They are the ones with the money and so there's a whole host of new jobs that provide no value to the average person or society as a whole. That combined with the billions of jobs that could very easily be automated if governments made it their priority to invest in... there's no way we need everybody working any more. It's simply a formality we keep in place because it's been necessary for almost all of human history.

Typically when you hear about anything AI related in the news is actually coming from a field called Deep Learning which is a subfield of Machine Learning which is a subfield of Artificial Intelligence. Machine Learning basically comes from the idea of giving an algorithm millions of examples to look at and letting it figure out on its own what characterizes certain things. Artificial Intelligence is a more general term that describes machines doing things that take intelligence like determining what a document is about or writing an essay.
