Cause auction prices are coming down on books, people think they will continue to come down forever and when prices are rising, people think they will rise forever, people do the same thing with stocks. Nothing rises or falls forever
The first silver age appearances of Batman villains sold very well in the recent Heritage auction for the Greenwich collection (e.g. batman 189 in 9.2 sold for a record 5.5k)
I have FF 48 in 5.5 CGC and FF49 in 7.5 CGC. Keeping for the long haul. 💪 I am trying to save for a major key this December…best time to buy if you can save for it since no one buys during Christmas 😅
Nice comparisons. My major key to purchase is Hulk #1, but its continuing rise is only making it increasingly harder to get. It's like chasing a rainbow. 😢😂
Comic books have peaks and valleys, just like every other investment, including stocks. I agree that if you're willing to buy a Marvel key and you're willing to keep it for 10 yrs. or more, you will make money. The comic boom was an aberration. It may take a while longer if you bought during the boom, but you'll still make money if you're in it for the long run.
I love this style of video. Thanks for showing the data with the keys. I think strange tales 110 is highly undervalued for a first appearance of Dr strange and the trilogy of MCU movies. Scarce book in high grade especially Hulk is rare too
The best way to get at some of these keys is to trade if you can. Then try to get a grade as high as possible. FF 48 is now a great time to by as it has come down significantly, but eventually will go back up as the next generation of buyer comes of age.
After watching this video, I see that these books are way overpriced. They need to come back down to reality. These prices are still overinflated. These books have gone parabolic and now need to come way down.
The Covid lockdowns sent all of these books prices parabolic. Now its time to come back down to reality. The market is still way too high. I am going to sit on the sidelines and wait for a massive correction back to pre Covid prices.
Stocks produce dividends, so not only do you get paid for owning the stock, the stocks' value also rises. Comic prices rise but you don't get paid every month or every quarter by simply owning the book.
Another excellent vid Laurence. I collect Marvel, because I love them. I got hooked watching the tv cartoons in ‘66. I am not buying for investment. Latest acquisition was an FF #27 in 7.0 for $195. Just filling in holes I should have filled decades ago. Love you, your insight, and love this hobby.
Agree that Laurence makes excellent videos with great content. Old silver age kid here as well, and filling holes in my old Marvel collection as well. As Laurence stated, timing is everything. I have one more hole to fill in my FF collection (FF#18), then I will have from 15 to 101 (all the Kirby's). My dilemma is, is it worth trying to fill in under #15 due to cost, especially for FF #1? Same with my ASM collection. I have all the Ditko's from #3 on, but I don't know if I can ever get the 2 major grails prior to that, so is it worth it? My fear is that young people (I am a recently retired middle school art teacher - thanks to the influence of Marvel artists on me as a kid), no longer read comics, as they are totally into MANGA or tech content, and are only exposed to the Marvel movies. Will the value of these books carry over into the upcoming generations if there is no interest by those generations?
@@MtHockey Unless you have tons of surplus money, I wouldn't pay the high costs for those early SA that you need. The investment is just too speculative.
I have to agree with you. However, these are books that I have dreamed of having since I was a middle school kid in the 60's, but the reality is that they are now the toys of the rich, or those who were fortunate enough to get them at the right place and time. Sometimes we have to learn to be happy with what we have!
@@MtHockey Yes indeed, but as the saying goes, when a collection stops growing, it's no longer a collection; it's a mausoleum. Personally, the high prices put on certain major keys actually helps me, as I might spend a couple of thousand irresponsibly, but no amount of nostalgia will convince me to pay tens of thousands on a single comic!
I think you gave a lot of very good examples, but let’s be real if you hold anything long enough it’s going up. The house my grandparents bought in the 60s for $20,000 is worth 350,000 at this point. It’s called inflation. If you have an old Edsel That was purchased for a couple thousand dollars today it too, would be worth lots of money even though it was the garbage car of a generation. But for those of us who love our comic books, I happen to agree the Comics I to be collected and not flipped, hold them long enough and even that 90s X-Men number one might be worth something? OK maybe about that book
There are a lot of silver age books sitting on ebay going nowhere. Silver Age on it's own is not a good investment. You have to have a good silver age. Scarcity + desirability = collectibility. You can buy silver age lots of $100-200 right now. It's a fire sale. Also, alot of these folk don't bother cleaning and pressing their siiver age books. This can add a lot of value.
I bought during the lull in 2011/12 Af 15 for 2500-3000 raw copies to X-men mid grade raw for 2,000 so yes they made me a ton of money. Choose the right books and don’t panic these are the back bone books of the silver age.
You sound really confused about the basics of market dynamics and collecting. If people are panic selling, it drives down prices which means you'd be able to buy more comics at cheaper prices. If you actually believe in the long term market, then that would be an opportunity but you're telling people NOT to sell. Telling people not to sell comics means you're not actually buying comics, which means you really don't think they're great a investment. The cherry picked data you're reading doesn't actually have any predictive value.
It depends what side of the fence u are on. Take a broad look at where prices were to where they are now. And 20 to 30 years down the line I expect them to be higher. If u buy and plan to sell in less than 10 years it won’t be worth while. The reason why I say don’t sell is bc there has been a massive influx of books for sale which drives down prices. Not all comics should be bought. In fact most shouldn’t if youre worried about money. There are only a handful. If you’re a short term buyer don’t buy. If you’re a 20 plus year buyer then by all means. Thanks for watching

Hulk 1 in a 1.8 has an average annual increase in appreciation of $680 for the last 20 years.
That's a tough pill to swallow because that's been the major key I've chased for years, and it only gets tougher and further from my reach 😥

Too many are impatient or don’t love the characters they buy and that usually tends to be the reason they sell early
