- Buy Eurorack and other fine kit from episode sponsors, Signal Sounds: www.signalsoun... // Today we meet Eurorack brand founder, live modular musician and all round wonderful fellow Finlay Shakespeare. His company Future Sound Systems is known for its under-license Eurorack adaptation of the legendary Throbbing Gristle Gristleizer, but he's done a lot of innovative and interesting stuff beyond that, mate. He was selling modules to Analog Haven while he was still in Sixth Form, for heck's sake! And in this long and deep conversation we talk about this, electrocuting yourselves, getting attacked by Dominos delivery drivers, old electro records, (live) music making, and more, and we do many silly voices and impressions. Good teims.

Speciality coffee, a dislocated knee, pot brownies and now an episode of why we bleep with Finlay Shakespeare. What a wonderful morning
Them or you?!!
So, the dislocation is enhancing the morning, or.......
What was in that tea? By the end, you two were minutes from falling out of your chairs laughing at some right nonsense. =D What a good one. Seems like a lovely fella. All these podcasts are bloody great. Cheers for making them happen.
Instablaster.
Ahhhhh lot of love for Finlay.
Excellent! Clearly I'm a lot older, but for me I was playing my Dad's LP of Jarre's Équinoxe over and over (and over) and that started my fascination with synths :) What a nice chap Finlay is.
So I was enjoying the first hour of this conversation while washing the dishes after dinner. I paused it because you guys inspired me to plug in my rig and explore my new Instruo 1047 filter...this was before I saw the part where you played around with the Polivoks. I had pretty much discovered all the unexpected filter qualities on the 1047 (a really beautiful filter BTW) that you ended up explaining when I returned to the conversation. Beautiful stuff. The real funny thing is how we all end up transitioning from simply hearing all this stuff as noise (bleeps!) to suddenly realizing it’s f’ing beautiful. Thank you.
Thanks Michael! Everything becomes music when you listen to it enough, doesn't it 👍🎶
mylarmelodies ... so said John Cage, whom I first encountered many decades ago, but it feels like I’m always rediscovering this once a week these days.
Thank you chaps, most enjoyable. Tried to just listen like a podcast but found I had to watch, it didn't seem polite to ignore that you were in the room somehow. Some great anecdotes there too.
Finlay isn't my favorite synth engineer as in products. But i listened like 4 times to the whole podcast because of his personality. (and the smooth talking between you 2) Mylar and mister Shakespeare is just a great combo.
There's loads to do in Yorkshire. Epic walks in the Dales and loads of rock climbing at Malham, Goredale, Ilkley, Brimham, Slipstones etc. Spent years traveling there from Lancashire. Lived outside Huddersfield in Holmfirth for a year long walks everyday. Great interview as ever great fun too. Love this series. Hope the move isnt too stressful . Take it easy.
Preach! And a good opportunity to do some hardcore field recording too
Cool another favourite of mine too though not done any for ages with my Edirol R-09
Yeah gotta agree, tonnes to do in Yorkshire these days. Leeds, Harrogate and York are great days out. You even have the electronic equivalent of the open mic night in York at the Fulford Arms (the next one is on the 6th Nov, check-out EMOM on facebook). As a Sheffielder who moved away for over 10 years and came back in 2010, I have to say even Sheffield is getting better and has plenty to do and you are no more than an hour away from Manchester, Leeds and York if you do get bored. Also, if your in the mood for top tier DJ's you can always hit Hope Works.... I will just leave that there, as it aint everyones cup of tea paying a fortune for a ticket and then having to use a portaloo in a Nightclub! ;)
Aw so cute, how they randomly segway from rig breakdown into jamsession. best thing ever. (:
The live noodling on this is lovely, cheers!.
I can't count how many time's I've been electrocuted by 240v, don't know how i'm still alive. But honestly i think the worst thing that's happened to me was when i was gonna jump over an electric fence that was for horses and my inner thigh hit the fence, fell right on my face and i limped for the rest of the day.
Great fucking episode
Mylar + Divkid making videos together = Dream Team
My servile comment aside, another good podcast 👍🏻
@mylarmelodies epic episode. On a side note I am Tom Kirton. I did the sound for you at cymru beats when you played live and I was also the person who was playing the cs80 with you at super booth. I crop up everywhere haha
Hah, I remember! And you take a mean instagram clip of said CS-80...see you at the next one I hope 🙌🏻
The Gristleizer VCA is the perfect thing for any filter with crazy resonance. I use it with a couple of Pittsburgh filters I have kicking about and it sounds magical!
Voy a escribir en mi idioma. Tu usa translter...
Mientras trabajo en mi taller, deseando ir al estudio a hacer ruidos, escucho placenteramente tu programa. Es hermoso disfrutar de todas las enseñanzas opiniones y experiencias. Gracias por alegrar mi mañana!!!
absolutely brilliant episode (i watched it all in bed last night and was getting nudged in the ribs constantly because i kept laughing)
lol about the whole electrocution thing. (I shouldn't laugh but I know how it feels)
I managed to electrocute myself when I was 12. (UK 240v) on Christmas day no less :)
i was putting a plug on the new telly that mum and dad had got me (yes kids they didn't even give you a plug back in those days)
nowadays you get a nice moulded thing with a fuse compartment.... no doubt because of incidents like mine :)
anyways. I put the plug on to the wire (i had done this loads of times before) as it was Christmas and i was 12 and i just had a new colour telly in my room i was a little bit excited I got sidetracked by something else.
I forgot to screw the lid on the plug, pushed it into the wall and zapped myself. I've still got a figure 8 shaped scar on the palm of my hand today.
the sorest bit tho was my elbow... (it felt like somebody had gone at my funny bone with a jackhammer)
I've never done that again :)
to my eternal shame I got caught switching a price tag on an electronics kit in a Tandy back the early 80s. Not only that, I was drunk and absconding from school at the time. I was sick outside the shop while we were waiting for the police, and they all took pity on me and let me off..true story 🤪
Legends the both of ya! Great listen :)
God damn it Alex, you and your froggy fuckin Charles Dickens monologue in the beginning of this had me spit my coffee out on my lap at work! 😂😂😂 I’m dyin over here hahaha great vid as always, man!
Welcome back to the Northern Powerhouse! This has to be the most entertaining episode yet. Confession: I did snortle at the Matthew ALM impression. Electrocution is fun/not fun!
that north face jacket tangent is pretty funny to me. living in the pacific northwest of the united states the north face jacket is practically a uniform here. it's deffo a rainy north thing.
MrSharps02 yeah, I’ve worn Northface stuff since I was a kid, my first hiking pack was Northface and I still have it! I’ve also always bought their tents until recently when they started feeling cheaply made vs companies like Hyperlite. I also live in Washington.
Haha "whoaa you know the harmony on this is really fruity" is a line of thought that I definitely can relate to : ) Own music and sketches not exempt. You gotta do what you gotta do.
"Doepfer, never heard of him" ...had me laughing.
So I'm sat by a lake in the New Forest having listened to the whole episode. Thinking I just want to be home fiddling about with my modular and finishing building my DIY Clouds! I think I can also smell body liquor near that overgrown bush...
Your opening voiceover for Signal sounds was brilliant! Pure Olivander from Harry Potter.
Subconscious John Hurt ✅
Hi Alex! It was lovely to meet you at Synthfest and have the opportunity fr a bit of a chat. I'm sorry I have contributed to your current state of vocal gruffness!
Side note: 1,000,000 thanks for letting me know photonicinduction is out there, blowing up coconuts with voltage.
LGR is probably the channel with the IBM unboxing. LxD is the Make Noise low pass gate, or LPG if you want to get another three letter L acronym in there
Yes it's LGR! Absolutely love that channel/his approach
@mylarmelodies Just watched this Marathon! Great video... funny as f**k. You weeing is on YT for posterity! Btw is the old man Terry Riley? He did 'In C'.
1:14 You can do ten times more than that in software and people will still say "it doesn't sound like analog". I'd say "analog doesn't sound like digital"
Love the show any way, interesting talk. Awesome guy.
Dude, you need to seriously consider doing audiobook voiceovers and getting paid for it.
i like these conversation episodes. but I had to compulsively watch this Ironing board in the back ;-)
Hey! There are absolutely people doing the drum kit and modular integration stuff! Check out Don Gero if you haven't, they're wild!
Thanks Alex! You got the goods man!
Every eurorack video on youtube= modular and ikea lamps....! We all spend our pennies where it matters! ;-)
Well, that was a lot of fun.
WWB has overtaken the Adam Buxton podcast (sorry Adam) as my required soldering background noise. I've built many modules whilst listening, the latest of which, the Dual Sallen Filter from Befaco, is proper bonkers.
I wish you had asked Finlay about what those early pitfalls in PCB DFM (Design for Manufacturing) are, as a beginner PCB Designer it would genuinely be great for me to know!
Welcome back to yorkshire, there's plenty of bleep here to keep you company :)
yeyeyeyeyeyeyeye xD
that said: cant wait to try out the gristleizer range of modules, they really seem interesting to me after i've fallen in love with the plague bearer already ;)
Great Fun here!
I ended up buying stuff from signalsounds because Schneider's was out of stock and I only knew about signalsounds thanks to this series of podcasts. So, win for sponsorships?
Well Tuned Piano is by La Monte Young
1:56:06 is fucking sick man. i loved that you guys jammed out some shit. fucking awesome
Jason Talton Told ya, make sure you listen to his Housediet tunes!
did the mushrooms kick in around the time you were talking floppy disks? :-)
what was that electro track you mentioned?
Great film! .Was there just tea in them mugs?
hehe @1:55:02 when mylar decides its time to jam ;) too nice.
You forgot the Yorkshire pudding, chips and gravy! 😂
What is the album you are talking about (comma comma comma), please?
It’s this! www.discogs.com/Der-Zyklus-Der-Zyklus-II/master/126620
1:00:30 I was scrubbing the video looking for info on the TG4 Gristleizer VCA when I heard you whisper that you hate JMJ... Do not let Markus Fuller hear that xD
In dire need of an "Electro is for Lizard People" t-shirt.
William Shakespeare's daughter Susanna lived till like 66 ...
How about Lamont Young as the difficult old man?
This has been one of the most enjoyable "Why we bleep."
Yes!! It was totally La Monte Young!
Fin for president
Haha! “Weird as stuff off”
"What IS oooosb?"
Granpapi Mylar
Bought Untilted when I was 16. Literally only just found out I’ve been saying it wrong for the last 16 years.
It’s the Moog/Moog scenario, a proper minefield.
How is “OR-TECH-A” spelled? They are always mentioned, and now I want to check them out. But google has not been kind to my poor spelling abilities.
Whoops, shoulda put that in the description, sorreeee! It's Autechre!
good
We will welcome you with open arms back to the North where "nothing happens"...Hmmm not sure I can agree with you there about that! Still, there beer's better and cheaper!
Hah, tell that to my teenage self who couldn’t drive yet and was stuck in a country village miles from anywhere!! It will be very different now though...
EP made from samples of you both talking Autechre please thank you
Just starting. That's one vicious cold you've got there.
Hah, not a cold, voice worn out from too much chat at Synthfest!
@@mylarmelodies heard that seconds after I posted... You should take the opportunity to do some Tom Waits covers
Twas a very enjoyable conversation to listen to.
You shoulda heard my Bob Dylan x
mylarmelodies Dylan is my hero!! Is it posted somewhere, Patreon?
Plz someone sample that "yeahyeahyeahyeahyeahyeah"
Alex, I want your t-shirt,,,,,,,,,,,plz
howww did he get a job at the sound lab (obvz it's warranted he's an absolute don I'm just wondering)
spacebats!
Who’s the old difficult man?!?!
La Monte Young!
Hope you feel better soon, I mean hope your voice doesn’t sound like a freeze dried butthole much longer! ❤️
All Your Pets Are Gonna Die
"electrocute" means death by electric shock. Unless you're dead, you've just been shocked and not electrocuted.
Dan Bailiff ... nope, make some better research...
you should do these in english, the intelligible version.
