really great for this old guy to watch a young fella get off on this masterpiece in much the same way I did when I first heard it back when I was about 15....
Oh that marshal drum beat was steadily holding the tension in Ravel’s Bolero, a really unique, cool classical piece-which is where that segment comes from! In a later solo album Walsh did a piece from Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite! The last segment is from-crap! Just lost his name but a fantastic jazz tune from the guy who did the Linus & Lucy tune from the original Peanuts Christmas special.
Right ON BROTHER!! This came out when I was in like 2nd grade & a cousin gave it to a year later. Rides Again is the foundation of my rock pantheon!! The entire album was wall to wall greatness! As much as Joe’s guitar was soaring to transcendent heights, in THIS song, the rhythm section of Peters & Fox was on FIRE! All those beautiful drum fills & fantastic cymbals work with the moving but in the pocket bass are still among my all time favorites! So glad you dove into this, not many reactions to this one. WELL DONE SIR! And the journey continues! 👊🥂
The James Gang features Joe Walsh on vocals and guitar, who would later go on to bring a rock-guitar edge to The Eagles. He also performed with Barnstorm (check out a live version of 'Turn to Stone') and had a solo career as well. The James Gang reformed recently to perform three songs, including this one, at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert.
This song, except for the Bolero section, is an improv of a famous jazz piano song called, Cast Your Fate Into the Wind. That song was by Vince Guaraldi who also wrote the music for Charlie Browns X-Mas. Listen to Cast Your Fate Into the Wind and then relisten to this. Joe spent his childhood in Wichita Kansas where he was schooled on the piano by his Mother who was a professional musician. ua-cam.com/video/TAh4gYZdDUg/v-deo.html
When I became of age my mama sat me down Said "Son, you're growin' up, it's time you looked around" So I began to notice some things I hadn't seen before That's what brought me here knockin' on your back door Oh, yeah A closet queen, the busstop's dream, she wants to shake my hand I don't want to be there, she decides she can It's Apple Dan, he's just the man to pick fruit off your branches I can't sleep, and we can't keep this cattle on my ranches Oh, yeah It's too strong, something's wrong and I guess I lost the feelin' I don't mind the games you play, but I don't like your dealin' God looked bad, the luck's been had and there's nothin' left to smoke Will I be back tomorrow for the punchline of the joke?
Before delay pedels ... It's an echoplex. Basically a tape loop.

Ravel's estate sued which is why some copies of this song have the middle part cut out
Bolero is a classical piece there in the middle. Masterful band. I looooove Joe Walsh.
BECKS BOLORO

That’s Joe Walsh on guitar and vocals - pre Eagles.
Right ON BROTHER!!

Bro this is an undeniable Vibe...
The brown sound!!! Love it!!!
Good guess on the guitar. The Les Paul used here by Joe Walsh was sold to Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and used on most of Led Zeppelins albums.

When I became of age my mama sat me down
Said "Son, you're growin' up, it's time you looked around"
So I began to notice some things I hadn't seen before
That's what brought me here knockin' on your back door
Oh, yeah
A closet queen, the busstop's dream, she wants to shake my hand
I don't want to be there, she decides she can
It's Apple Dan, he's just the man to pick fruit off your branches
I can't sleep, and we can't keep this cattle on my ranches
Oh, yeah
It's too strong, something's wrong and I guess I lost the feelin'
I don't mind the games you play, but I don't like your dealin'
God looked bad, the luck's been had and there's nothin' left to smoke
Will I be back tomorrow for the punchline of the joke?
Great song selection & review! Try Ashton Park from same album. Short and sweet instrumental.
