We would never let one bad experience sour our time here in San Blas. This is just something that can happen to anyone. It is just too bad to learn he has been doing this for over a decade. No Shame! lol
Apio had approached us also, but luckily we had read on active captain that this was his M.O., hopefully other cruiser see this. Every other encounter we had with the locals was amazing.!
That's the thing! I would hate for someone to be deterred from visiting this beautiful area, but everyone who does needs to know there is a chance he can come around to try his scam on them. So happy to hear you guys were prewarned about him.

Greetings from NE Ohio. Where we had a winter storm the past two days. The temp got down to 17F last night and it's a balmy 27F @9:30am. 😏 I don't think that the local fellow realizes he's messed up. News of him stiffing you is going to get around thanks to your channel.
Thank you for refreshing my memories of the great experiences we had cruising for quite a few seasons in San Blas , a very special place and lovely people.
Linh!! If you don't get it together and publish a cookbook, you will be letting down thousands of fans all over the world. 😁 We've all been literally *begging* for the Basik Cookbook for I don't know how long. Pretty pretty pretty please? The agony is palpable!! The Admiral and I are just two of the many who are desperate for your culinary greatness! (Was that troweling it on too thick, or should I grovel some more?)
After posting our experience on a San Blas WhatsApp group chat, cruisers are onto him as well as others sharing he has done the same thing to them. It's good to pass on good and bad experiences onto fellow cruisers for future reference to be aware.
I think we just need to know where the hidey holes are for fish. These guys all spear fish because most of the fish around these islands are too small or almost nonexistent.....or maybe we need to get better. lol
Another great episode . The trouble is , that one bad apple , will probably stop other honest locals from making a few dollars from offering this type of service .. It's hard to over look what he has done , and sailors now , will be very weary . Apart from that , great location
I'm really sorry that you had to run into a dishonest person like that, it makes you skeptical of everyone. Dessert looked delicious. Compass you little tough guy. ha ha. Thanks again guys, stay safe y'all. GO COMPASS 👍🏻💕🐾🍖
Hopefully this won’t dampen the mood of the family because of a pirate in paradise but it can happen anywhere. Some more of those incredible dishes Linh . Be careful and stay safe my friends God love you all.
I hope you posted a warning about that guy on whatever cruiser net you guys frequent. That tiramisu reminds me a bit of my July 4th Red, White and Blue trifle. Mix equal parts Cool Whip & vanilla pudding and alternate layers of that with that, angel food or pound cake, fresh blueberries & strawberries. It makes a nice presentation in clear glass bowl and tastes delicious. We live in the self-proclaimed Strawberry Capitol and also have U-pick-em blueberry orchards nearby. We (my wife actually) usually picks 4 gallons of blueberries every summer and flash freezes them. I do the same with our locally grown strawberries.
We did and learned he has been doing this for over a decade, but it's always good to pass on first hand experience so future cruiser are forewarned. Sound like you guys are in fruit heaven. I remember berry picking in the summertime with my (Linh) grandparents. I think we ate more than we picked, but it was fun and delicious! What I would give for fresh picked berries right now!
Let us all put forth every effort to make sure that thieving scoundrel isn’t able to do “business” with other cruisers in that area for a long time to come!
Hello! We are two sailors who have watched your videos for several years. We are currently in Ensenada heading south on our 38’ DownEast cutter, Dulcinea. I would love to have your recipe for the Lemmon tiramisu? Sorry about the scamming🤨 We will watch out for him next year! Thanks for the heads up! Fair winds and following seas!
I was wondering how that Tiramisu was gonna taste, judging by Emma's nonstop fork action answered my question. Scams happen. U won't be the first cruiser to experience this nor will you be the last cruiser. His reputation is forever tarnished. Leaving the San Blas- kinda. Basik has yet to experience the Caribbean - but will in the many videos yet to come. Now- Linh will you pass on your chef skills to Emma? A nice addition to the cooking videos and Emma gains life skills not learned from a laptop. * Well Teal u did try- " Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Ahhh no! This is not a scam. Maybe some thicken epoxy would have change Linh's response. Better luck next time Capt'n.
I gotta wonder how many of the younger folks actually got the 'are soon parted' reference. They only seem to know the latest rainbow slang or last month's "song".
Apio is known in the San blas to do this. Anyone who has been before would have told you not to deal with him as that's his schtick. He will lure you in and then disappear with any money you give him
Lol, I wish we were warned about him. It wasn't until after we posted about our experience on the San Blas WhatsApp group chat that others came out with their own stories of the same con.
Never tell people your actual travel plans. Something similar happened to me in Mexico. When they know you're leaving the country soon, that's when they scam you out of cash.😮
It appears that you just put Apio on blast, that's a good thing. He was playing the short con, gaining trust then going in for the payout. You just warned the other sailors in the area and who are heading to the area about a thief. Hopefully no one else will fall victim to this scum. And maybe, just maybe, someone will get even. you can con a con man, they never see it coming.
I think posting about the dishonest delivery guy would be fair & informative. He definitely took advantage & what I would consider bad news. I think there is an app called seapeople that might be a good way to share.

Scammers only scam themselves, they lose their self respect live a lonely life carrying more guilt with each scam they complete. Sad. Sorry for the betrayal. Put it behind you. 🐻
We hope that is the case because his bad behavior only gives the locals a bad reputation. Everyone else we have met here have been nothing but wonderful.
Yes, we put it out on the San Blas WhatsApp group chat to let everyone know to be careful. Heard back from some fellow cruisers with similar experiences. Cruisers look out for each other. 👍
After reaching out the the San Blas cruising community, it became apparent he has been doing this for well over a decade. Cruisers as a rule don't like to spread unsavory information and love to promote cruising grounds, but after we posted about our incident to let others know what happened to us, others came forward and said the same thing happened to them.
Off topic here, but just watching episode 296, bad engine starter. Been a farmer my whole life. I know tractors that have sat outside in NY winters for decades. That starter corrosion was definitely not the issue. In fact, that had less corrosion than many new cars have while sitting on the lot. Anyway, sometimes when an engine shuts down, the flywheel starter ring happens to line up in such a way that the starter motor can not engage it. You will hear that click of the solenoid and nothing else. Your solenoid sounded fine. A miniscule bit of crankshaft rotation can be all it takes for everything to now engage properly. Another frequent issue is the starter can shift slightly. I don't know how, but it shifts a hair in towards the flywheel. This will also prevent the star gear from aligning with the ring gear. Just loosen the 2 starter mounting bolts, wiggle the starter, and retighten. But the most common cause that a starter appears to have gone bad is a simple tiny bit too much of electrical resistance to allow full amperage to get to the starter. Enough to throw the solenoid, but not quite enough to get the starter to turn the engine. Especially a high compression engine like a diesel. Linh was able to easily unscrew that wingnut. That means there was enough loss of contact area at the battery to allow a micron level of oxidation between the cable and the battery post. I still use my grandfather's tractors every year. From the late 30's and early 40's. Only 1 has actually needed the starter rebuilt. And only because one of the brushes got broken somehow. Always benchtest starters before thinking the worst. Simply connect the starter body to the (-) battery terminal, and touch the (+) terminal to that copper post that had the (+) cable attached to it. Hold the starter firmly. It should jump and spin easily. Often these 'rebuilt' starters consist of a bit of spraypaint and a nice plastic bag. If you managed to read all this, thank you for your time, and really enjoy your channel.🍻
As they say, S%*T happens, you handled it with grace and hopefully it doesn't spoil your views of the locals. I also have a small dog, a Pomeranian cross, he just loves to head out into the back yard and yell at all his doggy neighbours. Dudley used to live beside us, he passed away several years ago but Linden, my dog, still goes to the fence and barks at him. Now we have Aces living behind us. Aces is a very handsom golden with a big booming bark. Linden will head out and get Aces into trouble, Linden is 18 and his bark isn't that loud anymore so when he gets Aces into trouble for barking he returns back inside all triumphant. Silly little man So do you ever get tired of waking up in paradise?
We are so fortunate to be here and live this life and sometimes this will happen with traveling. The island life isn't always sunshine and rainbows but we do appreciate whatever is thrown at us....good and bad! 😊
I personally would be more likely to believe that someone stole the money that you gave the guy and he was too embarrassed to tell you and he was trying to find someway to make it right. If he was planning on scamming you he probably would not have given you his telephone number and would not have answered when you telephoned him.

Instead, call it, "Stupid Lazy Gringo Tax," and move on in Wisdom and stop with the BOO HOO in Paradise. All the best. Like the VLOGS,
We make a point not to ever judge and pass blanket judgment to anyone. That isn't fair to anybody.
