For the Michigan to work today, it has to be unexpected. Such situations are exceedingly rare now because both the players and goalies have learned to recognize the preparation for it. Michkov's best Michigan came against the Swedish national team when the puck was hopping behind the net, he picked it up on the fly and swung it into the net in one smooth swoop. That was opportunistic and therefore completely unexpected, no one on the ice realized what had happened for a good few seconds. But when you start fiddling with the puck trying to lift it off the ice, you've given away your intentions.
Nothing can ever go right in Minnesota. I knew when we started this well it would all fall apart. And now our best defensemen this season is injured as well as basically the rest of our team.
I mean it's been the same thing all year for the Wild, one more injury and it's downhill in a hurry. We can deal with a few injuries but 2 out of our top 4 defensemen AND forwards, it's just not possible
I’m actually down the middle when it comes to michkov. It’s good to go for the Michigan every once in a while to keep the opposing side guessing, but with that, he can use the pressure to either make a pass or just go for it. Tldr michkov and torts are right in my opinion
Glad Nazar is being given a chance. That's a good call up, for Chicago has a great AHL team. Better than recalling Tinordi who can't do anything except huge dirty hits like dealing a close to death blow to Dach last year as he was continuing on his great second half of 22-23 whic had him finish third in the Habs stats with just 58 games played (was injured twice during that season and it showed, just like when Monahan went down a month later and almost everyone else (that record in games missed to injury is doubtfully ever going to be beaten), 2 pts in 2 games and Tinordi after sending Dach flying into his ex bench, tearing his MCL + ACL might have caused him to fall into a Drouin situation was sent back to the AHL week later, for some reason he was part of the regular roster when better options were available in the AHL. Sorry for the ranting, after that blowout yesterday I'm firing on all cylinders, and it sucks because I don't want to be too harsh on the Pens, they're my second fav team. Nazar has been rotting in the AHL for long time despite his 1st round pick results so far, hope it helps the Hawks, I hate to see Bedard feeling like he's playing alone. Maybe pairing him with Hall would help too, he's not what I'd consider a guy that's "done" he's in his early 30's, not 38, yet he's treated as if he was completely washed up in the Windy City. I'd take him with the Habs anytime if they don't like him 🤣
If they want to get rid of diving, just call it but don’t call the penalty that caused the dive. Going on the PK would be a bigger deterrent than a pocket change fine.
No, not calling the original penalty is a bad idea. However there is no reason that the dive can't be called and then make it a double minor with an additional two tacked on for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Perhaps the Bruins should consider claiming Oliver Wahlstrom. He's on a one-year contract for $1 million, after which he'll be an RFA. Plus, he's a New Englander.
If not for Talbot that game might've been a blowout for Philly. As for Michkov, I think he should avoid the Michigan at least for a while because he's known for trying it a lot, and that gives the other team an advantage.
Obviously Middsy being out in addition to Zucc Ek and Brodin is gonna make it even tougher for us, but injuries happen to everyone, and if we're serious about being contenders, we still gotta keep getting points. I'm almost more concerned about Gus having two bad games in a row than I am about Middleton being on IR.
How many times has that Mich. play started as a 'high stick' as it's swung up and over the net and G's shoulder? Of course it has to be 'below the crossbar' by the time it is put in, but... I've seen it above the bar as the play evolves; if the puck hasn't left the player's stick, isn't this still high-sticking illegal goal / stoppage of play? 🤔
THG,these draft picks of Chicago, three years ago the powers that be,made numerous statements of all the great, can’t miss drat picks, here in Chicago we are still waiting !
Most players who aren't picked very highly take 3+ years to develop and break into the NHL. Defensemen can take even longer Not every pick is going to hit of course, but that's why you accumulate as many as you can during a rebuild.
I think there is value in being able to threaten the Michigan. Maybe it's easy to defend, but having more weapons in a given position means the defense has more to think about. A goalie hugging the post expecting a Michigan might leave himself more open to a cross crease pass for example.
If the goalie is defending against the Michigan that could leave other spots open, which I think is the biggest value of the Michigan. Use the threat of it to pass to a teammate on the other post. It should be open. Or just throw it at the goalie's feet and hope for a deflection or rebound. Since he has to stand to guard the post there might be more open space at the bottom.
I’ve watched all but 2 games for the flyers this season but Michkov has done the Michigan I think like 4 times total in games. I think torts is exaggerating slightly by saying every time but I also do agree with him I think he should only do it in very select circumstances like on a powerplay where no defender is within 1 or 2 seconds of closing out on him
Being predictable is never a good thing. If you are, you have to be *really* good to pull off whatever you're doing. Like Ovie scoring from his "office". Everyone knows he's gonna shoot, but he still scores.
They could force it, but all the injured dmen are LHD and Jiricek is a righty. The calling up of Crotty and claiming Dermott makes me think they won’t.
Norris is one guy who shouldn't be diving. The way he gets hurt he shouldn't be falling on the ice unless he's really knocked down or he might hurt himself.
bummer is that a Windsor spit did that 'Michigan' goal a few days prior. It was a cool, cheap ripoff from the Detroit news and channel 9 out of Windsor. Should be a 'Spits goal'
I don't understand how coaches like Tortorella can get away with such narrow-mindedness and use "respect for the game" as a cover to hide their own lack of ownership for their players' lack of development/the team's results. Torts should've ENCOURAGED Michkov to continue trying the Michigan, while he and his assistants draw up ways to make the most of the super rookie's skills. Goalies are on their knees so often that even cursory defensive presence might not be enough to actually stop a properly executed Michigan.
The Michigan. Michkov will probably succeed one day. But as you mentioned most goalies and defensemen are now looking for it especially with the younger players and it seems most have figured it out. I am OK with it if there is nothing to lose by it. However Torts is correct. There are better plays from behind the net.
True. My thought was more about how much of a reputation they have to build before they are actually fined. Before they even warn, they must have loads of reports or examples of getting too good at drawing calls.
The Islanders continue to fail their prospects with poor development. The two Lamoriellos have guaranteed this franchise will toil in mediocrity for years.
Wahlstrom was, what, a 14th pick? Guys are hit or miss around that spot. It was a good try but I wouldn't blame the Islanders for that pick. They got Dobson out of that draft so 1 out of 2 is about what you can expect at that point.
Gretzky made an entire career’s worth of highlights, points and defensemen angry by being creative behind the net. The “Michigan” should just be one option, not the must do for players today. Turns hockey into basketball…boring and predictable.
I don’t like the Michigan because it is a gimmick. I really want a bunch of players who are obsessed with it to get burned by it repeatedly, having the other team take it from them and score. Even better if they’re GWGs. Embarrassing them is the only way to stop the showboaters since I guess they all want to be tik tok famous.
Talbot tweaked his back carrying the whole team on it against Philly. He played amazing.
Exactly what I was thinking 😢
😂😂for your comment but 😢😢for Talbot. Didn't he get hurt during a recent game against Vancouver? Hope he's back soon from this injury.
@@pwc1021He returned last night against Philly. He stopped 32 out of 34, for .941.

Guerin played for Edmonton though so he’s probably friendly with the organization
Wild down 4 of their top 6 players. Getting to feel like last year with all the injuries. Middleton was leading the league in + -. :(
Let Michkov be Michkov. He’s learning and bringing some excitement to the team and league. Torts will be fine
If they want to get rid of diving, just call it but don’t call the penalty that caused the dive. Going on the PK would be a bigger deterrent than a pocket change fine.
