  • Have you ever tried to paint lava as an OSL (Object Light Source) but ended up with flat colors instead? Or maybe you are starting to paint the scenery objects of Planar Cruise's bundle and wanna learn some new techniques to test up?
So this video is for you!
In this video, Marcia shows you how to paint lava in 4 different ways, so you can paint some volcanos or lava rivers in your game terrains.

one thing that you didn't mention is that . . unlike fire
lava has strongly contrasting contours . . . and a rougher , less defined center
so it's generaly a good idea . . to divide the larger regions into many smaller sections of varying brightness

Awesome techniques. For a gameplay or comic book setup, the first with blended gradients. For realism, I like the pouring technique.

Might i point out that when you look at Lava naturally you almost always get Black flakes on top from the thin top layer cooling. i think thats what this is missing some black shale effect on top

The one going up is wrong. The red should be where there is less heat.
EDIT: Everything else is amazing. Good job

It makes sense because, usually, the lava is resting in a cooler temperature (red). Then, from inside the volcano, comes the splash of hotter lava. In this situation, the lava from inside, going higher, would be the yellow one, while the lava from the border would be the red :)
