I remember when it became popular in the States in the mid-'90s. I was in elementary school at the time. We did hear about the controversy... but darn it, the song was just so dang catchy we didn't care 😅
Slight exaggeration for the sake of comedy 😅, but I do remember when they were having us dance to the Macarena in music class back when I was in elementary school in the mid-'90s (our music teacher was trying to submit it to _Funniest Home Videos_ )... but there was controversy even at the time about having us dance to a song with such suggestive lyrics. But I think the language barrier made it a non-issue for a lot of folks 😅
Just realized now that Squidward is now the second Spongebob character who has appeared in this series, the first being Spongebob himself. Wonder when Patrick is gonna show up, lol
