There's also one other alcoholic beverage that many Japanese will drink. It's also made with rice but comes from Korea called soju. It is considered a wine in many parts of the US but some soju is 48 proof. In Los Angeles a number of places that don't have a hard liquor license but have a beer and wine license use it for mixed drinks. It's also harsher than vodka and have seen people who chug tequila choke on a single shot of this drink.

@@ferbhentaireviews7415 I used to do drinking contests with it at this one bar in west Los Angeles. Even the bar tenders would join in since it was after the other customers left and they were closing out the register (my friends were DJ's there. Yes it has less alcohol than vodka and considered a wine that can be up to 48 proof (used by bars that have only beer and wine license). It also has a much nastier taste and hits you much quicker/harder than actual hard liquor. Most westerners can't handle it straight.

To shotgun a beer, you need to have the top of the can tilted downward so when you stab the bottom, the air bubble is there and it wont spray everywhere, you start drinking it after puncturing the can, as you tilt your head up you then pop the top open. Cleanest way of doing it.

The sake stipulation under law here is Japan at the moment is 22% or less ABV. Anything over that is classified as zashu (literally “other alcohol”). Should also mention that within sake as a category, a lot of it is either brewed to point (aiming to achieve a certain ABV) or watered down after fermentation has stopped. “Real” sake (straight out of the spigot) is known as “genshu”. Finally, irrespective of legal requirements, the strongest I have tried (at a brewery) was about 24.1% ABV.
