In Los Angeles a number of places that don't have a hard liquor license but have a beer and wine license use it for mixed drinks. It's also harsher than vodka and have seen people who chug tequila choke on a single shot of this drink.

Even the bar tenders would join in since it was after the other customers left and they were closing out the register (my friends were DJ's there. It also has a much nastier taste and hits you much quicker/harder than actual hard liquor. Most westerners can't handle it straight.
