This video both crushes my soul but equally soothes it at the same time. The reason that it crushes my soul is that I know exactly how those owners feel about their vehicles. With the fact that they are willing to spend that much money goes to show that those VW's belong to people who see them as part of their life and not just something which can take them from A-to-B and are easily replaceable. So it crushes me that they are put into a position where they are somewhat forced to pay big money bills for no real fault of their own. Although it does sooth my soul knowing that there are car/van owners out there that are willing to put money into their pride and joy to keep it going rather than taking the easy route and joining this throw away society that we seem to live it. 😃 But also that companies like Darkside that will go above and beyond to keep this vehicles on the road. Buying them out of warranty/more than 4 years old and get ready to have your wallet on quick release. Long life oil is a scam too.
Former Tiguan owner
Genuine Q: if reconditioned Turbos are ok, why not a reconditioned engine? Or is it the case the CFCA engines are usually that knackered when they go that they can’t be reconditioned?
VW Warranty!
Try and buy one of that age for 13k. The maths still works.
Belle vidéo 👍 😉
Why don’t people put a PD 150 in the van trouble free
Some do 👍
Trouble free pd150. Tell that to the rounded cams
@@Cous1nJackChanging a TDI camshaft and followers is a quick and easy job IMO. Be sure to use the Darkside reusable injector rocker arm bolts, and torque them exactly (44 Nm). (You can identify that these bolts are fitted by the fact they have hex heads rather than splined ones). All good! 🙂
Thanks for this video , everyone thinks these vans are reliable ? But in my experience “they’re not”
I’ve got a t6 204 bhp auto 2018 model with 90 k on the clock . I’ve spent £7500 in the last year on oil leaks both sides of the engine , power steering pump the list goes on ! Great van to drive but is it worth it ?? Would I be better getting rid ??
That's up to you!
Looking at the video, you could spend all that and then have an engine failure. It freaks me out when you can be only moments away from a 10-15k bill.
I prefer older stuff for this reason, at least if you get a bill of this magnitude you can choose to scrap it or sell it for bits.
Same with any of the RS model Audis etc.
But I’m fine driving older crusty stuff 😁
@@laurieproctor3572 you’re wise ! I think I’m going back to a old crusty Toyota Hi ace ! I paid £2,500 for my last one owned it for 5 Years with 246k miles and not one thing ever went wrong , then sold it for £2.300 🤔 I think it’s all new vans with dpf systems on are crap and they will all fail ! The cost of a repair is now the same price as a old van ! The maths don’t work to buy new and newer van!
@ 100% agreed Paul, I’ve had the same 2 vehicles. The old dog that Keeps on giving and the new shiny toy that seems to be an absolute pig. Even though you do your due diligence and try and pick a safe bet! My only conclusion is simplicity is key. And plenty of space in the engine bay to work around stuff!
I hate dpf and all modern eco systems. 95% of issues are see in modern vehicles are related to these.
Is the 1.6tdi DDYA engine any good 2017 for the transporter
Do they even make that?
So are you fitting the same engine code/ model ie CFCA or a different model?
Same engine with latest revision EGR cooler to eliminate the issue.
I replaced my egr with the pirberg unit bought from yourselfs. I changed it before i had any problems and i still dont, but am i just buying time or should i blank it off to be safe?@DarksideDevelopments
Are you able to do work on a crafter? 2014.
Of course!
I think it is an intentional flaw by VW.
What risks does my T6 TSi camper hold in it's future ? The petrols are reliable right ?
Slight risk to the bank account with the fuel bills 😂
You dont mention What do you think killed these engines.. is it as i suspect its lack of regular maintenance??? (Basics of oil, filters (air, fuel and oil) or is it that they are used as daily drivers and bot getting a good daily run.. (esp Diesels)..
Look at the other video regarding the CFCA, It's the EGR cooler passing aluminium particles in to the cylinders.
Great advert for the reliability of Transporter TDI engines!!! NOT.
The engine isn't the issue, it's the EGR cooler. The same base engine is used accross many Volkswagen platform vehicles and well easily achieve 200k +
Just about to hit 200k on my van and the EGR cooler has only just come as an issue with it blocking up. After 6 years of ownership (second owner) this has been the most reliable car I've ever owned.
@@StickyBaldieAdrian it depends how you use it. Some people daily a 204 bus just for the school run and wonder why they get issues.
Wouldn’t your oil cooler “ revision” invalidate VW’s warranty? So why bother with the rest of the TPI that comes with the engine fitment?
takes 1hr to remove it.
@ remove what?
Change oil on 10000 km and it will work and by normal one turbo engine
Can get 2 engines fitted for that money and still have spare change to fill up on any ford transit lol
but you will need 3 or 4!
@DarksideDevelopments have 1 older and more miles, way more on original running gear dpf and egr only serviced parts
In Australia, CFCA engine currently have my EGR cooler with insufficient flow. Going to get it replaced and blanked off. Computer remap to solve warning light. Can the DPG filter remain working as normal or should it be removed as well?
The DPF is likely to block if EGR is removed and there are faults preventing regen, we wouldn't advise removing as this is illegal.
@@DarksideDevelopments thanks for the advice, there is a good chance I will be ordering some of your stuff to ship here if I can't find it locally.
Totally understand legality of removing emissions equipment.
anyone who spends 2k on a dpf instead of gutting it and doing a delete and map smokes crack, any mechanic who doesn’t recommend dpf gut and delete is a thief.
Have a nice day. This is a 3k job
There is no VW warranty if you don't replace the DPF and getting an MOT with one removed is almost impossible nowadays. Send us your details and we will send you £3000 every time you rebuild one for us!
lol, a dpf can be gutted and it won’t be obvious. Emissions tests are fine with the dpf empty. As far as the warranty is concerned who cares, it doesn’t make up for the 13k dent.
I've got this engine in a T5.1 t32 59900 miles,,,,,,,should I start worrying ?😕😕😢
No ….if it’s got regular oil change and been service well,, mines got 157000 on still going strong not burning oil 2013 model 2 Lr. transporters will easily do 200,000 without major issues. change your water pump timing belt approximately 40,000 miles
@@mickrobo6073unsaid 400000 two comments ago
@@mickrobo6073 thanks for your input, I do have it serviced and oil changed regularly so hopefully you're right
@@rogerwoods1351 my pleasure you research mate loads on UA-cam on transporters doing good big miles !…ok with regular oil change about every 10,000 mile don’t listen to the negativity on here. ,, if you listen to the end ! of the video he actually says this should be okay for at least another 200,000 mile ? so what does that suggest? ..
It previously had bad service on its engine .,?VW transporters got a big following ,,good engines that’s why they hold the price well ,,lotta jealous Ford transit owners. with the wet belt 😂lol.
@@mickrobo6073 I'll keep up the servicing and oil changes , hope to get those big miles out of it as was the case with my t5
Hi Guys i have a 2022 204 dsg highline lwb FWD, ive had it since new and have serviced it 3 times in 30,000 miles .what can i do now to prevent this from happening. I have no intention of selling our van service it every 10,000 miles regardless. I dont use it for short journeys only trips of over 100 miles or more. I only use shell fuel but only occasionally use V power. Is it worth using it more regularly.
You don't need to worry about this particular issue as it's specific to CFCA engine code. That said I'm sure there will be some problems that start to show over time, avoiding the longlife service intervals helps!
Not great and wait for new transporter, wet belt joy, our caddy had to have new mass flywheel at 40k, with these costs the ID Buzz is looking a good option and even new one with twin motors and the only real issues battery pack but 1000's of id cars with 77kw battery packs and should be available on used market.
Electric, errrrh.
As well as my ice vehicles, I also have an 8 3/4 year old EV. 42% degradation now after only circa 40 k miles. Never again ! All batteries degrade with time and use cycles, all.
So the old T5 2.5 weren"t that bad after all have a 174 with a remap still going strong at 600 000km
Great engines if they're well maintained 👍
Are the costs similar for the CXEB?
Similar work involved but the base engine is slightly more expensive.
No wonder in Australia why these are a rare sight and at only a 150000 kilometres when you need to replace at the cost of £13000 and convert that into Australia dollars these are Avery expensive propersition and l can understand why the biggest selling van by far is the Toyota Hiace and now Australia Post are using Toyota Hiaces and they are replacing the Renault vans although there are Kia and Hyundai vans available but the Hiace outsells any other van in Australia and Toyota's out sell any other car brand and that not for a couple of years fot the past 25 years and there the only other car brand that can take number one spot is Mazda but there are very few Mazda vans driving around and there are more Hiluxes driving around than the BT50 and Amy were in Australia you are never to far from a Toyota and that includes me because l own a 1997 Toyota Hilux that has done only 439000 kilometres
Did the new engine come with the new EGR/cooler assembly ?
Yes, comes with the revision D cooler
@
That ain’t a bad deal really for the engine is it? I’ve messed up here. Already done oversized pistons and bearings etc. now realised the valves and guides are worn🫣. Trying to find a solution that’s not a Chinese head replacement!
All worth it to rock some Bola alloys and a VeeDubzzz sticker
yeah that biturbo engine is shockingly bad
Is there any similarities with this engine and the DAVA in my TGE?
It's the EGR cooler thats the main issue on these and it was only ever installed on the CFCA engine code.
What actually fails to use that much oil, rings?
the bores are oversized due to the aluminium oxide contamination.
These Transporters seem to be as bad as the JLR ingenium model ranges!
This particular EGR issue was up there with the best of them.
Isn’t that what we buy any car is for??
A lot of people bought these during COVID when every man and his dog went campervan crazy and camper conversion businesses were popping up every day! And back then the prices were ridiculous like £30/£40k for a converted builders van! If you typed that reg plate into we buy any car they would price it as an old builders van and if you had finance on it you would be paying them to take it off your hands!
.. a lot of VW transporter haters on hear ,,some people who don’t know what they’re on about,! it’s not uncommon for vw transporters to do 20000 miles with no main major problems..vw there known to do to 400000 miles... The key is frequent oil changes .and make sure it’s got a good service history beforehand…. I’ve got a VW T5.1,20ltr,, .2013 with 157000 miles on the clock doesn’t burn or drop oil ,dry underneath no oil spills on the driveway..?
😂😂😂😂 400 thousand miles .... Your dreaming I have had 4 transporters ..and the last 2 were a nightmare ...
We have seen a lot of 1.9 and 2.5PD's with high miles!
@@markwhelan3379no I’m serious. With regular oil change ..Do you research,, what have u you got now? A ford ?? An that would be a nightmare.
How do u know if your van has that engine
Thanks
Check the engine code on the cambelt cover.
Sweet
why replace a crap engine with the same crap engine? why not go for the 150hp single turbo
Coz if you fix the EGR issue the problem goes away even better add an extra oil cooler and the thing will last fine. 150 single Turbo in a T6 is pretty lame.
@@jabberwockytdi8901 rather you than me mate. lot more than the EGR at fault, check the darkside video slating them as the worst engine vw have produced
Why not rebuild the engine instead?
They don’t want to do it they did one and said never again
It's possible but most owners want the VW warranty.
Holy sh1t!!!! Have you had to do anything with the T6.1 biTurbo, or is it a different engine???? Asking for a friend…… 🤦♂️
The 2017 models had a piston ring issue, we've already had a few CXEB engine swaps through the workshop.
Be cheaper to do RS3 conversion 😅
I doubt that but it wont be double!
So what you’re saying is buy a Ford Transit ?
Thats exactly what the new Transporter is, we'll soon find out how reliable they are 😂
Would it not be worth rebuilding these engines?
It's an option but many owners want the Volkswagen warranty
@@DarksideDevelopments Out of curiousity, how much would the price difference be? I'd expect if your dpf is fine this would be a viable option.
We did one and it was about £1500 cheaper in the end and we had a few days waiting for parts to come back so its not worth the aggro.
@@DarksideDevelopments Yea for that difference it wouldn't be worth the hassle.
I wouldnt bother the fixing it
May as well do a GTD conversion if youre going in with that amount of money. jesus wept
How much is a tesla conversion?
Lots of money and you must hand in your testicles.
Transporter HQ started one, not seen an update for a while though.
Ive seen one done tesla_ transporter
Buy a T5

Too much in it to sell for scrap🥴😆
Some good ones some bad ones. Luckily mine falls into former category. 2.5 AXD BNZ, owned since 2008, she's a keeper. When you factor depreciation costs in, that gives me quite a maintenance budget. Better the devil you know for me.
wow wow wow £75.00 per hour labour charges motor trade are just crazy rates and i,m sure the mechanics are on £20 per hour
every repair that goes in to a garage is a fortune and thats not even a wet belt issue

why would you buy a VW after watching this video
Go rent a unit, fill it with gear, pay even minimum wage and see how much you need to charge to make money, £75 is nothing compared to the £130+++ dealer costs!!

£75 an hour is cheap these days for a workshop that actually know's what it's doing.
