I don’t know why people think that Berkeley was ever an open minded place. I’ve lived in the area my entire life, grew up just a few miles from Berkeley, and it’s always had a monoculture. Sure, they’re “open” - open to Buddhists, Muslims, Hare Krishnas (oh boy did we have Hare Krishnas all over the place.) But as a big Catholic family, we felt that we mostly had to hide in our own house, or at the private Catholic school we were enrolled in. Even in the early 70s-80s. And it got worse when the punk scene began and these little gutter punk kids with Mohawks started hanging out on Telegraph harassing everyone they thought was a “normie,” yelling hateful things and screaming at you for existing. You were never cool enough or leftist enough. They’d scream “FASCIST!” at you for coming out of record store with a bag, for driving, for looking like a clean cut kid. I grew up in the area, so I knew it was never some idealistic utopia of freethinkers. It was always judgmental sanctimonious holier than thou types. And it’s only gotten worse.

This is stunning. I attended a conservative public university in the South during the Reagan era. I was a liberal from the Northeast. I recall going to listen to Jerry Falwell, G. Gordon Liddy, George McGovern, Somosistas, Sadinistas, Christian evangelists, Tibetan Buddhists, Atheists, feminists, pro-choicers, pro-lifers, gun nuts, gun grabbers, etc., etc., etc. It was understood that the right of people to espouse views that one found offensive was essential.
I hope my kids go to University but a university to learn how to achieve what they want to do not how they're supposed to think. Conformity is anathema to learning

I’d love to know the origins of the anti free speech movement. I do know that when I was a college student at SFSU in the 90s it was an INTENSELY politically left atmosphere, and EXTREMELY (what we called back then) “PC,” but only if you were in certain liberal arts programs and humanities departments. I happened to be in the fine arts department, so was subject to that. But that is when a distinct shift from being able to engage in free flowing ideas to instead having to walk on eggshells for fear of offending certain overly sensitive people began. At that time it was strictly an academia issue, though, and mainly only at the most left leaning colleges (SFSU being one of the most left leaning places on earth at the time,) and in certain departments. Once I left campus it wasn’t an issue at all. And, in fact, being in the workforce was a culture shock as I had to unlearn all of that and realize that nobody cared about any of that. I sure was sad to see all of this stuff suddenly come back full force all at once in 2016 in every aspect of our culture, not just the most left leaning college campuses But I gotta tell ya, I blame Judith Butler, Foucault, and the other postmodern philosophers.

I was thinking about the study that was done where they gave people large doses of LSD and it messed them up. I know that’s a large dose of chemicals being put in the body, but would having the first generation exposed to the internet their whole life cause their brain to develop differently. I’m 31 and was a teen when the internet expanded rapidly, and can feel/recognize signs of addiction in myself like a chemical dependency, and only because I have “lived life” knowing the internet isn’t necessary, am I able to diagnose the possible underlying problem. As a social habit observer(people watching) I have wondered how this generation after mine will turn out, having access to infinite knowledge at their fingertips. How is the internet generation going be able to cope with life when that constant dopamine drip isn’t active?
Go to Hillsdale College and ask them questions about voting rights, gerrymandering, or other topics that these students might find challenging. I find it fascinating that you always go to liberal/mainstream colleges to challenge them or ask them to think through their opinions, but you never go to conservative colleges.
Felt the same way in college here in Norway during "International week", the year was 2016 i think. All the students pursuing high status jobs were very self righteous and Left leaning. (I was conservative at the time, i was 22 years old) And we had the same setup in a cramped classroom with "walk here if you agree or disagree" etc. I took an honest stance with some other guy, and people (that didn't even know me) , were soooooOOO disappointed. Some random black guy crossing his arms said to me "Hey [name], i'm very disappointed in you". Like dude, i've never spoken to you before like who the hell are you?. haha
Berkeley is where the campus free speech / anti-war movement started in the 1960s. But those students, today have become the very same thing they rightfully fought against 50 years earlier. Now that they can express themselves and are in positions of power, the other side has to be silenced.
Asking questions and using reason & logic is the way to arrive at Truth whether you're an atheist or a Christian, a democrat or Republican. These are inherent truths in the search for truth. Where do you suppose those truths come from though? Do they arise from naturalistic material determinism? And if so, how? And why can't one world view be absolutely true and the others somewhat true but not about true? Atheism is a valid belief system but is it an true? Why do you think that most universities came from Christianity?
