    There is a slot for a peg under the space for the top joint in the BAM trekking case. I have a peg with a big ball on it and it fits in there just fine.
    Side note, while the trekking case is bulky, the big pocket on the back allows me to carry all kinds of other instruments. I’ve carried flute, clarinet, piccolo plus reeds, etc, in there, all at the same time, and it even fits an oboe/Ehorn combo case. It gets heavy, but comes in very handy when you have a lot to schlep around.

    yayy.
    hey mr earspasm. i have some news you would love to hear.
    So I just turned 15 and I am a sophomore and this past year, I have been trying to get into our school's highest band. Back in May, when I first auditioned, I had practiced a lot with a lot of help from both you and Michelle Anderson from Clarinet Mentors. I did not get accepted but my director allowed me and one other clarinet to re audition because he saw potential. I never gave up and practiced throughout the summer up until my audition back in early october (I turned 15 like a week later). By the end of my audition, my director had told me that he had never seen someone improve so much without any private teacher. He had specifically said that my air support was strong (thanks to your sounding good on clarinet video, that helped me tremendously and this is an understatement) as well as my embouchure. My embouchure was horrendous and with your help (as well as Ms. Anderson), I had improved it to the point where my director had said it was almost perfect.
    The upperclass men that have been with our director for longer than I have mentioned how he has never been so excited. Our director ultimately gave our wind ensemble (the band I auditioned for) a lecture about hard work, determination, practice, etc. It was absolutely amazing especially since I have all state/district players in my band that are one of the bests at their instruments in Illinois.
    All of this was just to say that I cannot thank you enough. I think the most important thing I think I've gotten from your videos is motivation. Your funny and detailed videos have inspired me so much to do better and to stay passionate.
    I hope you never stop making videos!
    I know you weren't expecting this and I would be lucky to get a reply but I am just putting this out here just to remind you of your influence towards everyone :)
    -Jawad
    p.s so my director wants me to switch to bass clarinet and I have watched a lot of your videos regarding how to bass clarinet but I have some questions. First of all, what is my role in the band or in any composition? How should I play specifically since bass clarinet sounds so much more deeper than the Bb clarinet? Secondly, what strength reed do you recommend me to use for using the bass clarinet for the first time? I am having trouble with notes anything below low c and above middle b to the point where its impossible for me to actually play those notes despite my air. I use strength 3.5 normal clarinet and I am still developing my air support on it. I am using strength 3 for bass clarinet; how much lower should I go? Thirdly, what should I focus on the most or what differences from the normal clarinet should I adjust to and how should I adjust to them?
    Sorry for the basic questions.
    Again, thanks for all your help.

    • @jawadalam4409
      @jawadalam4409 6 років тому

      I can play all the low notes, it is just hard to tongue the notes lower than the low c when you blow into your instrument for the first time. That is what is impossible for me. This applies to all the higher notes above throat Bb as well.

    Nice review, very helpful. I bought a used Selmer Paris bass clarinet from 1967 with the original case. The case was shot. I looked and looked. I tried to buy a BAM but the joints of the instrument have changed dimensions over the years and it wasn't readily available, there was a long wait time. I settled on the MB cases version which is nicely constructed and unfortunately not included here. It is very large and sized for a Low C and my bass is a Low Eb which discouraged me. I ended up buying a Pelican Air 1555 case (lighter mil spec case) which was the exact dimension of my original case inside. With the case came 2hrs of CAD time and we had Pelican custom cut the foam interior, ala Lomax. The joints aren't as tight as I'd like but nothing that a microfiber cloth around the joints won't snug up. Very happy and 2/3 the cost of many of these (under $400) and as Michael points out virtually indestructible. I'd have no concerns checking the instrument with regard to the durability.

    I just got the Reed and Squeek Low C Bass clarinet Case and it now has Shoulder straps, pretty nice ones if you as me. So if that was a factor for you it's been fixed. I think Mike's equiptment reviews are very well done. You can buy an A or Bb clarinet for what that super light Wiseman costs. I have a Wiseman Bb/A case with the velcro, NEVER try to open it during a concert or rehearsal it is seriously a noisy think. You won't be able to sneak in to a rehearsal late with that case.

      The Wiseman bass clarinet case model A is supposed to be able to carry all of these but where the Eb is supposed to go, I store my A and Bb barrels, mp and accessories. So if the Eb is in there, it's gonna get short on storage space.

    Very useful. There is a good article on the ICA website about airlines and bass clarinet travel. Have you had any issues with airlines in Europe allowing you to take any of these cases on carryon? I am Australian and our airline (Qantas) is very strict about the 85CM 7kg limit on carryon for international travel but I am hoping they will allow me to take my 86cm hightech BAM case Melbourne-Europe next month. I really think it’s a perception thing and they’ll take one look at the Wiseman and say “nope!” but the hightech is a little less conspicuous 😊

  • @hellebelle

    I bought a Bam case 2 years ago (looks like what you have) and there is a slot under the mouthpiece hole that the peg fits into.
    Despite having the red zipper pulls, I too picked up my case without zipping it closed and great sadness ensued.
    I love how you don't use the sheet music pouch on your Wiseman because you have all your music memorized. I use the pouch but am not a fan of how it curls my music. It is also not good at holding large amounts of music.

  • @redeyedfreaks
    @redeyedfreaks 6 років тому

    I would be concerned about the first bam case. From seeing it in person there's very little padding for the bottom of the lower joint. If you set it down vertically I'd be scared it would damage the tenon.
    And from what I remember from talking to the Wiseman rep at the ICA conference over the summer, the carbon fiber case is a quad case by default (Bb, A, eb, and bass) which is pretty awesome. I didn't know that the wood version could be made to have the same suspended system as the carbon. Very cool.

    My old BAM case has peg storage in a slot under the upper joint. If you have one, put something like those red hangers on your zipper pulls, because I did the same thing Michael did once and you never, ever, want to do that. You'll see the entire life of the clarinet pass in front of your eyes as the parts start falling out.
    Here's the best deal - find a friend who just bought a new Wiseman carbon fiber case and is selling her old Wiseman case. Wiseman cases are built to LAST. If you can pull that off, you'll be as lucky as me. (big grin)

    • @earspasm
      @earspasm  6 років тому +1

      Wiseman will also refurbish old cases, even if you didn't buy it directly from him. He's great about supporting his work, and realizes that people do sell his cases to one another. Great businessman.

    For the high tech bam, I wonder if it’s an issue that the left hand pinky keys are pointing down, which I feel could cause bending or adjustment issues. The regular bam has these keys (and the side keys on the upper joint) pointing UP, so gravity isn’t pulling the joints against their own delicate keys.

    have you used damp-its (especially bass damp-its) for your instruments while travelling? I'm still not sure how I feel about them as even with them used properly (squeezing out excess water and drying after) I can occasionally find moisture/condensation on my clarinets sometimes (which makes me very unhappy).

    Michael, Md Zalien talked about some problems he (or she?) was having transitioning from soprano clarinet to bass clarinet. I looked through your videos and I don't really see one that addresses that in depth. Certainly, you give lots of tips on technique and air support all through your videos but transitioning between instruments is something that gives all of us trouble. Also, I don't believe you have gone into detail about mouthpiece selection, have you? Maybe I missed that. I also would like to see you show us how bass clarinets that go below E work. How do you play all those extra notes?? Do they just add on a whole bunch more pinky keys??

    What’s the best case for a one piece bass clarinet? I have a protec case for my bass, it’s better than the case that it came with. The local music store I got it from had to screw wooden blocks in the old case to keep the bell, mouth piece, neck, reeds and cork grease from moving all around the case and bumping into the instrument.

    Hey, I am originally a tenor sax player and want to start the bass clarinet. A friend let me try his once and I instantly knew I wanted to play it. I love your videos, specifically the one on circular breathing. In terms of starting out, I have 2 questions:
    1. Tenor sax and bass clarinet reeds are the same size and look superficially the same. Can I use tenor sax reeds on a bass clarinet?

      Max Meszaros Try out Selmers, Buffets, and Yamaha. All of these will be good reliable horns bought new or used. I went with a Kessler Custom 2nd Generation low c bass to save some money (price is $2000) vs all of the others costing between 9k-13k without any upgrades. I had tried all the others and the Kessler feels very similar to the Yamaha but has some nice qualities of the Buffet and Selmer as well.

      @@lukasjohnson3489 I was fortunate enough to get a nice Buffet Prestige low c bass clarinet from the school my freshman year after playing bass for 3 years, and clarinet for 2 before that. I personally prefer Buffet to Selmer, but I haven't played on a Kessler yet. I'm going to have to face this though - I'm moving soon from the advanced Texas bands to a Kentucky school which is much less focused on music (with funding that reflects that). I'm going to try to pick up a Kessler low c when I move!

      It's probably because the bass clarinet they play on is a low Eb instrument, meaning it can fit in much smaller cases, especially if it comes apart in the middle. My school recently bought some Buffet low Eb instruments for the lower bands and I was astounded by the size of the cases, before realizing they didn't have the low c range.

  • @tveaux1
    @tveaux1 6 років тому

    Great video. Love it! I'm hoping you got sent some of these cases for free for review: there's like $5000 worth of cases here!
    For viewers:
    Why you may want one of these cases:
    - It'll likely take care of your precious instrument better because of how secure the clarinet will be inside of it. Stock cases don't usually do a stellar job, but some do!
    - You want to carry more than 1 instrument at a time. Bb, A, and bass in one case, saxophone and flutes in another. These 6 cases are compact and great for multi-instrumentalists.
    - You're a traveling musician.
    - You have a rich uncle and Christmas is coming up.
    Why you may not need one of these cases:
    - Your case already "does the job." It lets you transport your instrument and it's probably fine. Your largest concern will be how *well* it holds the instrument.
    - You only need to hold JUST the bass clarinet. A lot of these cases accommodate carrying multiple clarinets. It's rare you'll need all three at one. If you play bass, it's likely you play primarily or only bass. Situations that will require all three will be more rare, and when those happen, you can just carry two cases no big deal.
    - You already are careful with your case. Sure, you might not have the best case, but you know your instrument is fragile and important to you. You won't be throwing your case around the field and you'll treat your instrument case with care as you're walking or traveling.
    - You don't have a rich uncle.
    - You have a rich uncle but you want a new laptop for Christmas instead of a bass clarinet case.
    For most, I'd totally recommend the Reed & Squeak. Michael said it best: it's the best bang for your buck and it does what you need it to do.
    If you're wary about spending over $300 for a new case, don't worry about it! Your current case is FINE. It may not be the perfect case, but it does the job. The value of your instrument dictates how much you'll want to invest in a case.

      Jonathan Wallace-Adams the Protec case is pretty good in my opinion. The price is right for what you get. It comes with extra padding so you can adjust for the size of your horn. It's really water resistant and there's a buttload of room to put your stuff. The only thing I dont like about it is that the front pouch isn't big enough to fit your music or a Bb Clarinet case. That was a bummer for me, but for like $700 less than a Bam case...I cant complain haha.
