  • Moab Rim claimed a victim as we broke a rear pinion gear going through the trail. Fortunately, we were able to finish the trail and get home safely.

    Nice! Moab rim is a tough trail. Glad your breakage didn't hinder you making it back down.

    Moab Trail was fun at EJS 2022. I didn't know until the next day that two people died on that trail. I needed a winch on Devil's Crack. Guess that's why they say it's between 7-8. :) Awesome video, keep 'em coming!

    Awesome video. I was at the campground just past the trailhead a couple weeks ago and watched some rented side by sides get stuck trying to get down in the dark. They spent 4 hours coming down that last part of the trail. I rode it on my dirt bike and it is gnarly. So many ledges.

    How were you able to continue with a grenaded rear end? That’s crazy.

      We not only finished the trail, but we drove back to Colorado…towing our trailer. The next day I heard a weird sound from the diff, drained the oil, and found metal chunks

      @@TrailTraveler you were very lucky! Could have been so much worse. Stock axles and 38’s are really pushing it. Time for some 60’s or tons!

      @@mikesters3532 Turned out we actually broke the pinion on the rear and the ring gear on the front. We changed the gearing from 5:38 to 5:13 on both. This will provide stronger gears.

    Unbelievable it's even legal to attempt this in your vehicle.

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler  Рік тому

      When slowing down, you could hear a clicking sound and a noticeable feeling. We pulled the drain plug on the differential housing and chunks of metal came out.

      Not sure how you would make it over some of the ledges, but there "might" be lines you could take. If you can make it 1/2 mile in, you can do the rest of it

    Did you find out anything about the Pinion? Weak point? I know you mentioned what caused it, but any further investigation and synopsis? Yukons right?

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler  Рік тому +1

      I was bouncing the tires and when they grabbed traction, something had to give. Having 38" Nittos didn't help as they are pretty heavy. Total driver error. Yes, they are Yukons, but it wasn't a weak point, it was bad driving.

      @@TrailTraveler I don't think that this was the result of any significant driver error. I think it was the result a combination of big tiers on a very small pinion. It was bound to happen.

    • @TrailTraveler
      @TrailTraveler  4 місяці тому

      @@Marty1911 if you watch carefully, you will see the mistake I made. I let the tires start spinning and then they grabbed traction. The gears were the weak link.

      @@TrailTraveler I'm not saying that you hit it perfectly, but who ever does hit everything 100% finesse? Those 38's on a JL axle don't leave much margin for error.
