It's amazing how many people who had hits on NBC in the late 1980s and early 1990s were people who had been part of CBS's dominance in the 1970s, most notably Carroll O'Connor, Sherman Hemsley, Marla Gibbs, Bea Arthur, Betty White, Cloris Leachman (although her post- *Facts of Life* show *The Nutt House* with Harvey Korman was a bust), and (until Lorimar fired her) Valerie Harper. This season, Brandon Tartikoff's last before he went to Paramount for the job Michael Eisner had before he left for Disney, they even got Carol Burnett! It's obvious he looked at what Fred Silverman did at CBS, ABC, and as his superior at NBC, and learned from that a keen (but not infallible) sense of what worked and what didn't.
And you could almost include Andy Griffith even though he was on CBS during the 60s
NBC was better than CBS. CBS was a lame unpopular network just like, then, soon-to-be-The-WB, the two most unpopular unwatched networks. "Friends" was unwatched compared to "Seinfeld." Only incels watched "Friends", CBS, and The WB, and later, PAXTV.

And how. Frasier, Seinfeld, and Friends are the quintessential 90s shows.
So was "ER" and NBC'S NBA coverage... and then you had "Viper", "Seaquest", "News Radio" and "Mad About You"...

"Friends" the quintessential show? Don't make laugh. It was dated in the 90s when it came out. "Seinfeld" (and maybe "Frasier," maybe but that's pushing it) is the quintessential 90s and it was more popular worldwide, in Italy, Romania, and France.
And UPN was the real Warner Bros. network and stomped The WB in the ratings, 11 years straight.

And by the time, Seinfeld’s first five episodes had already aired. The series returned mid-season in 1991 before getting its first full season the following year.

The place to be and I think I love you NBC
This to me was the greatest season of NBC because Cosby, Cheers and Golden Girls were still hits while newcomers like Fresh Prince and Seinfeld were just getting started. Plus they had a great Saturday morning lineup with the new hit saved by the bell and it was the first season broadcasting the NBA playoffs starring Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. It was a great time for television
Then in 1991 we had Blossom, 1992 we had Mad About You, 1993 had Frasier, 1994 had Friends and ER, 1995 had Caroline in the City and NewsRadio, 1996 had 3rd Rock, 1997 had Just Shoot Me, 1998 had Will and Grace, 1999 had The West Wing and so on and so on. Sure there were some sacrifices like The Cosby Show, Golden Girls, Night Court, Hunter, Empty Nest, LA Law, Cheers, Johnny Carson, A Different World, David Letterman and Quantum Leap but we have streaming services to help us relive those old days!
SHAME ON NBC FOR CANCELLING ALF THAT YEAR
@@peterblue2708 Believe me, there was no shame to be had. The cast of ALF had enough of working on that show. Reportedly, if NBC had granted them a fifth season, the cast (especially Max Wright) were going to lose their s**t.
Andy Borowitz was the developer of TV's long-running The Fresh Prince of Bel Air under
Norman Lear's guidance and Quincy Jones' passion. After being fired from Day by Day
as well as other sitcoms, Andy Borowitz finally got his wish with NBC's biggest hit sitcom
as developer - The Fresh Prince of Bel Air with Will Smith (1990-1996).
And they still had cartoons every week on those Saturday mornings
