Just a little addendum: instant fails at the end are caused by a checksum fail, where the amount of objects with hitbursts (either hit or miss) and the amount of objects in the map don't match. The exact mechanics behind this aren't still 100% known, but for 2B maps, it seems to have something to do with overlapping objects further in time unloading the overlapping objects previously in time (which can be seen in the editor as they just straight up disappear.) In this map, the objects that auto is ignoring don't give hitbursts, which seems to mean that they're being unloaded before they even load properly. I can't even begin to guess why that's happening besides something to do with 0bpm sliders. Amazing video, I love weird physics in the game being explored, and as much as I've messed around with them myself I've never even seen half the stuff in this video.
Millhiore F thanks for explaining a bit more. to be honest, i expected to feel like I really understood how osu! runs maps in this video, but instead I felt more confused
The real question is how he set the UA-cam video to 0 bpm. He should make a video about it someday, if no one else can figure it out. *When you realize you're 9 months late to comment*
I like how I never played Osu! or seen videos for Osu! But when it started to become a technical and educational video, I just got hooked into this video. Great video btw.

This is super interesting. I haven't created my own beatmap before so I didn't think you could screw with it this much. Thank you for enlightening me and also making math fun, somehow!
Very interresting content!! I was also wondering this the other day and ended up searching it ^^. Thanks for answering a question that I was just wondering randomly haha :p
I've had this video stapled to my recommended tab since last month. Finally clicked it out of complete annoyance (thank you UA-cam). TL;DW : When you break things, they no longer function.
Never actually realized this video talked about it, but I remember coming across having to hover on my tablet on Monstratas aspire entry some years back, never knew what it was about. I assumed it was because of the "play warning" icons showing up (basically a break in the middle of a pattern)
DT does changes things. It makes the BPM faster. V: Okay. But for example, if osu! needs at least 0.012 bpm to be able to at least be playable, and the map is only 0.08 bpm, then if you put DT, you'll get 0.0014 bpm and then vola, it's playable with only DT. V:
DT changes the in-game timer (from 0 milliseconds to whatever the length is in milliseconds) to run at 1.5x speed. it doesn't change the stats of the map at all. Which means that the BPM wouldn't change and the map is still unplayable.
double goes to inf a little under 1.8E+308, so a lot of programs manually put code in to overflow at 1E+300 apparently and if the other were an int you wouldn't need anywhere close to 6e+298; anything above 60000 would work
great work documenting all of this! i just wanted to add some random thoughts here, as i've seen a few weird but similar effects in some taiko maps. i've seen a slider at the end of a map causing similar things with being unable to see current combo or dim the background, but in this example the mapper didn't use 0bpm explicitly, they used this line in the .osu file for the object: 256,160,111807,2,0,L|0:0,1,NaN notice the NaN for what i believe is something to do with slider length, the slider shows on editor but is invisible, and being the final object in the map, causes the same effects you showed in the video. map link: osu.ppy.sh/b/964786 the next map, i don't particularly understand, but it has some effects where you can't hit a single note for the first minute of the map or so. interestingly, autoplay tries to hit notes but has 0 score and accuracy. i really have no idea what's happening in the editor with this one, but i do see some green lines with strange bpm changes. again, the ending of the map has this slider: 256,192,189809,6,0,L|256:144,1,NaN and this again causes the game to think it's always in a break so you can't dim background or see your current combo. i believe this map completely breaks in multiplayer and ends immediately as well. map link: osu.ppy.sh/b/940782 another thing i noticed was that you can't toggle autoplay mid-map in the editor with tab, only at the beginning, which i found odd. but yeah, you can do a lot of these things without explicitly setting 0bpm in the editor, and it's quite interesting sometimes. if you want more examples of the kinds of weird things you can do with the editor for taiko, check out some maps by katacheh such as this one: osu.ppy.sh/b/1233531
I don't play Osu, but I clicked on this video anyway 'cos 0 BPM is kinda weird... Then the \lim shit appeared at 0:53 and I instantly fell in love with you. :)
So this is why your Aspire map seemed unplayable when I tried it. Very creative, actually, I legit didn't know it was possible to force the game to ignore the user's preference. No wonder I loved your Aspire map the most.
What they could have done is when opening game check that file for a reasonable value such as atleast 1 and if it is 0 or negative set the value to a default value or if it's going to infinity do the same.
Not a very good explanation of BPM; I'll do it for you. BPM stands for Beats per Minute, what's a beat? Well, first off you'll have to know about time signatures. Time Signatures are the baseline structure of how a piece of music plays, typical dance/house music is 4/4, which is 4 beats per bar; which gives it that thumping 1 2 3 4/1 2 3 4 kick. The Waltz is 3/4, obviously 3 beats per bar and accompanies the Waltz dance, in that 1 2 3/1 2 3 rhythm. After that, you can find how fast the piece is played, I'm very familiar with electronic music so I can hear the BPM. A good guide to measuring the BPM of a piece of house music without a metronome or some DAW is to hear the snare/clap and match it up to seconds. If the snare hits every second, it's 120 BPM. Most tracks are 115/120/123/125 BPM; tracks that are 130+BPM are techno/trance. It is a lot easier to comprehend if you audibly count the beats and once you've done that you can predict when a piece of music will change. For example, you're listening to House Music, the standard formula is 4/4 time and every 4-8 bars an element is added or subtracted. It's a pretty cool thing to learn and one step closer to learning musical theory and play them on instruments.
Omfg right before clicking on this video I was commenting on the diameter and volume of the observable universe in electrons and how it still doesn't come close to a googol, and a few other things!
I do, look, the game has place values, right? When it is set at zero, some place values are changed or not used at all. Imagine you only get circles and you see only squares. You dont know what to do.
The 0BPM is caused by the real beats per minute the computer cannot handle how small it is, like how you can also not add 0.00002029293828828282828484+2923737282828811881818, the computer cannot add numbers or even keep them in processing if they are too big (though there are ways around this blah blah blah im oversimplifying bleh), or too small. Because of this and how osu! calculates sliderbody shapes, the slider body design's length would be divided by 0 causing errors in the code, which the game "fixes" by not loading the sliderbody. The game then uses a "prefetch", where the game loads objects ahead of time to prevent lag, like how you might think of your presentation ahead to time to avoid stutters, basically foreplanning. When the game tries to load the slider's length, however, it ends up somehow, due to peppy's bad coding, being treated as having a negative length, meaning it is supposed to be clicked before it appears. This also causes the infamous autofail bug in osu! due to peppy's timing optimizations being so confusion peppy himself has no idea how autofail is caused, all that he knows is that if he removes the optimizations then autofail does not trigger. The break time and other stuff is just a state, a toggle in the code, a switch that was accidentally also triggered as a result of peppy's poor code optimizations, thinks the map is in a break, when no objects are being played. Again, no one, no even the creator peppy himself knows why, but it's due to some stupidly arbitrary and messy code used to make the game run more smoothly.
I've never seen this game really played, though I know what it is, and this is the first video I've ever seen on editing it. I had no interest coming into this. Your personality, though, made me laugh, and made the video actually interesting. I might check out a few more, just because of you. So, thanks!
8:58 So that whole thing did MinG? Most of his maps are full with game-breaking things such as the 100% background dim (it's not really 100%) and the stuck-to-zero-keys. That''s insanely interesting and I've never expected that this could happen because of zero BPM. Interesting video, love to see more.
Aleph-0 but its just a normal map and a different song changed the tempo to 0 bpm and this is from a brand new map (even auto gets deceived too by those no storyboard fake circles)
So....events that occur and can be observed are separated from each by applying a different frame of reference over time. But when you stop time, events can't happen, but they still do happen, not all at the same time, but still at the same time. So that's how black holes work then.......
I have this odd feeling that just having the maps installed into Osu! makes it unstable... I just added them into my library and just by selecting one Osu! crashed. Even better is the maps disappear when I restart lol... UPDATE: Refreshing the maps and restarting the game works
Just a little addendum: instant fails at the end are caused by a checksum fail, where the amount of objects with hitbursts (either hit or miss) and the amount of objects in the map don't match.
The exact mechanics behind this aren't still 100% known, but for 2B maps, it seems to have something to do with overlapping objects further in time unloading the overlapping objects previously in time (which can be seen in the editor as they just straight up disappear.) you cant multiply 0 so it would be the same.
But would it multiply 0 or the things near 0 ?
Because if it's multiply the number near 0 the game may wouldn't consider it as 0 anymore
The number is way too large, it wouldn't change anything.
it would probably still see it as 0, since a 0.0000000000000000(300ish zeroes) times 2 or whatever it multiplies it with wouldn't increase the number.
0 BPM enables osu! 2007 public beta? XD

great work documenting all of this! i just wanted to add some random thoughts here, as i've seen a few weird but similar effects in some taiko maps.
i've seen a slider at the end of a map causing similar things with being unable to see current combo or dim the background, but in this example the mapper didn't use 0bpm explicitly, they used this line in the .osu file for the object:
256,160,111807,2,0,L|0:0,1,NaN
notice the NaN for what i believe is something to do with slider length, the slider shows on editor but is invisible, and being the final object in the map, causes the same effects you showed in the video. map link: osu.ppy.sh/b/964786
the next map, i don't particularly understand, but it has some effects where you can't hit a single note for the first minute of the map or so. interestingly, autoplay tries to hit notes but has 0 score and accuracy. i really have no idea what's happening in the editor with this one, but i do see some green lines with strange bpm changes. again, the ending of the map has this slider:
256,192,189809,6,0,L|256:144,1,NaN
and this again causes the game to think it's always in a break so you can't dim background or see your current combo. i believe this map completely breaks in multiplayer and ends immediately as well. map link: osu.ppy.sh/b/940782
another thing i noticed was that you can't toggle autoplay mid-map in the editor with tab, only at the beginning, which i found odd.

I have this odd feeling that just having the maps installed into Osu! makes it unstable... I just added them into my library and just by selecting one Osu! crashed. Even better is the maps disappear when I restart lol...
UPDATE: Refreshing the maps and restarting the game works
