- Portal hypertension is a condition in which the pressure in your portal venous system is abnormally high. The portal vein is a large vein that connects the heart with the liver. Cirrhosis (liver scarring) is the most common cause of portal hypertension.
Intrinsic liver disease, blockage, or structural changes that result in higher portal venous flow or increased hepatic resistance can all induce portal hypertension.

Liver is shrunken with caudate lobe hypertrophy and shows heterogenous echotexture. RLS measures 9.5 cm. No IHBRD. Gall bladder is distended with mild wall thickening, measuring 6 mm. The portal vein is 7 mm in diameter with a velocity of 29 cm/s, hepatopetal flow with increased phasicity, likely due to cirrhosis. Multiple periportal, perisplenic collaterals are noted. SMV and SV appear normal in course, caliber, color flow and spectral trace. The hepatic veins shows normal diameter and hepatofugal flow, likely recanalized as compared to prior. The hepatic artery is dilated and shows velocity of 67 cm/ s with PI of 1.3. There is persistent short segment narrowing of cranial portion of intrahepatic IVC. Rest of the IVC shows normal colour uptake and diameter. Splenomegaly is noted (17.5 cm). No ascites is seen.
