This was my favorite album when I was a kid. I liked the fun, fast ones best. As I got older I started to enjoy and appreciate the slower, more heartfelt ones too. Now, 40 years later, this one is my favorite. I have no idea why this is not the most popular Christmas song of all time.
This was my favorite Christmas album when I was a kid, and it still is; though like you, I've changed my mind about which songs are my favorites over the years.
Such a beautiful song sung by such a beautiful voice. I hope John has found the peace he searched for and why don't they ever play this song & a million others that are out there?!
I consider this whole album to be a gift to the whole world. This song, though, this arrangement, is particularly exquisite. There is very little out there that captures the simple peace, beauty, reverence, and wonder of the meaning of Christmas like this.
thee most beautiful Christmas song just about EVER! i love this with all my heart...brings me to tears every single time. deep attachment to this entire album...such a significant album, television show waaaaaay back in the late 70's early 80's. give it a listen. it will make your entire Christmas...if you aren't in heavy into the Christmas spirit...the entire album will put you there, but this music: Noel: Christmas Eve, 1913...will do it by itself.
Jennifer Farnes, my favorite song on this album is Stille Nacht, or Silent Night in German. My paternal grandfather taught me that song, and it is still my favorite Christmas song.
This takes me back to being a small child putting up the Christmas tree with my mom and siblings. This is one of her favorite songs. And one of her favorite albums.
When I get to heaven I want to hear John Denver and Elvis singing. They both had that special sound you get when you sing about God. It's like you can hear him listening. I love carols like this that make you reflect
I grew up with this album, and always considered this song to be a Christmas staple. I was so shocked when I found out many people had never heard of it.
As did I my friend. Getting old, lots of people don’t know the muppets or J.Denver. Takes me instantly back to being a kid. Not Christmas without it. Cheers!
A frosty Christmas Eve, when the stars where shining, I traveled for the home, where westward falls the hill. And for many, many a village, in the darkness of the valley, distant music reached me, peels of bells were ringing. Then sped my thoughts to olden times, to that first of Christmases when shepherds who were watching, heard music in the fields. And they sat there and they marveled, and they knew they could not tell whether it were angels, or the bright stars a singing. But to me heard a far, it was starry music, the singing of the angels, the comfort of our Lord. Words of old that come a traveling, by the riches of the times, and I softly listened, as I stood upon the hill. And I softly listened, as I stood upon the hill.
This is one of my favorites Christmas songs since I was a child. To be able to sit and close your eyes and see the pictures move to the words that are sung. JD had and has a unique gift to have people to do that
A frosty Christmas Eve, when the stars where shining I traveled forth alone, where westward falls the hill And for many, many a village, in the darkness of the valley Distant music reached me, peals of bells were ringing Then sped my thoughts to olden times, to that first of Christmases When shepherds who were watching, heard music in the fields And they sat there and they marveled, and they knew they could not tell Whether it were angels, or the bright stars a-singing But to me heard afar, it was starry music The singing of the angels, the comfort of our Lord Words of old that come a-traveling, by the riches of the times And I softly listened, as I stood upon the hill And I softly listened, as I stood upon the hill
This is my favorite Christmas carol. I've never heard another verdion. John Denver's voice was poignant and sweet. Full of emotion and spirit. He is sorely missed. We're he still with us he'd be a world leader in the fight to save the environment. He loved the natural world and even in the 70's used his talent to advocate for the ecosystem and attempt to raise our conscience toward caring about climate change.
Well said. Happy holidays to you. My folks loved him and this album HAS to be in my life. Not sure my kids feel the same, but I’ll keep trying. We also loved and watched emmet otters jug band Christmas. I’m 45, so selling the muppets to kids 10 & 12 is a tough sell. I don’t blame them, probably like my folks told me I was lucky to see a animated Christmas special on T.v.
This album is my childhood. My parents had the 8track playing over an over every Christmas. My all time favorite Christmas album. And this song, man. So great. John Denver on Christmas was a voice of my youth. Thanks for posting this and the rest of the songs on this album
my favorite christmas song of all time. thank you whoever posted this. its not like todays christmas songs that just sound to loud and just too much going on, this is nice and calm free spirited music.
I heard it years ago, but had forgotten it, until I heard it on "Kevin Probably Saves the World". What a gorgeous song-was thrilled that the writers decided to use it on the show!
I was a HUGE John Denver fan, but I don't remember this song. Of course, I knew immediately (from "Kevin (Probably) Saves the World") that it was John Denver and, of course, I had to search it out. On probably my tenth run through now. So thankful they played a John Denver song, especially one as beautufil as this one.
@@kellyknight315 If you've not already, you should check out the entire John Denver and the Muppets: A Christmas Together album. While some of it is sillier than others, you can hear i his voice that John was having a great time and it's just generally a wonderful album.
What a thrill to hear this song in its entirety on last night's episode of "Kevin Probably Saves The World." I had not heard the song in many, many years and had forgotten the lyrics and the title and had to look it up on Google. I thank the show for using John's music.
I also heard the song on "Kevin Probably Saves the World", and was thrilled that the writers decided to use the song. It fit in perfectly with the episode! John's voice, the words, the music-absolutely perfect!
If I remember correctly he took a pre-existing poem and simply applied a musical arrangement to it, so John did not write the lyrics, but the end result is beautiful. My favorite Christmas song.
A sweet lovely song for everybody. It is also present on jd Christmas concert in Washington DC .performed in December 1996. Sadly his last Christmas The whole CD is amazing performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a joy to listen to him talking kindly to the accompanying Boys Choir and the audience I listen to this concert all the time. It is sold by Amazon
This is actually a poem written many years ago before john Denver put it to music. It is so beautiful what he did to it. It was originally written by poet Robert Bridges
This song comforts me. I hope it comforts others.

I agree wholeheartedly! This is the only Christmas album I listen to but this is by far my favorite track.
It was my favorite too. We played it every Christmas morning ❤
This was my favorite Christmas album when I was a kid, and it still is; though like you, I've changed my mind about which songs are my favorites over the years.

I was knocked out the 1st time I heard this song on the album back in the day ...it's one of John's most beautiful songs ever!
His voice is so sweet. He sounds like an angel singing. I get choked up when I hear this one. Thank you.
Love this album.
Played this on cassette for my children.
Just Beautiful!!!!!!!
John was a treasure to all of us.
The voice of the stars. Sing, John. Fill the universe. 🌹

Jennifer Farnes I can't deny I get misty with this one, as with many songs on this album
This takes me back to being a small child putting up the Christmas tree with my mom and siblings. This is one of her favorite songs. And one of her favorite albums.
For sure. Listened to this as a kid in late seventies and still do. Wouldn’t be Christmas without it.
Amen jf ⚓💙🍥
Wish the radio stations who play Christmas music would discover this.
Sigh. Feel better just listening to it.
When I get to heaven I want to hear John Denver and Elvis singing. They both had that special sound you get when you sing about God. It's like you can hear him listening. I love carols like this that make you reflect
SarahSmiles912 May our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ continue to bless and keep you and yours in his loving hands.
Sarah: Hope I am there with you!!
This is my favorite Christmas song, and it always transports me straight back to childhood. And inevitably makes me cry.

John Denver, what a great artist. We lost you much too early. Merry Christmas.🎄
This song is so calming. I adore listening to it when I am feeling anxious or stressed.

I miss John, great song!!
My Choir sang this last year for Christmas, and It has stayed in my head since then. Beautiful.
Thank you. I miss my Mum, and she loved this song, and so it takes me back.
My most favourite Christmas song ever. It doesn't feel like Christmas until I have heard this and Johns voice ♥️
This song has always moved me, even when I was a small child. Thank you for posting this.

I have never heard this song before, until "Kevin Probably Saves the World"! Beautiful!
Scott Kjeer That is where I first heard it as well, and I thought I knew most of his songs. It is beautiful.
I heard it years ago, but had forgotten it, until I heard it on "Kevin Probably Saves the World". What a gorgeous song-was thrilled that the writers decided to use it on the show!

I'm listening to this now. I don't care that we're still three months away from Christmas.
Pentarax (;
I totally agree! This song, for me, has more meaning than any other Christmas song I've heard. It's just so beautiful...
I still remember watching this when it first aired on TV. Just a beautiful song.
David Bruce agreed 100%
i had this album when we were kids ..every time i hear this song..brings back golden memories..
froknoi tots same here as well! Such cherished memories.
froknoi tots couldn’t have put it any better. So many warm feelings almost to tears when I hear these songs.
Me too! We always decorated the tree to this record album.
My all-time favorite Christmas song. Thank you for posting it.
GREAT SONG!!!!!
best christmas song ever!

still a classic!
so lovely. JD was a part of my teens and I have lots of his 70s work but this...is among his best.
If I remember correctly he took a pre-existing poem and simply applied a musical arrangement to it, so John did not write the lyrics, but the end result is beautiful. My favorite Christmas song.
This whole album was as much of my childhood christmases as anything I can remember. Awesome song!
My favorite song on my favorite Christmas album.
This is such a beautiful song. It brings back many wonderful childhood memories. Thank-you for sharing this.
Beautiful. Blessed Yule to all.
A sweet lovely song for everybody.

Christmas song with sir John Denver's voice!! ❤️
⛄️ ❄️ 🎄 🖤 ✨
Nice song 🙂
oh this is just so good. always loved it.
My favourite from this album. Thank you.
Let's see if I have this right...lyrics are actually a poem by Robert Bridges, arrangement by Lee Holdridge, and of course, that voice, JD!
I've been trying to get one of my local stations to include the entire album in their Christmas music selection.
John Denver without The Muppets on this one.
What a marvellous song. The lyrics are originally from John Denver?
This is actually a poem written many years ago before john Denver put it to music. It is so beautiful what he did to it. It was originally written by poet Robert Bridges
The tempo of this recording is a click or two shower than the album
I have a CD where he sings this live, and it's faster and there's more percussion...and it's just not as pretty :( Ten billion wins for this song :3
