You don't need to remove the engine mount nor the exhaust. It's a big tricky but the starter will come out if you rotate it and slide the solenoid/terminal end out first. I have a 1996 Trooper and have successfully replaced the starter 3 times without having to do anything but put the driver side front wheel up a rhinoramp, crawl underneath, remove the under crossbar then remove the two mounting bolts on the starter, unplug the starter control terminal, and remove the battery cable terminal. All you gotta do is rotate the starter and slide it out solenoid/battery terminal end first.
I tried to pull the starter from my 1999 Trooper without moving the engine. Not sure how you managed to get it out, will try again tomorrow. Might need to lift the engine for more clearance.

Easy to follow and works like a champ! For those of us doing it at home you can access the engine Mount and move the starter around etc after you take the driver side tire off. Total time 90mins, but mainly was moving starter and referencing this video.
Used the info from your vid and took off the mount bolts then lifted the motor from the left side. Still took me 3 hours over 2 days but I got the starter out and back in. I was on my back the whole time in SE Portland. But you saved me so much time and headache. Thank you for your advice and expertise.
Wow, what a job. I like my Chevy when it comes to starters. Two bolts, two wires and your done. Of course you know that. You got this job down to a science. Nicely completed Tim.
If you use this method, when you remove the first engine mounting bolt, stick a long thick screwdriver into that whole to keep it aligned.The thicker the screwdriver (closest to the thickness of the bolt you removed), the better. It will keep the holes aligned when you lower the engine. I am dealing with a 25 year old vehicle so it still took 5 hours, but it would have taken longer if I used the method in the service manual as the bolts on the exhaust are all rusted. This worked well. I would advise you to remove the cross support between the 2 front tires. Does not take much time at all and it makes the job a lot easier. Especially if you are on your back.
Watched the lesson how to replace a 1995 Izuzu, Trooper starter. It has been sometime since.. but the video really orientated me how to finagle the starter replacement again. Last time the exhaust was disconnected. Whew! I'm not sure I want to lift the engine, although I've did this in other auto's. But this method makes the job easier from the video. Thanks! Thanks for the video. Just one note for those proceeding with this job. I followed these instructions, removed the starter side motor mount bolts and then went to wrenching on the starter. Come to find out I did not need to jack up the engine to access or remove the starter. I did need a swivel for the outside mounting bolt (the longer of the two, big thanks!), but after removing both bolts the starter dropped out like a baby from a fully dilated escape hatch. I found the hardest part of the job holding the new starter in place until I could get a bolt started. I got my son's help there. The whole job would have taken about an hour, but now I have to replace them motor mount bolts. Oh swell, thanks anyway. P.S. I bought a NEW starter at Rock Auto so I don't have to return the core. I'll tear that old one apart and see if I can repair it. Maybe just the solenoid. Work safe peeps! Once again, thanks for the video! My vehicle is a 2001 Isuzu Trooper Limited.

Good advice on safe jacking procedures. I have a gravel driveway but when I had a porch built the concrete contractor asked if he could dump some excess gravel in my gravel driveway. This was what I would call medium stone with a lot of dust. I recognized this as similar to stuff I had seen used for road bed prep on a job I worked on so I said yes. That gravel compacted so it is almost as hard as concrete. There is no loose gravel now.I have left cars on jack stands for days in rainy weather and those jack stands never sunk at all, not 1 mm. The jack doesn't roll easily though.
Just did one on a 3.2L. I didn't loosen the motor mounts though, decided to just try raising the engine with what the motor mounts would allow first. I ended up not having to raise the engine all that much for the starter to come out. I did remove the crossmember though which makes it easier if you're working on the floor and makes it so you don't have to use a swivel or u-joint socket to get at the bolts. One thing people should note is to check the old starter to see if the dowels came out with it and didn't stay in the engine. If they did stay then just remove the dowels from the new starter before mounting it back on(as long as the old ones still look in good shape). I didn't notice this myself until I had the new starter in it's place ready to be bolted and with the engine already lowered back down. Removing either set of dowels is a bit more tricky when the starter is already tucked up there and this is the only thing that kept me from finishing the job as quick as I'd like.
Sounds like you just completed the 8 hour OSHA refresher course! Good stuff and I like that you keep safety first. Nice shortcut on the starter R&R - I'd love to have a lift, but priorities get in the way.
98 trooper 3.2 "4x4" starter removal tip = remove 3 of 4 bolts so motor mount can swing away from starter so starter can have more room to slide back. Of course engine needs to be supported and 2 bolts from top removed just like video!
Great video. I have a word of caution for anyone using this technique though. In my 1992 Troop i raised the motor far enough to squeeze the starter out and the passenger side valve cover tore off the heater hose flush with the firewall. Now I need a good video about heater core replacement. I love my Trooper but working on it is a nightmare. Just glad they are so well built that I don't have to work on it often.

I've just been trying to get the starter out of my 1999 Holden Jackaroo (Australia). Tried and tried this method with no success. Finally got it out of the side of the motor by removing the engine mount.

Hey, auto guy! What's the socket U-joint you're using? I've never seen this it looks better than the standard U-joint socket. Great video, although I had to disassemble the exhaust but since this was replaced once I had use grease on the bolt studs n' nuts this retarded the rust, I had to use W-D 40 n' soaked it this time.
Oh, BTW, I got an estimate from my local repair shop to replace this starter for $435. My 1999 Rodeo is pretty much junk and on its last legs so not worth it. But, I can buy a replacement starter for around $135. So if I can do the work myself it would be worth it, otherwise I am heading for a car payment which I don't want to do right now.

I used some wood as a buffer under oil pan,hoisted almost fully extended with floor jack,still couldn't get starter to pass muffler header..what am I doing wrong ??

Thank you for posting. Diy'er here with no lift or pit an on gravel lol. The worst. I know... Bought a new batt, put it in and click... But also I noticed all my lghts go out completly. After a min something resets cuz I open the door an boom lights again. Can the starter cause this? Should've listened to my dad lol he said starter. An I said batt. I was wrong. You were right pop. Lol
during this I found a line that is connected to a canister under the drivers door but is not connected on the other end. It's hanging down in the starter area but I can't see what to connect it to. Any ideas?
Smashing job :-D, No removal of rusty or R.T.B (Ready To Break) parts :-D. I think even with your clever method, it will still be a pain for the diy'er, unless they have access to the old fashoned brick lined pit. My mate has some old english cars, i did say "Build a pit" its a poor mans car lift LOL :-D.
Pits are cool. If I didn't have a lift I would do this one in my driveway, its not too bad. If I had to deal with rust like Eric O and those guys I would find another occupation! Blessings my friend!
I did try to watch eric o quite a few times, he finds the most complex and long winded way of repairing electrical faults, he is a very clever man but i cant watch him "Beat around the bush" to find a fault. Often he ignores the basics and goes on a boring trip. Sorry if you like him, i would rather watch you, you are direct with your logic and get the job sorted fast for your customer. :-D
I have only watched a few of Eric's videos. He is a super sharp tech. Maybe one of the smartest I know. Ive known Eric long before he ever made a video on UA-cam. He certainly has a great presence on camera and his channel has done well. We all have different taste and style. Im glad you like my get her done style because I'm not much for making a production out of a quick fix. 😀
I wonder if Eric's way of doing repairs is to figure it all out before making the videos that we do see. I am kind of guessing that he makes each video that way so all we really (and should) see it what works best and of course the finished product. I wouldn't doubt that there is a whole lot more of Eric's "man hours" that we simply don't see. That said - I sure do miss the trial and error steps of doing some repairs from total beginning to complete end with the real world experience along the way that we get with Tim's awesome videos. Honestly, to me, they are both great mechanics. I do admit that I do favor one over the other. I also really like how Brian of FordTechMakuloco and how he makes his videos in which he is without a doubt, Always Top Notch - Always Providing Awesome Repair Information.
Hey Bruddah, I seen you over at the SMA channel. That's OK, there is a lot in my videos you don't see either...I try to edit out all the grunting and profanity. That usually means 50% or more of the footage hits the cutting room floor. Just want to keep it PG-13 for you young guys.
The replacement looks the same shape/size as oem. Has anyone done this with what looks like the refreshed version of this starter most people sell? Basically the starter motor is furthest away from mounting bolts, solenoid closest, (reversed from oem design) seems a bit beefier too and the the battery lead seems like it would be impossible to snug down on the common non-oem starters people sell for this model based on this vid....?
I'll leave this up.. was somewhat mistaken... but it looks the model starter I described above is to the 2001 Honda Passport (based on the manual it looks like what I described above) so there are some differences between the earlier Trooper Starters vs. the 2001 Honda Passport. I guess. but a lot of other things are the same of course.
Great video! Interesting: my '95 Trooper V6 has a 1' section of pipe off the manifold that was easily removed (three studs, one bolt) allowing ample access to the starter. This looks like a later model so it seems strange to me that they would make it more complicated when they already had a good solution. I bought mine with 154K on the clock for $3500 and just turned 200K (with 1000's of dirt miles). I did one today , my goodness what a nightmare , 8 hours . Almost no room hand room at all .
i found it easyer to jack the engine up remove the top heat sheld and remove and replace from the top :D having issues getting it to line up

during this I found a line that is connected to a canister under the drivers door but is not connected on the other end. It's hanging down in the starter area but I can't see what to connect it to. Any ideas?
these ac compressors are they to cycle on and off on the trooper
Those things are pretty common here. A lot of them claim to be 'tuned by Lotus'
They probably still run like crap. If you tune one up don't get the wrong plug boot in the #6 cylinder...it will misfire like crazy

I think even with your clever method, it will still be a pain for the diy'er, unless they have access to the old fashoned brick lined pit.
My mate has some old english cars, i did say "Build a pit" its a poor mans car lift LOL :-D.
Pits are cool. If I didn't have a lift I would do this one in my driveway, its not too bad. If I had to deal with rust like Eric O and those guys I would find another occupation! Blessings my friend!
I did try to watch eric o quite a few times, he finds the most complex and long winded way of repairing electrical faults, he is a very clever man but i cant watch him "Beat around the bush" to find a fault.
Often he ignores the basics and goes on a boring trip.
Sorry if you like him, i would rather watch you, you are direct with your logic and get the job sorted fast for your customer. :-D
I have only watched a few of Eric's videos. He is a super sharp tech. Maybe one of the smartest I know. Ive known Eric long before he ever made a video on UA-cam. He certainly has a great presence on camera and his channel has done well. We all have different taste and style. Im glad you like my get her done style because I'm not much for making a production out of a quick fix. 😀
I wonder if Eric's way of doing repairs is to figure it all out before making the videos that we do see. I am kind of guessing that he makes each video that way so all we really (and should) see it what works best and of course the finished product. I wouldn't doubt that there is a whole lot more of Eric's "man hours" that we simply don't see. That said - I sure do miss the trial and error steps of doing some repairs from total beginning to complete end with the real world experience along the way that we get with Tim's awesome videos. Honestly, to me, they are both great mechanics. I do admit that I do favor one over the other. I also really like how Brian of FordTechMakuloco and how he makes his videos in which he is without a doubt, Always Top Notch - Always Providing Awesome Repair Information.
Hey Bruddah, I seen you over at the SMA channel. That's OK, there is a lot in my videos you don't see either...I try to edit out all the grunting and profanity. That usually means 50% or more of the footage hits the cutting room floor. Just want to keep it PG-13 for you young guys.

mine is a 97 Isuzu Rodeo 3.2 in it does it change the starter out the same way
I couldn't hear what size socket for the little plate after you took the first 14 mm starter bolt out..
Probably 12 or 14mm.

Finally got the crazy thing unbolted & free. Now just have to get it down..

The replacement looks the same shape/size as oem. Has anyone done this with what looks like the refreshed version of this starter most people sell? Basically the starter motor is furthest away from mounting bolts, solenoid closest, (reversed from oem design) seems a bit beefier too and the the battery lead seems like it would be impossible to snug down on the common non-oem starters people sell for this model based on this vid....?
I'll leave this up.. was somewhat mistaken... but it looks the model starter I described above is to the 2001 Honda Passport (based on the manual it looks like what I described above) so there are some differences between the earlier Trooper Starters vs. the 2001 Honda Passport. I guess. but a lot of other things are the same of course.
How much would it cost to have a mechanic perform this task?
Price will vary depending on the area but $300-400 is probably close

Great video! Interesting: my '95 Trooper V6 has a 1' section of pipe off the manifold that was easily removed (three studs, one bolt) allowing ample access to the starter. This looks like a later model so it seems strange to me that they would make it more complicated when they already had a good solution. I bought mine with 154K on the clock for $3500 and just turned 200K (with 1000's of dirt miles). This is my second mid-90's Trooper and they are, in my experience, absolutely bullet proof (aside from things like starters). Just ask this guy: ua-cam.com/video/_7S1LMzTloc/v-deo.html : )

We used to drill holes in the pistons so the oil would drain back into the crankcase. Wonderful trucks. The 3.5 just ate cranks.

Is it really that poorly designed? I have an '02 Trooper... Just replaced the speed sensor in 5 minutes... Am glad this video is here for when I need to replace the starter... Trooper has been a tank so far...
