Bharatanatyam - Lesson 2 - Learn adavus or steps - Nattu Adavu 1 to 8
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Second set of Adavus or steps in Bharatanatyam is called Nattadavu or stretching steps. A beginner learns & practises these adavus repeatedly to perfect them before moving onto learn advanced adavus.
This video is only for reference. Any learning of Bharatanatyam should be done under the proper guidance of a Guru. Adavu demonstrations in this video are based on the distinctive style practised by Kalakshetra & Vazhuvoor.
Hi mam, you are dancing very well. I am a 7th class student, from kerala. It has been my wish for a long time to learn Bharatanatyam. But due to poverty at home, that wish could not be fulfilled. This video of yours was very helpful for me. If you go to study Bharatanatyam, you have to pay Dakshina to the guru, you have to pay fees to learn dance, so it costs a lot of money and it costs lakhs to make a debut. If you keep posting videos like this it will help many people like me.If you can help us, it will be the biggest favor you can do usThankyou 🙏🏻
So nice of you to say that. I am glad to hear my video is of use to you. All the best :)
I was trained in Bharathanatyam in my childhood. Now I recall everything by the help of your lessons to teach my son. Thank you so much

I meant hand posture🙂
I very much appreciate your feedback. It gives a lot of reassurance to me as a teacher. As these video lessons are all one way and there is no way of knowing if the teaching is effective unlike when I teach in front of students in the studio. Thank you immensely 🙏

Excellent job mam. I couldn't complete the class I dropped out because of money issues when I was 10. Now iam 30 I would like to learn but feeling shy.. now I got your classes to guide me. God bless you. thank you..
Hi Vimala, so happy to see your message and your interest in learning. I can totally understand that learning an art form can be hard for some due to many constraints. Please do not hesitate to pursue your passion. Age is no limit. I have few students who are older than 50 just starting out. Do enough stretches and warm up exercises and start learning regularly and consistently. You will be pleased with the result.
Go through step by step if learning online with my videos as below:
1) Start with a video where I explain 3 basic leg positions.

When we strech our hands out, do we keep a slight bend at the elbow?
Hello Shaantanu. A very valid question. Yes the natyaarambe position with stretched arms are held with a slight curve at the elbows.
When we start the lessons, new students are told to stretch hands straight as there is a lot going on and it takes a while for them to get used to the posture etc. At that stage, if we ask them to hold the bend, it usually ends up with a sag at the elbows as they haven't learnt total muscles engagement. In advance lessons and students have a bit maturity to understand, the proper natyaarambe position is taught. Hope I have explained it properly 🙏
Mam, iam 39 and can I learn dance at this age. Can you teach for me and my daughter. She is 6yrs.
Hi Manjula, That's great to hear about your interest. There is no age limit to chase our dreams and passion. I teach to much older beginners than yourself :)
The best way to learn a traditional dance form is face to face from a Guru who can correct and guide in real time. If you do not have access to a Guru where you are, online is the next option. Hope you find a teacher where you live.
I may be living in a different timezone than you :)
Namaste ma'am, I live in Punjab but i feel really connected to classical forms like bharatanatyam or kuchipudi but here therr are no classes other than bhangra. I want to learn bharatanatyam with proper sequence and theory. And i can not move out of the city to learn. Thats really appreciative that you're teaching this so beautifully and i just wanted to know if you posted all the bharatnatyam parts etc because i am unable to find any guidance. I want to know about everything of bharatanatyam but don't know where to start from. What is the syllabus or what is the sequence and cant find a proper full series. I just wanted to know if you can guide me a little like elements of bharatanatyam and their types or parts and sequence. I'll be really greatful❤
Dear Mishthi, great to hear about your interest in Bharatanatyam. While its best to learn any traditional dance form from a Guru and in person, when you don't have access to such learning, tutorial videos can help for sure. I have explained below what you need to do :
1) Start with a video where I explain 3 basic leg positions. ua-cam.com/video/aK-kXuUHmlY/v-deo.html
2) Learn Bhoomi Namana or Namaskaram which we need to do before and after every session. ua-cam.com/video/dl_Kp2D3utw/v-deo.html

Learn to do Mudras: Single hands: ua-cam.com/video/NyoVKzdZJ9c/v-deo.html
Double hands: ua-cam.com/video/-X0j7nHMRnQ/v-deo.html
You need to start and practice very regularly and with utmost patience. As you go through the above, you can check the little dances based on shloka etc. which I have uploaded so you get a feel of how we put together footwork, mudras and facial expressions.
All the best :)
