely different. I guess you did not review the instructions and even videos of others people testing. I know from my experience on my 300 WSM with a factory load Norma Bondstrike 180gr the group went from 1" to under 1/2". To be clear, I am not disparaging your shooting or reloading capabilities, but just the review of the tuner/brake. As far as the EP5, it is fine for me.

Agreed - try doing the way you're supposed to, not turning it a quarter turn at a time. BTW, shrunk my groups from 3/4 to 1/4. It works great for me. - John

You need to go up one by one on the scale, as others have said your bypassing the nodes. I used mine on my 308 for the first time last weekend and it improved my load from .75” to a .335” group (that’s a 5 shot group btw) by only moving the dial from zero to 2. When I went to 3 the group started opening up again. I shot several groups and it was consistently excellent at 2 for my rifle.

The tuner is going to change poi as it weighs different than the other setup. I have two. It’s a tool to go along with your other processes. Turning the brake only 1 complete turn may not give optimal results. This review doesn’t give an accurate overview of the EC product. You can’t get an accurate read on a load by only adjusting powder charge by 2gr sometimes. That brake is the same way. I personally used it to take a 1.5moa gun to a 1/4moa gun so it works. You may have to tinker as with any new component is all I’m saying. My 2c if it’s worth anything

I don't have one but EC himself says to adjust 2 clicks per group. He also says to keep going past 10 clicks for as long as it takes. These rifles really don't need the tuner but it would make sense for a 1+ MOA factory rifle.

I ran mine with 6.5 cm aguila 140bthp, just as a test, and it DID tighten up the groups, I have only shot 5 settings thus far. I shot them in 2 click increments, saw it get better, still not done desting it with the same ammo. My testing shows improvements. Your mileage may vary.

One of the main benefits of the EC tuner is for competition shooters that travel. your environmentals change, so therefore, you have an ability to tune where you’re at when you cannot tune your load being preloaded and or for winter summer shoots as well when temp fluctuates 50deg. There is a reason you see them at a lot of matches .

Those flyers are because I only hand tightened that Big Break.. PRS is all about recoil midagation. This is also the barreled action I plan on using for NRL hunter. In NRL your gun has to be within a certain weight and also meet a power factor. weight of bullet times speed must be over 38,000.

The test may have seemed unorthodox, But it was tested as advertised. (take a good load and make it better)..... have came to the conclusion that load development HAS to be done with the tuner installed.
After you find a good load with the tuner then you can move your groups around for sure!
By twisting it to a different number and it may move your group but it does not make a top shelf rifle a better one!
I have tried several ways to talk myself into using it.... to me it is just another variable that I do not need. I have been seeing guys on the shooting line turn their tuners and the scores do not get better>>> LOL.. this has been my experience.
to me: Nothing beats a good hand loading process. Tune your load (by hand loading) for the barrel and you are off to the races!! I have since sold that tuner and I do not plan on getting another. I still place higher than the guys using them and until they beat me I will stick to what I know and save ammo on the way.. lol... Have a good one..

Also is the idea of this more so for a crutch for factory ammo and essentially tuning the gun to the ammo? You have essentially tuned the ammo to the gun, then changed the gun so it would make sense that it would have been more ideal being setup the same way the load was developed. do a seating depth first , then a load development and then your tuner adjustment.
when adjusting your tuner start at 0 and move the tuner 1/15th forward and shoot 5 shot groups.
tuners sit in two places on the barrels. on the end or over the barrel and the only difference is the amount of the revolutions.

@@pantherhollow5290 good handloads for sure but a tuner/brake can help but it doesn't reduce say 1.5" groups down to .75" groups like some people want. With my factory Rem. 700 223 20" barrel best groups @ 100 yds. have been reduced from 5/8ths" down to 3/8ths".
I installed Harrells tuner/brakes as I prefer the look but all tuners will work. Adjustments on my Harrells are full rotation as the tuner sits back on the barrel not on the front and using 16 full rotations I can get 3 decent nodes shooting 3/8ths" with my 223 handloads @ 25.2gr. I have sent 3 Harrells tuner/brakes to "Trigger Precession Machine" Shawn Boggeman to test them on his 6mm precision rifle he competes with , another for a Rem. factory 223 rifle like mine and one for his Voddo 22lr. This will take him awhile so vids. most likely not available until mid. to late summer but watch for him and maybe comment on what you see.

@@pantherhollow5290 I talked to another shooter at our range with a 223 but he had a very heavy barrel ( 1.25 ) and he said he tried a tuner and didn't see much of a change in group size @ 100 yds. My factory Rem. 700 barrel ( .860) sowed a remarkable difference from 5/8" down to 3/8" @ 100 yds.
At 100 yds. it just could be heavier barrels don't need a tuner but moderate heavy barrels do as I proved that especially factory barrels vs. precision barrels. It also improves my groups @ 200 yds. but beyond that I don't know because we are limited at our range.
I do see changes do to weather but I've always wondered if it was due to temp. as it gets cold in Canada or is it something else. In the winter I can shoot easily 30 shots before the barrel heats up staying cooler longer and at best half that in the summer. Not sure then if it's heat , humidity or barometric pressure. What's left :)
All in all tuners really shine with factory light/heavy barrels for sure.
