Does anyone else cringe, though, in his singing "THE mouth" in lieu of "HER mouth"? ...As it does belong to her, and presumably, she is acting with some agency-- and, indeed, empowerment-- in the situation (which he's indicated in interviews is an intended dynamic of the song)? To my ears, phrasing it this way sounds curiously (and almost offensively!) objectifying... as if she's a litany of body parts THAT ARE pleasing him before she's a woman WHO IS pleasing him... but I've listened to enough of his interviews to know that's not where he's likely coming from, and that he is anything BUT insensitive to nuances of this nature. So, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ??? ... color me stumped. I'm curious to hear alternative explanations for the choice. (It's otherwise a clever, sexy song/A++ songwriter/would listen to again. Heh.) :)
theadiashow i think youre just hearing it wrong. The sound mixing for this performance wasn’t exactly stellar. And he does have a tendency to get swallowed by instruments when he’s singing softer. So perhaps you just misheard him. That being said, I do believe this performance was also one of his first with the new material, so he could have forgotten the lyrics out of nerves etc. which has happened in the past.
@@ambrosehillsims - I rewatched this after considering your comment, and I'm still hearing him sing "*the* mouth"... on all three occasions where that line appears in the song. I found a few other uploads of this song performed live since this show, and hear the same thing. In some cases, the audio is quite clear. I hope my curiosity about the lyric choice isn't mistaken for criticism... it just registers to *my* ears as a cheeky euphemism made in an oddly depersonalizing way. It's striking to me every time I hear it, but of course, personal interpretations are always so subjective.
theadiashow I’ve heard him say in an interview (re: his lesbian following) that he’s become a little conscious of using gendered pronouns so that his songs aren’t strictly heterosexual, so that listeners of different genders and sexualities can relate to the songs

Hozier, the man who writes songs about how sexy it is that his baby is powerful enough to destroy the world and he'll just stand back and bask in her glory as she does it, you think that man would ever intend what you're implying? So even if he is saying The, It definitely doesn't mean what you think it means. Knowing Hozier, He's probably trying to be more inclusive to non binary people or something.
I feel confident he alternates her and the in an effort to not make each hetero. The first two times, he very clearly says “her mouth”. I trust this man as totally conscious, non sexist and feminist.
