yes that true. in the philippines arnis or kali is part of their physical education subject in public schools and some private schools. Arnis or kali is their national sport.
It’s the “you have to get out of the way” part that is the most tricky. For that. You need to have quick reflexes and counter at the same time. Practice helps but it’ll never be 100%.
Sword fighting with cut and thrust weapons like sabres, short swords, arming swords, or even longswords can take you a long way in that direction. If you stick at it long enough you could be able to efficiently block strikes into a disarm or a grapple. It seems really hard when you start but it begins to come natural when someone swings anything at you.
As for Filipinos, we almost always walk away if we can for a fight. But if pushed to the ground. If we have a weapon, we use it. Even as sticks. Foreigners call it kali, we call that Arnis. If we dont have a weapon, we are the weapon.

This technique works. It's also in medieval dagger fighting techniques. The only thing is it's extremely difficult to actually do in a fight. It takes perfect timing, so lots and lots of practice
Yyyyeah no, the average untrained person trying this is simply going to get stabbed. Repetitively. Just control the weapon, grab the knife hand and control it, work from there. Don't try this fancy shit unless you're an actual martial artist.
The Marines learned this first hand. This is where the nickname "leatherneck" comes from. In the Philippines the fighters would get in close with Marines and carve them to pieces. At that time in history hand to hand fighting was erroneously regarded as irrelevant. And thus now we have the modern Marine Corps who teaches advanced close combat as standard battle doctrine. Philippino fighters showed the very world just how dangerous a skilled man with a blade can be.
We Filipinos only fight when you push us to the ground. Observe the first step of the technique: Evade the knife. Slap the hand to unarm. At that point, you can run for help from police. This is basic street fighting and every body can do this. Girl or boy, young or old.

yes that true. in the philippines arnis or kali is part of their physical education subject in public schools and some private schools.
