"Cat and Mouse Game," a radio play by R.D. Wingfield, unfolds a thrilling narrative centered on the mysterious disappearance of a wealthy woman. The plot implicates her husband as the prime suspect. However, the investigation itself becomes a suspenseful affair, as authority figures clash and secrets unravel.
The story is driven by compelling performances, particularly from Hugh Burden, who plays Robinson, and Michael Kilgarriff, as John Crampton. Other notable characters include Gerry Landers, played by Jill Shilling, and Arnold, portrayed by Wilfrid Carter. The narrative arc is intensively filled with tense dialogue and confrontations, as exemplified by a moment when Robinson confronts a blunt inspector who has intruded rudely into his space.
Wingfield, best known for his "Inspector Frost" novels and series starring David Jason, crafted "Cat and Mouse Game" as one of his many clever radio plays. His radio dramas are characterized by sharp dialogue, meticulous character development, and unexpected plot twists. In "Cat and Mouse Game," Wingfield utilizes his knack for creating intricate mysteries to keep the audience guessing till the very end.
The radio play was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 1971 and was produced by David H. Godfrey. This production remains an engaging example of Wingfield's ability to craft taut, thrilling stories for radio.

Second time round with this. Oh you naughty inspector Robinson 😂
Enjoyed a lot. Cant fail to remind u of columbo, though preceeds it by decades
I listened to this ages ago, this is my second time, and I still enjoyed it immensely. Thank you.
Good story, a surprising plot twist, excellent narration and sound quality, thank you,
Thanks for listening
Did RDW work in a bank? Every play so far involves a bank manager and head office!! I do like his work - not too many characters, easy to know who's who. Some of these other old plays, everyone posh sounds the same!
Good play. Thank you. Not sure why politics in comments. 😢
So this is where they got Columbo from
Oh! Nice to know!
That's what I thought. The detective has some of the techniques of Columbo. However, this detective is much more flirty than Columbo. BTW, we had friends who were friends with Peter Faulk's parents. He really was a nice guy. @@VickiNikolaidis
I had the same thought.
Totally!
No, Colombo is based on "Crime and punishment", the structure of a crime we know all about, then the criminal gradually reveals themselves to the detective; driven by growing guilt.
Excellent! Great story, great narration!
Brilliant wish it were longer
Thank you so much

Yeh I.R. has lovely shades of Frost and Alistair Sims)
The voice over at the end was unnecessary, but turn off sharply when the play ends.
