7 JRPGs Switch Owners Must Have in Their Collection

- With the Nintendo Switch in its potential final years, I thought I should at least highlight 7 JRPGs that you should have in your Switch library. Now let's be real, there are a lot of games that qualify for this list, but I had to limit it down to 7 games. My criteria basically comes down to how much I enjoyed the game and how important of game it is to have.
Do you have any essential JRPGs you must have in your Switch collection? Let me know in the comments down below!

Octopath Traveler 2 deserves to be on every must have list.
I would add Ys8, one of the RPGs I played.
Agreed with the first statement. I was gonna include Ys 8 in this list, but I didnt want to make this list too long...
One thing random thing I loved about octo 2 is that poisoning is actually okay for once. I don’t recall a jrpg were you could actually poison a boss successfully. The damage kinda racks up
strong list. Xenoblades, Fire Emblem, and Octopath is why I play RPG games today. They were my introductions to RPGs. Your video..I see no lies told. :)
Thank you 😊
LOL - great to hear Tokyo Mirage FE mentioned - I haven't really played much of it (on Wii U) but it was kind of fun.
Underrated game of the decade in my opinion!
Just found your channel. Great playlist! Looking forward to your content!
Welcome aboard!
I discovered your channel recently and I'm loving watching a lot of videos, especially those about shopping and collecting, I love your vibe and your philosophy of "if you're not in the mood for the game, leave it for later", I've been trying to add this to my life because the backlog just increase, learning to leave some behind is good!
Keep up the great content!
Thank you so much!! Appreciate the kind words!
Enjoyed your take Mandy Lee, nicely done
Fun list! I like that' it's personal and what you want on there! Good stuff!
Thank you 😊
Your videos keep getting better and better! Really enjoy your channel!
Thank you 😊
Another great video!!!!
Thank you 😊
Good video Mandy!
I just got a Switch Oled the beginning of 2023, I couldn't afford a new system for several years. I wanted to play the Fire Emblem games, Hogwarts Legacy and Breath of the Wild. I am slowly working on a new physical collection for my Switch - I am so happy with all the games available, I love this machine! 😉👍
That's honestly amazing! Happy collecting!
I thank you for making this videos you are a cool honest person
My favorite jrpg games are baten kaitos on the gamecube, golden sun and golden sun II on gba, the dragon quest series, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and FFXV i didn't play many rpg on switch but your recommendations were solid i liked your video
Cool list. Im also trying out the atelier games. Got a good amount of them On Ps3.
Nice!
Just found your channel and this is the first video I watched. Loved it and I've subscribed. Look forward to watching your other videos.
With that out of the way, I am an older gamer with my first JRPG being FF1 on the NES. So I'm unsure what you mean when you say you don't usually play retro games because of all of the J? Can you explain?
Thank you and I hope you enjoy the other content! And what I mean about retro games is I don’t enjoy the lack of quality of life features from more modern games
@@MandyleePlays oh I 100% agree. I grew up on them. I did my time in the trenches. I want fast travel and difficulty selectors please and thank you.
Great video and list! I just finished an otome game called nightshade and it was amazing. Next, I’m gonna go back and play the original FF7 before playing rebirth. And finish off princess peach Showtime. Do you think visual novels fall under RPG’s?
It depends on what visual novel you play because some just are straight-up novels. While others have RPG elements. I think the closest you can get to RPG with a visual novel esque appearance is 13 Sentinels, in my opinion.
👍🏾 Good video. I was a little surprised to see the Pixel Remasters as i was also thinking about including it. 7 from me: Miitopia, Unicorn Overlord, XC3, Bravely Default 2, Pokemon Legends Arceus,SMT V,, Hogwarts Legacy
I might need to make another video of the games I missed on this list 🤔
Love that ryza in the back!!! I love her
Thanks! Its from Good Smile!
There is also a 4th route in Three Houses albeit very similar to Golden deer route.
Tokyo mirage session is my favorite game on the switch! I finished 3 times, 100% hardest difficulty (it's very rare i do that).
Love its battle system.
All characters overcome their struggle, it's interesting.
I like the dedication! Wish I had the time energy to do so 😅
@@MandyleePlays well it's in the past. Nowaday i can play like 2h a day. I'm glad i have those good memories tho.
Did you play Triangle Strategy? I really liked that one. Easy to use but super enjoyable tactical RPG combat. The story is good too and has multiple endings.
I played it, sadly I did not like it... 😅
All of these are top tier games
The switch is such a JRPG machine in my eyes technically the best JRPG machine ever.
This!
Also a big fan of Tokyo Mirage Sessions. I don’t think the game gets enough credit. Not perfect by any means. Completely understand if you’re not blown away by it. But it’s solid.
I’ve got most of these and loved those I have played! I would add:
Trails to Zero/Azure
Ys VIII
Nier: Automata
But a great list of games! I need to get Tokyo Mirage…
I would have added Trails, but I did beat, let alone start any of the games 😅
This is what sucks about making a list with only 7 games. Some of your favorites get left out, Nier, in this case 😭
Tokyo Mirage also had censoring from Wii U to Switch.
Great list, and picks all around. I would add with NieR: Automata as another pick for sure
I kind of whiffed this list because I completely forgot to include Nier...damn lol
I know you put the FF pixel remasters, but I think 7,8,9, ten and 12.
Overall your list was fine though no mention of Bravely Default II or Monster Hunter Stories 2/ Rise. Now to the slander Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the game is way more worthy to have then XCDE given the sheer amount of content within the base game before you add Torna to the mix. Plus Shulk is just a vessel for the player not necessarily a mc like Rex who undergoes changes within the Aegis journey and how can you top Malos & Jin story arc. Dickson and Zanza trope lol.
Exactly, Xenoblade 2 gets so much slander but it's my favorite one by far, it's sad that it's so underrated
@captainkidd22 People get caught up on some of the blade designs or shonen aspects of cutscenes while ignoring the enrich battle system, world environments, and complex character motivations. Still the series as a whole is peak.
This is what happens when I make a list with 7 games...some games get lost 😭
Nah Xenoblade 1 is still better. Torna was the only thing carrying XC2. To say Shulk is a vessel for the player is untrue. He starts out cheerful but quickly turns into an unstoppable revenge machine, and when his morals conflict with his goals he reacts in a very believable manner.
Yeah, I agree with you but don't at the same time, Shulk is great, though Rex is the one who I get inspiration, Shulk is not just a vessel from the player, don't speak like that of MonadoBoy!
But yeah, even before I play Xenoblade 2 I felt Dickson so... It was missing more to make him a villain, than Xenoblade 2 blew my mind with the develop of the villains and I wish it was the same to the ones in XC1. Zanza I started to understand better after knowing his origin through Xenoblade 2 and that was great
Okay, to explain why us, as SMT fans are mad about TMS, it's because it's not an SMT crossover, and all the representation goes to FE. The combat system is it's own thing, what it should have been is something along the lines of medieval devil survivor, that would have been absolutely perfect, get the SMT protagonists and the most well known FE characters in there and that would have been the perfect crossover for them, but only one side got any representation.
I want to play Golf Story and Bravely Default 2.
Earthbound is so slept on
I played Earthbound, actually! Love it a lot!
Ill agree ! Next one are the Suidoken 1 and 2 Remaster ...and we can finaly marry ! 😂😂😂( Just jokin to tell your List is nice )
I keep sleeping on Tokyo Mirage Sessions. I always forget it exists but I REALLY want to play it 😭
It is heavily slept on. I think because of how obscure the concept is, it did not attract a ton of ppl to the game.
I feel like a Trails game should be on here now, they're so underrated
Zero/Azure are a great point cause you can get it all in the switch and it’s a decent start.
I would add Trails, but I have bot beaten any of them just yet 😅
I am working my way slowly, of course. Plus, I love Zero from what I have played so far
so i have all the games on your list and agree although i would prob put xenoblade 3 instead of 1, also i would add dragon quest 11 to it, everyone who likes rpgs has to play that one
Tbh, I didn't really like DQ11 all that much 😅. I prefer the Dragon Quest spinoff games.
Xenoblade 3 is good, though the antagonists were kind of meh.
Never was able to find a copy of Tokyo mirage fe encore for the switch that was not over $140 so I unfortunately have never tried it😅 enjoyed seeing your list thanks for sharing.
This pirates fave JRPGS on the switch are
Xenoblade chronicles 2
Star ocean the second story R
Unsighted
Alelier Ryza 2
Harvestella
Fire emblem three houses ( have not completed it however)
Trials of mana
And yes Xenoblade 2 is my favorite in the trilogy ( well X is actually but it’s not on the switch)
From the story to the in depth combat system and mechanics I love everything about Xenoblade 2❤ and while I fully respect others opinions and feelings regarding liking the first or third game better then the second.
To me both Xenoblade chronicles 1 and 3 were to bland boring and lackluster in terms of story combat as well as character development and growth..
Wipe your screen, Mandy! 🤣 Only joking haha, so glad to see Xenoblade on this list, such a beautiful and peak game! ❤
😂😂😂
Gotta do better presenting my switch, lol. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Xenoblade is peak
My fav UA-camr ٩(♡ε♡ )۶
You’re so beautiful 🤩! Love this list all great games!
This was a very solid list, I’ve played most of them but unlike you I played Xenoblade on the 3DS which now makes it my least favorite out of the bunch. I’ll need to redeem it on the switch at some point. I need to get to octopath 2, the first one soured me a bit with the true final boss since not all 8 characters were at max level at that point.
Oooooof, Xenoblade 3ds. I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that 😬
Octopath 2 in a video --- Instalike
There's another one you should mention. Ring Fit Adventure.
It’s not a JRPG.
Ay wipe yo screen lol jk, great video as always. Always good to spread info of how many good JRPGS are on the switch and you adding your own personal opinion to it makes it more passionate/worthwhile. Keep up the great work!
Hey, at least I cleaned my screen during the video, lol.
I try at least to be passionate 😅. Really appreciate the kind words though
The only problem with Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster is how expensive it is
Yeah not the best idea on there department
I'd love to play Xenoblade too bad its not on PC.
I don't think OT2 relys to much in grinding. The game is designed to be beatable even if characters are not at recomended levels. Surge, there are hard bosses in the game, and I strugled with a few of them, but, all it realy took me was one, maybe two more tries. With good enough grasp of the mechanics, you can beat the game even if characters are a few levels lower than the recomended level. And you can make up the lack of levels with good gear, wich in this game, there are tons of options that you can buy, steal, find... In my playthrough, I grinded mostra as an option. Maybe for the final boss it would be necessary to grind, but still... that's post game.
I did get stuck in the final boss multiple times. Took me more than five tries even with all the grinding I did
I hope they call the Switch 2 The Super Switch.
Whatever happened to Xenoblade Chronicles X?
It's not a Switch game 😂. Hence why it is not on the list.
It is a different time line, a different console. I don't even know if it truly exist to be honest
Not sure if FF PX are better than the GBA versions, while I haven't played the Pixel Remastered versions, I know they lack the added content from GBA, I'd always go with the added content of GBA. I have never played FF 6 so I think the GBA version has no added content so FF 6 PC should be better than GBA but 1,2,5 all have more stuff, with 2 even having a whole new game to play though with just a couple of dungeons.
Youre so cute Mandy, nice list too.
I don't know why Super Mario RPG gets so much hype. I played the original way back on the SNES and it was cute and enjoyable, but never one of my favorites. Maybe it's recency bias? It wouldn't come close to any of my "best of" lists even if it is still a good game. There's no way it should be mentioned over something like DQ11.
Yeah, I beat it last year on Wii, some months after they announced the remake because I felt like a criminal for having no beat it, but... It is not like if that was one of the greatest RPGs I have played. Now Paper Mario The Thousand Year door though it might not be in my top list, I like it a lot more and I am hyped to play it again. But I understand those who have played in the childhood and have nostalgia on it
I didn't really like DQ11 all that much, to be quite honest.
I tend to put games that I enjoy a lot. Super Mario RPG is a game I did enjoy a lot.
@@MandyleePlays well, if you really enjoyed it, no one can take it off from you! we are wrong judging a personal list
I couldnt stand xc3 it was such a pain to finish. The dlc was really good tho
Really??? The only gripes I had with XC3 was Moebius being so laughably bad (minus a couple of members)
@@MandyleePlays I think maybe because I just kept comparing it to 2 while I was playing it is why I didnt like it. I didnt like anything to do with moebius mechanics, controlling 6 members instead of 3 was too much for me, and the story didnt like how the game forces u to use different classes to unlock skills.
No dragon quest, list is wrong
Maybe next time ;)
As someone who loves all the Xenoblade games (which includes X), hearing you say Xenoblade 2 "is not bad but is the worst one" is not going to come off well to anyone who doesn't know the games. They will just hear "Xenoblade 2 is bad" even though you aren't directly saying that. It doesn't help when you repeat it every other sentence. I respect your opinion, but the way you presented the series does not make it sound appealing.
Xenoblade 2 > 3 > Definitive
Hey that's your opinion!
Geriatric system 😮 7 years omg
lmaoooooooooo
13 Sentinels and Unicorn Overlord would be my picks, along with the Xenoblade titles, P5 Royal, Super Mario RPG, and Octapath Traveler II.
Prior to the Switch, I had given up entirely on JRPGs. I was done with the genre, totally finished. I no longer cared. The last truly excellent one I had played was in 2008.
Then I saw Octopath Traveler, and a few eyebrows were raised. I kept it in the back of my mind. Then the Live-A-Live remake hit (deep, deep mania to be sure! I thought it had been lost to the annals of time!), and then the remake of Super Mario RPG.
Now I've modded my PSP (I NEVER mod my shit!), and am going through Lunar 1 and 2 and am seriously considering digging out my vintage RPGs from storage to go through them again. Insanity.
Excellent list. Some old classics, plus new ones that look interesting.
I'll skip Final Fantasy II, though. There isn't enough money in the world to get me to wade through that sewage again.
Xenoblade 2 is the best in the series sorry I think people who don’t like it don’t understand the deep layers of combat it’s amazing
Someone else who sees the gem of a game that is Xenoblade chronicles 2❤ cool
And yea the deep depth of the combat system really caught me off guard I was not expecting that….
Xenoblade 2. The combat is 8.5/10, and the story is 4/10 cause that's the amount of good chapter it has.
Torna: The Golden Country. The combat 9.5/10, and the story is 8/10.
@@hailthequeenFM
Everyone is entitled to their own individual opinion.
at least last I checked free speech individual thoughts or likes or dislikes was not a crime in this country .
That is in fact what makes diversity and individuality so great.
Xenoblade as a whole isnt only about combat.
Also you can just accept people to have different tastes as you.
For example i finished the first one and the 3rd (which is my fav).
For the 2nd one, i did really enjoy the battles but i gave up midway cuz the game didnt hook me. I dislike that gacha blade system too.
Twos combat is fine, but the story was a whiplash compared to one and certainly three.
Persona 5 Royal influential? You kidding me? Sorry, but it DIDN'T influence other JRPGs, it's the other way around as in it IS influenced by other JRPGs
Also, on the Switch, it's not even the better version, that ''honor'' goes to the original PS4 version
Lastly, the game is a complete crapfest compared to other entries in the series, it's just an ''all style no substance'' kind of deal where it just copy-pated Persona 3 and 4 without doing anything new other than being flashier
If being flashier is the main focus of the game over improving the overall gameplay loop, then they did a really shit job
Rant aside, the rest of the list is 🔥
Agreed. I enjoyed Persona 5, but as someone who has played every game in the series, Persona 3 and 4 are the most influential. Persona 3 is my personal favorite along with Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment.
@@derek9579 How is the modern Persona games influential when that social gimmick already introduced in JRPGs BEFORE them
In fact, the only way for Persona to continue, ATLUS had to include it to make it different from the other SMT subseries, thus it being INFLUENCED and NOT the other way around
@@martinde-serres8724 It depends on what one would consider “Influential”. Influential is a very subjective and ambiguous term because it can encompass a number of things. Influential could mean it’s overall impact on the gaming industry. If that is the case, Persona is far from the first entry to incorporate social life elements in a JRPG and it does not have to be original to be influential. Influential can mean more than that. Influential could mean the overall impact that the works have had on generations of gamers. Let’s be real, ask any ordinary modern day gamer about the JRPG genre and many will hardly mention the older JRPGS that incorporate social life elements. But many will mention Persona. Specially Persona 3, Persona 4, and Persona 5 because it was their gateway to the JRPG genre and spawned more interest in the franchise and the JRPG genre as a whole. So it is fair to say that these modern day Persona titles are influential in their own way. So there you go! Another perspective for you! lol
@@derek9579 That's bullshit and you know it, as both older and newer gamers have experienced older JRPGs trough multiple methods, so they've experienced social elements in those older games BEFORE even playing P3-5, so that whole comment is rendered moot.
Also, like I said, P3-5 are NOT influential to gaming as a whole as NONE of the JRPGs that came out during their respective timeframes had their developers saying ''Oh, those social sim elements in those Persona games are nice! Let's put them in our games then, that'll make them successful!''
THEY decide to incorporate them depending on their impact on the stories themselves, NOT because P3-5 had them.
Same goes for the rest of the gameplay loop, as each JRPG have their own take on the JRPG formula, they didn't copy those particular games.
Try not to outsmart me, man!
@@martinde-serres8724 Gaming like all forms of art and media are left entirely to the interpretation of the consumer. What is influential to you might not be what is influential to others. So assuming that every gamer new and old has experienced older JRPGs does not encompass everyone’s experience.
Did you not read? I was not referring to the influence or originality that these games have had on the industry as a whole, but rather the impact that these games have had on a modern day audience. So your whole argument is completely out of touch. You are pretty much arguing with yourself lol
It does not take much to outsmart you. Just a little common sense. You sound upset. That’s good. Stay mad! You seem like the type of person that makes gaming their entire personality and life and that is just sad. Please touch some grass. You can use it lmao 🤣
