I find it curious that there seems to be a large percentage of people that feel Vivian would not have wanted her work to be revealed. I realize that some of the people that "knew" her felt that she was such a private person she would never want her work shown. But who is to say that Vivian herself did not want to be examined in her privacy by those that she was surrounded by, but wished with all her heart that her photographic work would be treasured? In her correspondence to the photo shop in France she declares that she had photos that she knew were good, and she wanted to do business with them even though it was across an ocean and she, a demanding client. To me, that she spoke this way about her work and her being demanding speaks volumes about roadblocks she may have run into in processing her work in the states, otherwise why would she have felt the need to go overseas? What I find inexplicable is that she was a nanny that spent thousands and thousands of dollars on film and developing over her life, getting her work printed would have been a very expensive proposition. Could she have been unable financially to have it done? Who is to say that Vivian may not have felt hemmed in by her gender, her demands for her work, her financial situation as well as by her quirky nature; BUT desired acceptance for what she knew was a lifetime of great photography. I could be wrong and be way off the mark, but as the son of a highly eccentric mother, I believe I am fairly close to the mark.

She was trying very hard to make good art, and often succeeding. And she went to great lengths to preserve it for as long as she could. But she needed an agent, a business manager and/or a coach. She needed connections to the art market, galleries, etc. She needed to be part of a social network (in real life, not the Internet). Some of the photographers who succeeded were really good at networking and leveraging their connections.

22:58 One adjective to describe her is curious, as in very curious about the world, curious about how people and things look. When she could afford it, she paid for a big trip to see the world. When she couldn't afford it, she was still deeply curious about the world near her. Her pictures are definitely made, not taken. They are keenly observed and well composed, not casual. They appear to be a deliberate life-long art project, the result of passion and dedication, and a good deal of her resources.

The one word to describe Vivian for me was that she was "BOLD".
Like Henri Cartier-Bresson, he stated many times that he was an "Anarchist".
I believe this meant that Rules Were Meant to be Broken. So if a church priest told you that you couldn't take pictures in the church during the wedding, a "BOLD" photographer thought; "Hey, this is a special moment in the life of this couple, and darn-it, I'm going to cover it !"
I believe that this is the case when you hear that a photographer like HCB or Vivian fired off ONE photo, then they skipped away from the scene. They truly believed that the "Eyes couldn't Trespass", but just in case, I'm not going to wait around for a possible conflict...

this is bullshit there putting words in vivian maier month unless she told them what she was thinking or wrote it down there putting words in her mouth and meaning to her art that might not have anything to with the art but she not here to talk for her self this just another case of people making money off someones art so they make up this story and the meaning behind her work when in truth vivian maier was the only person who know about her art

I put a comment in here and got deleted and it wasn’t offense? My option that Vivian Maier was autistic and for some reason it wasn’t liked ?

Seriously flawed panel. Poorly framed like the interviewer who asks “what are your favorite colors - red, white or blue?” Totally inappropriate.
