    My trumpet moutpiece fits in my flugel and plays ok on it. Got no comments in brass band. I think the church does all the blending in this case, lol. So mine has the big taper?

      If a regular B flat trumpet mouthpiece fits, yes that's the big size.

    You can also buy an adapter which will allow you to use any trumpet mouthpiece on a flugelhorn.

      It's the opposite. There are adapters for using flugel mouthpieces in a trumpet.

    how do you figure out what the taper is

      Try a regular B flat trumpet mouthpiece. If that doesn't fit, then try a cornet mouthpiece. If that doesn't fit, then you have a French taper.

      my only guess is local production or playing differences- like different shank sizes on low brass.
