46 years old, 38 years a rebel and I only discovered this song last year and jaysus what a song. its become part of my repertoire, both singing and playing it on whistle, flute and pipes.. Eireann Go Brach.. tiocfaidh ar la...
Love this song. I doubt it accurately describes the last moments of Dinny Lacey, who was killed by the Free State army in Aherlow in Feb 1923 during the Civil War, in a gun battle in which one of his IRA comrades and two soldiers were killed and his column captured. But who cares though. Still a great song.
"On a mountain wild and airy stood a brave young volunteer By his side his darling Mary fondly tied his bandolier On his shoulder she lay crying: 'Oh, my love, please do not go For I know that men are dying in the Glen of Aherlow.' 'I must go for I am hounded from the home and friends I know For my comrades are surrounded in the Glen of Aherlow' As he marched away to glory, to return she knew not when, Sounds like thunder told the story of the fighting in the glen And the sound of rifles firing filled her sweet young heart with fear Mary breathed a prayer to heaven for her brave young volunteer 'I must go for I am hounded from the home and friends I know For my comrades are surrounded in the Glen of Aherlow' On a mountain wild and airy in the land he loved the best, His young comrades and his Mary gently laid him down to rest There a lonely watch she’s keeping while her young heart cries its fill For although he lies sleeping, far away she hears him still: 'I must go for I am hounded from the home and friends I know For my comrades are surrounded in the Glen of Aherlow'" 'I must go for I am hounded from the home and friends I know For my comrades are surrounded in the Glen of Aherlow'"

Fine song well done!
"On a mountain wild and airy stood a brave young volunteer
By his side his darling Mary fondly tied his bandolier
On his shoulder she lay crying: 'Oh, my love, please do not go
For I know that men are dying in the Glen of Aherlow.'
'I must go for I am hounded from the home and friends I know
For my comrades are surrounded in the Glen of Aherlow'
As he marched away to glory, to return she knew not when,
Sounds like thunder told the story of the fighting in the glen
And the sound of rifles firing filled her sweet young heart with fear
Mary breathed a prayer to heaven for her brave young volunteer
'I must go for I am hounded from the home and friends I know
For my comrades are surrounded in the Glen of Aherlow'
On a mountain wild and airy in the land he loved the best,
His young comrades and his Mary gently laid him down to rest
There a lonely watch she’s keeping while her young heart cries its fill
For although he lies sleeping, far away she hears him still:
'I must go for I am hounded from the home and friends I know
For my comrades are surrounded in the Glen of Aherlow'"
'I must go for I am hounded from the home and friends I know
For my comrades are surrounded in the Glen of Aherlow'"

Is this song about an anti treaty IRA volunteer shot by the staters in '23
Yep it’s about Dinny Lacey a relation of mine. However it doesn’t accurately describe his death or what led to it.
lovely song
a boy tom fahey
Who wrote this version of the song? I am familiar with the 1860 song of the same name by Charles J Kickham. I like them both!
Evey Blalock This is a great Quick step... and of course both versions are great.
I think Patrick McGuighan, formally of 'Barleycorn wrote and sang this version but it was a much slower tempo.
