I buy my own bars, canvas, and primer and stretch my own.. they end up being less than half the price of the hobby lobby canvases. But im also using 1.5x1.5in. bars.. SunbeltMFG for bars, and Dickblick for canvas rolls and golden brand gessos.
I think cardboard is good for practice painting, the problem is that it's not archival. So overtime it might yellow and your paint might change colors. Also, cardboard warps. But it is good for practice and free if you can reuse shipping boxes. One thing I found fun with cardboard was to use it to apply the paint to my canvases when making abstracts. It makes interesting textures :)

Stretching your own canvas is lots of work, my hands can't do it since I have tendinitis
I have started using cardboard to paint with. It works pretty good and gives me an excuse to be a box hoarder. 😄
