Used to work in the tower, flight briefing and runway control/met office 1976 to 1982, got some scanned slides taken in the tower and lots of aircraft on the old and new airfield including the USAF Galaxy someone mentioned in the comments. The vertical ladder was always there and used when the lift wasn't working although most of us preferred to use the outside staircase!
I flew from the old airport a few times as a kid and in my teens, and this brought back some memories! I'd completely forgotten about the circular staircase, but the memory came back the instant I saw it! Thanks for that one.
Evening George. A brilliant video and much appreciation to the team for allowing you to film inside. Thank you for the shot of Mossley Hill Church too.
Great Video George, I never knew about the Oasis picture ... I am very surprised that the hotel have not used that part of the control tower. Overall a "Wowser Video"
Great video George. I remember going the airport when I was a kid to see the US Air Force Galaxy Transport Plane that landed there in the early 80's. It was absolutely massive!!
That was great, never thought that would be possible to film there, so indeed a big thank you to the maintenance team for letting you see inside. It is such an iconic tower and that Beatles connection is hopefully something the Hotel could explore in creating perhaps some kind of photo exhibit or statues of the Beatles on that day in 64. It is well worth bringing that history back and could help with some tourism to the area.
honestly a nice change for a piece of local history to survive and not be demolished, good on the team for letting you look around! as a kid i often wondered about it too, so was happy to see this video...good work!
Great video, George. I used to work in the new airport years ago. The old terminal area was apparently haunted with tales of an air hostess and also I think the hanger was used as a temporary hospital during ww2 and many men died in there. That was the talk when I worked there and there were lots of strange reports concerning the old terminal that often resulted in full security checks. Nobody liked going over there of a night.
Hi George, great video. l always wondered what the tower was like inside. l always thought it was a hotel bedroom, but there you go wrong again,l would love to go up there. I'm glad you did 👍
George, this knocked it out of the park . Absolutely brilliant, I have lost count of how many times i have wonder what it was like in the place .An overnight stay exploring would be fantastic. I bet their are lots of nooks and crannies ? Any chance of a re- visit ? I was glued to this , I hope that chaps stone can be cleared, Your best video far 💯 That tunnel maybe clear of water during the summer months ?
Wow. George, you surpassed yourself with this stream. Like you, i have always wanted to go up the original atc tower. I was blown away with this stream. Maybe next on your list could be atc tower or the duck decoy.
Firstly, I think this is one of your best videos yet and that aircraft logbook detailing the maintenance on the old plane on the apron, is amazing! Secondly, unless there is something structually wrong with the tower, I don't understand why the hotel chain hasn't converted the tower in to a deluxe suite? Thirdly, my junior school had a day trip to Speke Airport and I absolutely loved it. The Art Deco architecture is something the likes we will never see again. So much character even now, unlike the boring drab John Lennon one. Can't wait for the tunnel exploration, but can you have a word with the maintenance team to have that memorial cleared and cleaned up!
What a fantastic landmark in Liverpool I am that old now I can remember the vicars vicounts lined up ready for servicing I remember my dad telling me he had a job there just after the war there was a Indian there from USA? nicknamed RED who test flew the mustangs one day he took off and ended up in the mersey.
@@chriskeller4563 thanks for watching chris there will deffo be a video on the full tunnel explore Amazing building indeed credit to the hotel staff here
Great video, George. The things we didn't know until you showed us. I think you're brave going down that seemingly never ending tunnel. I'd be having panic attacks from claustrophobia if it was me!! Thanks for all your videos, always interesting. 👏🏼👏🏼
Boss place this isnt it didnt realise how big this hotel/airport was underneath it looked like a hospital in some parts Thanks for watching matey glad you enjoyed it
You mentioned the veiw the controllers would have had in 1986 when the airport closed. When I joined St John Almond in 1984 there was still a B&Q right next to the school by the Annexes. It closed down and moved when I was in 2nd year and became the first shop at Speke retail. It remained the only shop there for a couple of years so I think that would have been the only shop that was there at that time.
@@tomwilson88 first ive heard of that one tom possible an unofficial one How good would it be to have this as a suite id deffo be staying here imagine the scene at night up there Thanks for watching btw
