  • Michelle Anderson, founder of Clarinet Mentors (www.learnclarinetnow.com), presents a technic to improve individual clarinet high notes. This is a specific exercise to improve high notes that tend to jump out, or feel difficult to control. You can download the worksheet at: www.clarinetmentors.com/resour....

This video really helped with making my high notes smoother and softer, which are both a problem for me. I have 1 and 1/4 years of experience and I was wondering how you can make smooth transitions from A to B. Thanks!

Thanks for this video, it's going to help me improve some passages in Rossini's Introduction, Theme, and Variations.

Hi - It is normal for clarinets to play sharp. Rather than loosen your embouchure, you can tune your instrument by pulling your barrel out a bit, and then checking your pitch. Beginners often play flat, but once their air and embouchure are working well, most clarinets will play a bit sharp. You want to ensure that you are not 'biting" on the reed with jaw pressure which can force the pitch up a bit. My guess is you just need to pull out your barrel. Your clarinet is fine for starters. I'm a flautist of almost 25 years. I have always been sharp on that yet I'm always flat on the clarinet. Go figure. :) I've only been on the clarinet now almost three weeks. I can go above the break easily but my frustration is going back and forth from under and above the break. The pitch doesn't want to come out and when it does, it's weak till the next beat. Tips? Ideas? Embouchure is getting stronger. Fortunately the one teaching me said that I have it right, I just gotta strengthen it to play longer and longer. I'm using an Artley 17s with Legere 3 or Vandorean 3 reeds. The mouthpiece is the Hite Premier with the Rovner ligature.

I would experiment with half-holing the top index finger hole on the left hand. This evens out the air pressure which makes that transition more comfortable. The fingering is harder at first, but it can help. If it is really fast, and you are not going higher than a D, sometimes you can get away with a trill fingering for D which will respond more easily.

I find your tutorials so helpful, thanks Michelle. I would love to hear you play in them. I was especially hoping to hear you play the section of music you mentioned at the start of the tutorial. Can you please send me the link to this piece so I can look it up?

Hi Michelle , im have been learning clarinet for about 3 years in a marching band . My Bb clarinet is going sharper . I tried loosing my embouchure but I sound different when tuning with other clarnineties. Im using Vito classic is this a good brand for starters ?

I really needed this video! Thank you very much, Michelle! Would you be interested in doing a video on voicing/ toungue position? I have been experimenting with voicing tones on the clarinet, trying to get clarion and altissimo overtones out of chalumeau fingerings. I find that voicing is a subject that most clarinet pedagogies kind of gloss over, and I find it to be so important. I'm interested to hear your pointers. :)

Very good video! If you are playing a top E to a top A you are using the same fingering, so don't you have to bite a little?

Hi Michelle, I have been playing the clarinet for about 4 years, but in the band I was in we were playing very very low notes like we were bass, but I moved from that school and now I am playing more advanced notes. I was wondering how is it possible to get better with playing the more advanced notes above high C

Zamorakwineful Hi - Check out my How To Play High Notes part 3 video, which does focus on these highest notes, and High Notes 101 - parts 2 & 3. These notes often feel challenging at first, but if you set aside time to play them, they start to feel more comfortable. Try those videos, and try the exercise listed. I think it will help.
