R34 Skyline GTR in 2024

  • If you're anything like me, you've been obsessing about the year 2024. Why 2024? It's when the 1999 Nissan Skyline GTR finally becomes 25 years old and can be brought into the states.
We all know why we became obsessed with that vehicle. I’m sure you’ve seen the same movie as I have. If you’re a car guy, your dream car becomes either the MKIV Supra or the R34 Skyline. There is no other option.
But there’s more to it now. Manufacturer’s have been producing less and less manual vehicles over the years. I’ve been contemplating riding the manual train for a few more years, but as vehicles become scarce, I think it makes more sense to buy a used vehicle, completely restore it, and drive it. It won’t be 100% like new, but it’ll be close.
And according to numerous reports, you can even buy the RB26DETT engine, brand new from Nissan’s Heritage Parts program. I’ve seen prices around $50,000. That means that you can buy a used GTR, replace the engine and transmission and drive it for another 20 years, with regular maintenance of course. I’ve always liked hearing the stories of people that had one vehicle their entire lives and passed it down to their children, not as a daily, but as a collectible.
Your kid can drive the same vehicle as their father did for most of their lives, and it’s no joke of a vehicle either. In the end, you’ll end up spending the same amount of money purchasing the 99 GTR in 2024 as buying a brand new Porsche 911, but if you have a specific taste, why not buy it? Of course I’m talking about extreme makeovers, but you’ll be able to buy it for probably somewhere around $50-$60k when they start making their way over here. I’m sure that the first year the prices are going to be going through the roof, but it’ll stabilize, or you can just go through the process of importing it yourself in order to save $30-$40 thousand dollars.
And then just think, you can have a twin-turbo inline-six RB26 with a really good AWD system, whizzing through the streets, with enough space in the back to drive your family around with you. You can safely get 600+ hp with a few basic mods. And then you’re really cooking.
The R34 lacks a lot of modern day features that cause the vehicle to break track records, such as a dual clutch automatic gearbox, but isn’t that what we want? If the car is going to be making that many decisions for me, it might as well drive me around fully. Otherwise, I want to feel connected to it; to learn its quirks. To know how hard I can push it and to synchronize my upper and lower body to do so.

50-60K?! you're being way too generous with that figure lol. Base model GTR's are going for 70-80K right now and expect that number to double at the very least once they become US legal

Yea I’ve seen those prices...60-90k. 2024 I agree, they’re going to be ridiculous. I’m just hoping a few years down the road that the prices will drop to the 50-60k range. Wishful thinking I know

@@CarModGuy lol. yes that is wishful thinking. I am an American that lives in Germany, I just so happen to own a 33 and 34 GTR. today the base GTR will cost you around 80kUSD in good shape with no rust. Now jump ahead to 2024. They only 11559 were ever made. My 1999 base model is Bayside blue - 1 of 606. If It doesn't sell for more than 100k USD then my girls get it in 2035 when they can drive.

You can’t buy an r34 GTR anywhere worldwide for less than $100k USD now and it’s currently only 2021 as of this writing. The cheapest ones are likely going to be ~$175k by the time they are US legal in 2024.

I’ve driven a couple. My cousin actually had one up until not too long ago. Massive turbo and ended up cracking the block.

Nice. I traded my WRX for the STi. Both great cars. Very unique driving experience.
