"Outside isn't what it seems / it seem like nothing's up the sleeve" - it seems normal at first "Until it's something loveless digging holes to cover up with leaves / Between you and your pumpkin seeds, and powerball, and Sunkist peach / At 1 or 1:15am when all you want is drugs and peace" - You ever hear the phrase "the freaks come out at night"? Aes is basically describing some jarring encounters at a liquor store or bodega when you're hoping for a quick, uneventful trip where you don't have to interact with anybody. "All you get is waves and waves of uninvited company / Ranger, cleric, hunter, thief / Druid, Vandal, huckster, priest" - he's using archetypes to describe the kinds of invasive people you might run into in this situation. "Amateur usurpers and catechism deserters / re-tuning truffle pig noses to catalytic converters" - more descriptions of late night weirdos. "Usurpers" implies sketchy people, "catechism deserters" are people who have lost their faith. The bit about truffles and catalytic converters suggests people who used to be seeking something of value but end up sucking down poison. But also, people are stealing catalytic converters more lately, so it's like -- people who used to be doing okay but have turned to a life of crime. "In between the stirring creatures, I'm keen to the furthest needle drop / before requesting stitches, it is not that type of needle, dog" - describes sketchy people making you nervous, so you're on alert. "Needle drop" suggests he'd be able to hear a pin drop, but "it is not that type of needle" implies some of the "creatures" might be mentally unstable IV drug users. "Dog, the truest unicorn of all is human at rest / waltzing through some hood the future forgets" - he's not just saying comfort and rest are rare, he's saying you're never going to feel safe when you're in sketchy af surroundings. "I just been cooped up in that cuckoo's nest, one phase after complaining / which depending on your frame is apathy or acclimating" - he's been avoiding people, which you can interpret as either lack of interest (depression?) OR gradually trying to get accustomed to new and uncomfortable surroundings. "Happy cutting off and jumping in and yelling someone shut the top / it isn't just some FunYun run that got him on that 'cut the lock'" - It doesn't take much for him to want to escape into his apartment, but he wasn't just trying to go get a snack, he's grappling with mental health. "Inside of the box is just another box" - the home he sees as a sanctuary away from all the chaos is, in its own fashion, a prison.
Love your channel man, so happy you covered this one! I gotta disagree hard that the rhymes highlighted makes the song listenable..I got Lupe’s verse on smash since this dropped. The more you listen to multisyllabic rhymes the more you can see it in your mind’s eye, and I really appreciate that.
